We now have the research to show how much Bill Finger contributed to making the 'Batman' we are familiar with. When Bob Kane proposed the character, it was... different. Bob and Bill also stole the fist Batman story from 'The Shadow' (the radio serial was one of my dad's favorites, r. i. p.). Bill Finger never got the respect he deserved, neither did Jerry Robinson (co-creator of Robin and The Joker), or early "ghostartists" like George Roussos, Dick Sprang, et al. Bob Kane liked the spotlight, but was totally unwilling to share the credit with his "staff" that did the majority of the work making 'Batman' world famous. There is an excellent documentary about Finger's work on Batman, and a few good books that look at all the people that helped make 'Batman' so popular (Batman and "Bat family" books made up 70 % of DC's top 10 sellers a year ago, over 60 % of all their overall top sellers as well).
@smokydogy ,"the black son of Nick Fury" storyline was thought up before the movies. That creative team wanted to do something different with S. H. I. E. L. Back in the 1970s, I mail ordered some comics from Bill Finger; they were probably reference issues or extras copies he got while working. I'm glad that I was able to help get some money to him, if only a few bucks. I wish I had kept my cancelled purchase check with his signature on it. I never thought about such things back then when I was an early teenager.

It’s not just Bill Finger, of course - Dick Sprang, Jerry Robinson, Sheldon Moldoff, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, all those guys got screwed by Kane one way or the other - but while most of those guys thankfully lived long enough to be recognized for their work, Finger, the co-creator of Batman, died in obscurity without ever getting to claim his creation. Even today, you could read Batman comics for years and never see his name. To be fair to everyone involved, I want to stress that this is in no way the fault of DC Comics. I’m pretty sure that everyone working over there would be more than happy to give Finger the credit he deserves, but thanks to Kane’s contract that specified that he would be credited as the sole creator of Batman until the end of time, they can’t. And the main reason for that, judging by reports from most of the people concerned, is that Finger was a great writer but an awful businessman, and Kane was a moderately talented artist who happened to be an evil narrsistic hack.
As the story goes, Siegel & Shuster wanted to get the rights to superman back from DC, and asked Kane for help. He declined. He did however tell the people in charge of DC about S & S's plan, and even got to negotiate a high pay grade for himself while he was at it.

Everyone wants a slice of Kane after hearing Fingers story, funny this was never talked about back in the day when something could have been done. Steranko is just riding the wave here
Hugh Hefner and Adam West's Bruce Wayne wore an ascot. George Lucas gets a cut of all the Star Wars merchandise. Spider-man was a used name before Stan Lee took it and did his partners dirty.
Both Robert Kane (Robert Kahn) and Bill Finger (Milton William Finger) are Jewish. Kane (Kahn) being Eastern European Jew bloodline and Finger being Austrian-Jewish bloodline.
What I would of Gave to Slap Bob Kane after finding out what he did to Bill finger and the blokes that built the Charcter Bob claimed to create while screwing everyone over
What Kane did was draw a picture that looked like a sketch of a man in a bat suit or shape, and that's how he could claim he created Batman and get away with it for years. That's all he did really. But if that deal was in effect by 1966 well that may have made him comfortable.
He died and now everyone discredits him sad and fake just like media. He was friends with stan lee they would go eat dinner together. Stan was been here since before dc was even called DC. People say the same about Stan lee which is crazy because he never even intended or thought that his creations would be collectables or have alot of impact in our culture.
I am astounded DC is ok with Bob Kane, a narcissist, a wannabe, a fake and a selfish thief representing the backbone of who they are. Batman represents justice, while Kane is famous for deceit, theft, forgery, even murder, etc. DC supports super-villains, rather than true heroes, how sad and twisted...
Artist Bob Kane created Batman, and writer Bill Finger did not. Bill suggested a makeover to the character which worked, but that hardly made him an artist/creator overnight. Actually without Superman, there would have been no Batman, anyway. The company just wanted a followup to Superman, and Kane came up with it inside of one weekend. Yet even since then he's been treated like a villain because he didn't go into business as a one man "credit Bill" promoter, which is nonsense.
I'm sorrry but Steranko was DEAD WRONG to slap an old man, that is, IF this story is true! It sounds so much like a scene from GODFATHER PART 2 I don't find it coincidental. But even so, old guys used to do stuff like that in those days because it was an expression of admiration for youthful ambition, especially Jewish oldmen! But having said this, what's wrong with Kane's liking ascots and patent leather shoes? How about if I made fun of Jim's wacky hair style? Anyway, Bill Finger was NEVER Bob Kane's business partner and that was why he never got "credit". Like other former assistants who worked for artists or other writers, working for Kane got Finger training and skills he could take to DC or other publishers and from then on, the development of his career was his own responsibility, PERIOD!.
@@Connorgallus Yes, because we've been lied to by Kane AND by his detractors who distorted the facts! Kane came clean but his enemies kept lying even after many unbiased sources backed him up!
I can't blame him but BATMAN is more than just a VOICE! BOB KANE is the voice I remember! but I love THE BAT no matter who wrote are acted the great story/hero!!
The whole point of the Finger Kane story is that Finger was never given credit for his concepts, The suit ,rogues gallery, supporting characters and environment were all from Bill Finger .Kane was a technically uninspired artist with a unique style who did not state Bill Fingers major involvement while negotiating with the fledgling DC comics.
With Kane's penchant for hiring assistants, Steranko's lucky Bob wasn't angry enough or had the inclination to hire some thugs to kick HIS butt! Still, Mr.Kane had no right putting his hands on anybody because he didn't know how the person's going to take it, but everything else Steranko said was disrespectful and out of line! Actually Jim's "testimony" reminds me of what's wrong with the American Comics industry. The publisher, National (later DC ) shied away from licensing Batman products because Bob Kane would have gotten a piece of it but they licensed Superman to the hilt and didn't have to share anything with Siegel and Shuster...and this is applauded?! Bill Finger, who has been exposed as a shameless plagiarist, is a "hero" to too many people but Kane who ran his studio like a business is the "villain"?! With this kind of mindset, it's no wonder that American Comics creators have always struggled compared to their Japanese counterparts and American Comics in general just keep recycling the same stories over and over and over again! When they're not busy having their heroes make deals with the Devil!
Pulsar Stargrave "Nobody liked that guy?" I'm not surprised, why? Because he was SUCCESSFUL! The problem with that Bill Finger Sob Story Steranko is telling is that it doesn't hold up to the reality. Finger worked directly for Kane from 1938-1940 or '41 and he supposedly died broke in 1974. But what is left out was what happened in between?! His success on BATMAN gave Finger MANY opportunities! I mentioned his contributions to the original GREEN LANTERN but he also Co-Created WILDCAT and worked for other publishers besides DC, including Timely\Marvel (He Co-Created The All Winners Squad for them). And if that wasn't enough, he became a screenwriter for film and television! What Steranko also left out was that Finger had personal problems that sabotaged a lot of these opportunities which, unfortunately, is a common occurrence with some creative types but that's another subject in itself.
Pulsar Stargrave Bill Finger only straight lifted one story which was the first Batman story "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" which in Detective Comics #27 which was ripped from The Shadow. Finger confessed and took all responsibility for that plagiarism. He credits his sources and influences. However he defends that he wasn't aware that it was going to be published, he was under the impression the Bob just wanted a story to practice his art on. Kane claimed he wrote "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" by himself, and it was a wholly original story when evidence proves otherwise. www.dialbforblog.com/archives/391/
DoctorWeeTodd Where are Finger's direct quotes in admission to this? I'm NOT interested in second hand info because I've found that too often people like to speak "for" Bill when they are only using their own words. And BTW that's not the only time Finger engaged in plagiarism. The suggestions he made about parts of the costume were "inspired" by The Phantom and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he might have seen Spring Heeled Jack and forgotten about it or failed to mention it! Did you ever read the story in BATMAN #1--"Professor Strange And His Monsters"? Didn't the ending remind you of a certain movie? Oh, I suppose that was another "practice" story, huh? As for Kane, I'm not denying that he notoriously lied about having a studio and he wasn't the only cartoonist to do so. There are several reasons why but some have to do with ego while others just plain don't want their people to be stolen by other cartoonists and more importantly, today's assistant may become tomorrow's competition. Just look at American comics today, journeymen and women travel from one company to the next! As for "Dial B For Blog" for personal reasons, I'm just not interested in that site at all.
Pulsar Stargrave Taking inspirations and ideas is not the same as complete plagiarism which Kane did often and Finger admitted to in Case of the Chemical Syndicate. Bob Kane plagiarized his entire life and had to gall to call anyone who accused him as such liars. www.chud.com/community/t/96681/bob-kane-story
DoctorWeeTodd Kane swiped. And LOTS of artists and writers have swiped. Writers swiped ideas and plot devices, just look at how often Romeo and Juliet has been swiped. Yes, there is a difference between swiping and plagiarism and it is a very fine line that's best to be avoided. You can't copyright an idea because they are nebulous things. But you can copyright and trademark a finished product. So, YES I know the difference so I don't need a lecture. Now, Kane, like many other cartoonists, swiped poses and if he didn't know how to draw a gorilla he swiped from somebody who did. There are no excuses for that so why do you want to make excuses for Finger? It's this silly double standard that I find amusing. Finger didn't take "inspiration" from King Kong he STOLE from it! And the image of how Batman could look more impressive than Kane's original concept was from previous characters not his own ideas. This is why a guy like Finger or anybody like him needed to have story conferences with editors, to remind him that "...this sounds awful familiar!" What you and other Finger backers can't come to grips with is that he CHOSE to be a freelance writer and speaking from personal experience, knowing freelancers and having indulged in it a little, FREELANCING STINKS! Unless your work is mega popular like a Jack Davis, Norman Rockwell or a Frazetta, you might eat today, you may not tomorrow that's why when an offer for a steady job comes up, most freelancers jump on it and don't mess it up! Based on how Bill managed his own career, Kane was right not to make him a business partner and I respect his decision.
Bob Kane only came up with a loose idea and the name. Bill Finger is responsible for what everyone recognizes as Batman- the cowl, the cape, the back story, the detective work, the batcave/batmobile, many of the villains, etc. Kane took the idea as his own and pitched it to DC securing himself the deal and pushing Finger out of the picture. Legally Kane is credited as the creator along with Finger, but in reality Finger came up with most of it as he was the writer and creative force behind it. Finger died unknown and penniless while Kane reveled in the wealth and fame, do the math.
@@mck7646 Regardless. He was the initial creator. It was his idea. Was he a dick about it?? Hell Yeah but lots of artists and creators etc. Are like this. They get petty.
Nobody is saying that Kane didn’t come up with the idea of Batman and that he doesn’t deserve credit for doing so. People don’t like him because he refused to give all of the other people who worked on and contributed to Batman like Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, Dick Sprang and Sheldon Moldoff their well-deserved credit and lied by saying that he alone created Batman. Kane was the initial spark, but everything that we know and love about Batman including his costume, his true identity and his backstory was created by Bill Finger. He absolutely deserved at least partial credit for creating Batman, but he ended up dying penniless in obscurity at only age 59 while Kane took all the credit and got rich. Finger did not deserve what happened to him.

Wow I didn't know about that one but he had no right to do that to him but Jim did had a reputation of not being messed with I recall hearing or reading something years ago about an incident when he wanted to be paid for panels that had no words on them and I remember years ago the comic book was strange tales featuring Nick fury agent of shield I remember the book when it was out at the time it had no words it really expresses the artistic expression without words and art tells the story in the case of Nick and Val's romance now he went to this guy named sol brodanski I don't know if that's the way you pronounce it or spell it but anyway he want to be paid for those panels and sol wouldn't pay for it so he tried to throw him out the window now I do condemns some forms of violence only in self-defense but he did get paid for those panels now in the case of Bob Kane he really had no business doing what he did to him that was not right so sometimes you smack a person in the face you going you going to get it right back at you I never met Jim but I recall corresponding to the guy that he tried to throw out the window through a letter but that was when I was a teenager
Everyone wants a slice of Kane after hearing Fingers story, funny this was never talked about back in the day when something could have been done. Steranko is just riding the wave here
This shit happened all the time back in the day it was prsctically normal
Hugh Hefner and Adam West's Bruce Wayne wore an ascot. George Lucas gets a cut of all the Star Wars merchandise.
Spider-man was a used name before Stan Lee took it and did his partners dirty.
Bitch slapped him no less. Haha works every time.
Why?? It's insane!! Bob is the villain!! Bill finger is the true hero.
Probably the only person who smacked Bob Kane. Probably many wanted to.
Both Robert Kane (Robert Kahn) and Bill Finger (Milton William Finger) are Jewish. Kane (Kahn) being Eastern European Jew bloodline and Finger being Austrian-Jewish bloodline.
This old dude probably has more swagger and cool than 99% of the nerds there 😂
What I would of Gave to Slap Bob Kane after finding out what he did to Bill finger and the blokes that built the Charcter Bob claimed to create while screwing everyone over
What Kane did was draw a picture that looked like a sketch of a man in a bat suit or shape, and that's how he could claim he created Batman and get away with it for years. That's all he did really. But if that deal was in effect by 1966 well that may have made him comfortable.
More like he traced another artist’s drawing
Bill Finger is the real hero
He died and now everyone discredits him sad and fake just like media. He was friends with stan lee they would go eat dinner together. Stan was been here since before dc was even called DC. People say the same about Stan lee which is crazy because he never even intended or thought that his creations would be collectables or have alot of impact in our culture.
Going off what happened at bobs funeral i doubt he had much respect for him near the end. Hard to say
@@MILDMONSTER1234 he did there is video of him talking about bob after his death people just think they kno but dont kno shit
I love Steranko's illustrations, but he's more than a little full of himself. I would have liked to have heard Bob's version of the story.
The guy who is by all accounts a dishonest schmuck?
...why?
Bob Kane was the Donald Trump of comics!
Give the Trump shit a break. Dumbass
Man,that's the Harshest comment I've read on here.
Orange man bad.. fs give it a rest. Can you keep it up for another 4 years?
Donald Trump is a badass. Bob Kane is a schmuck.
Orange messiah dick is a hell off a drug and a lot of cocksuckers here in the comments.
So Bob Kane Jewed everybody over, basically ?
No, he basically screwed everyone over and ripped them off.
Nobody mess with Baby Jim !
That's a hefty bit of denial on your part.
Are you really going to defend Kane for fucking over and taking credit for other peoples work for 75 years?
@@Connorgallus Yes, because we've been lied to by Kane AND by his detractors who distorted the facts! Kane came clean but his enemies kept lying even after many unbiased sources backed him up!
@@pulsarstargrave256 yeah you definitely sound an in denial loon.
@@alexjacoli9380 uninspired artist... tracer of panels by Foster etc
There is nothing wrong with opening yourself to the truth, no matter how painful it can be.
The problem with that Bill Finger Sob Story Steranko is telling
is that it doesn't hold up to the reality.
This is why a guy like Finger or anybody like him needed to have story conferences with editors, to remind him that "...this sounds awful familiar!"
What you and other Finger backers can't come to grips with is that he CHOSE to be a freelance writer and speaking from personal experience, knowing freelancers and having indulged in it a little, FREELANCING STINKS!
Bob Kane is still the creator of Batman. Everybody is trying to undermine him because they don't like him as a person but Batman was HIS idea. The end
Yeah but Bill Finger designed Batman he came up with backstories. As well as other characters.
