40 years ago I first saw the Ring on TV, the Patrice Chereux production conducted by Boulez. I was hooked immediately and was always frustrated not to have more of a tour around the pit, backstage and auditorium, the mechanics of which were as fascinating as the music-drama. And next year, finally, I have tickets to see the Ring in Bayreuth. Bucket list ticked off. 😀

Thanks for this excellent presentation. Just one small comment: the orchestral pit does have an air conditioning since a couple of years ago. But for auditors it’s still the same ordeal when it’s hot outside.

Wagner was the only major European composer who was highly influenced by Indian philosophy like most German intellectuals of !9th century at the time. He has interpreted in his works such as Lohengrin, Tristan, Parsifal and his famous opera Ring of the Nibelungs besides he has also written extensively in his prose works about India from where European civilization originates. Wagner’s brother in law Herman Brockhaus was a well known professor of Sanskrit at Leipzig University from whom Wagner gained lot of knowledge on Indian philosophy. Wagner besides being a composer, he was a polymath. Finally I would like to add that Wagner's writing Total Work of Art was inspired by NATYASHASTRA 2nd century BCE is a Sanskrit treatise on Art, Architecture, Dance, Drama and Music. Finally Wagner's genius will never be surpassed his name will remain paramount on the cultural map of the world for a long time to come until someone of his caliber comes along to change it which in my opinion is very doubtful.
There is no such thing as Aryan civilization the word Aryan in Vedic term means a person belonging to Noble class which has been misinterpreted by the West. Wagner and Notable German Indologists of 19th century have written about this.

I was born 15 years too late. I always wanted to go experience Wagner in Bayreuth when I was a child in the 80's. But now that you don't have to get in line for tickets for years, I have absolutely no intention of going. The productions are just rubbish compared to the times when I was younger.

The 3rd of the great B, Brahams was not lover of Wagner's music. He harkened back to Mozart and Scarlatti and preferred his orchestra 50 instruments, natural horns and trumpets. Listen to a recording of his symphonies played as he wanted instead of the string dirge fest wangerianism did to them.
He was certainly a genius, but his political views were poisonous. I have only fully grasped that Wagner was a (superior) precursor to the Nazis after reading Cosima Wagner's diaries. The philosophy behind the vulgar Nazi movement and the more sophisticated Wagner was pretty much identical. Despite all this I can not regret Wagner existed, as his work is far too magnificent.

🎹 I attended performances at Bayreuth in 1998 and 1999. I have a wonderful picture of me with Wolfgang Wagner, Wagner's grandson.
