I don't know if you get notifications for new comments on old videos. But I very much appreciate your videos, I've watched a few now and I'm going to subscribe. Much appreciated truly. You explain things very simply and show me every step of the way.
Bought one of the TaoTronics A/Cs and liked it so much as to order a second one. An added bonus is that it's not so heavy it can't be handled by one person.
We were bound really bad with medical bills for my wife, but as I clear them some more I plan to get the rest of mine I need. It's easier to buy them instead of more solar, wind, batteries and controllers to handle the old style AC units.
Hey man, i don't intend on making my own switch, i just got a wind turbine and it came with a Break Switch included and the mppt too, and the break switch was confusing me because, how does it work? and your explanation/demonstration made it very clear and easy to understant, so thank you for the information! i was expecting a break to be something physical that locks the fan but the short circuit locks the motor in place and makes a lot of sense!
your not getting too old youve got some miles in ya yet, those little turbines amaze me for such low rpms. one guy who easily has more brains than me which isnt hard reckons a stator will heat up and even burn if the blades are huge enough and the wind strong enough when doing a dump/brake to wire wound resistors no battery hook up, i dont know how true that is but i guess some temp sensors on the windings would soon teach me .
Great video, thanks lots. I have a rookie question, though. What actually happens with solar / wind power, when the batteries are fully charged? Is there danger of overcharging the batteries or is that electricity "magically" going to waste? Sorry, if that is a dumb question. I just simply understand far too little about the topic.
With solar the controller will simply stop charging the battery. With wind once you reach a certain voltage you switch to a dump load like a heating element or a brake like the switch where the wires are simply shorted until the voltage of the battery drops back down to less than fully charged.
The wise decision in that is to use an alternative collection instead of just burning off the energy. One of the ways that I've solved it is to use a few hundred amp hours of lithium and then return that charge to my lead acid in the middle of the night. Recent videos describe that on my channel.
Resistors are for dump loading so that you can manage your battery voltage and prevent the turbine from overcharging, a break is so that you can park the turbine in an off position to keep it from being damaged and bad weather or service the turbine. The guy in Missouri uses a cheap plated contact toggle switch and they tend to burn up and let loose of your turbine at the wrong time.
I seen a few of your videos about a year ago you said something about insted of using holm resitors to turn the over flow power into heated air you was going to use a water heating elament. Did you ever make that video? If so i would like to see how it turned out im doing something like that myself. As im also using this breaking system you showed in this video i just have to water proof the switch as it will be outside in the elaments.
You can do this with excess wind and full loaded solar during the day as well using the right controllers. I have a 8 gallon Vevor water heater sitting waiting on my time to do it to make a pre main tank heater system. I just have had a rough year in health and cash flow.
Have you ever tried a 3ph contactor like the ones AC units have, with a 12vdc coil , then use it for the brake? You could probably find some way to automate the coil using a programmed VSR when your batteries are full or wind is too fast.
Yes, they tend to get cycled far too much and a 12 volt coil is rare to find. The majority are 24 volt. A 3 phase SSR works much better. It has a trigger voltage of 5 to 32 vdc.
Ha John.. I have been running BC500 for 4 years and just recently last 6 months it doesn't seem to be putting out power like it used to are there any checks I can do to see what the problem might be.. it's on a tilt up tower and really don't want to bring it down if I don't have to
After that long, I'd check for corrosion on the wire connectors from the turbine down. Another possibility is carbon dust build up on slip rings. Either way, it's like a car and does need attention sometimes. Be sure to recheck all fasteners, use water pump rtv on gaskets when reassembly. J
Not Yet, I have shown over the years the methods, but due to a little out of the way cost I have not yet funded a complete one in my new system. In Idaho I had it but did not make much on it but now with Lithium getting actually affordable it may be a a needed video. A Battery slave system is using a few batteries as incoming wind power diffusers and not your main bank so you can best moderate the effect in a tuned way. It extends the entire battery banks lifespan. With LiFePO4 you can use lead acid slaves in a 24 volt arrangement to pass through charge a banks of 12 volt LiFePO4 via cheap PWM solar controllers. I will have to make a example of it soon.
I have a question for the teacher, my "advisor". When it comes to braking options are resistave dump loads the best option? I would never challenge your guidance or wisdom; I watched your video (4 yrs old) where you showed use of a 30 amp mechanical contacter switch which tied the 3 AC leads from the stator.
