    By far the best recording ever. Nothing comes close to the vocalists involved, guided by Solti’s inspired swift tempi with unique orchestral playing, showcased by genius producer Culshaw.

      I completely disagree with all respect to Levine who had been an amazing conductor (heard him often live!).
      Vocalists as well as the clarity and swift tempi of Solti’s ring stand the test of time over all others with flying colors!
      Blessed to have a producer with the infallible ear of John Calshaw, I wonder if we will see a better Ring than Solti’s during 21 century (?)

      The singers are in pic form and deliver masterclass of singing every second of it! Diction, Volume, Nuances…

    From which scene is the gorgeous orchestral music that begins at 39:00?

      That's the Immolation Scene which concludes Götterdämmerung and, therefore, the entire Ring.

      @@classicsdirect Thank you for answering! There is something very special
      indeed in the way the violins play the beautiful theme towards the end! It is
      so expressive, so perfectly realized!

    Solti's "Die Walküre" recording is the weakest of his otherwise supreme Ring Cycle - Hans Hotter as Wotan is past his prime and sounds muffled. Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic perform wonderfully, except for the opera's final moments in the "Magic Fire" music - the various sections of the orchestra start going out of sync. The best Walküre for me is the Leinsdorf recording with George London as Wotan and Birgit Nilsson as Brunhilda - both were in the prime of their careers and were in spectacular voice on the recording dates. London really does sound like a God, while Nilsson gives a much better performance than what is heard on the Solti recording. The Leinsdorf recording also sounds better - there is a very spacious and wide stereophonic production that makes everything sound all the more grand.

    why do the Brits mispronounce Gotterdammerung as Gert it's like the word otter with a G in front German for god is gott. The Solti Ring is monumental sure but overrated. For me the BEST Ring recording of the all comes from James Levine and the Met except for his pitifully slow as molasses end of Act three of Siegfried. And his ending of Gotterdammerung moves me to tears when I hear it weekly. He holds the final note for a long time just like Solti did here. But the now late James Levine's RING is pristine.

      I think you have to take into account the monumental achievement in its time when recorded.

      God= Gott, gods= Götter.
      Twilight of the Gods (plural!) = Götterdämmerung
      The umlaut above the (ö) makes it an “er” sound. Also, this is an Australian accent, not British! :)
