- King Charles III has delivered the King's Speech at the State Opening of Parliament, in London.
In a speech written by the newly-elected Labour government, the King announced draft laws including plans on nationalising the railways, renewable energy, housing and planning.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the plans will "take the brakes off Britain”.

This has been the case in Britain for the last three centuries or so incase you haven't been paying attention
UK is a democracy and this is the tradition. What's your problem? The King is the Head of state above the party politics, as so many European presidents who have just a ceremonial status. However, they all like the King, have an important job in taking care of continuity, bringing experience and stepping in when some high-level actor with no political ambitions but just the best of the nation in mind, is needed.
As so many former PMs have said, that is extremely valuable when the PMs face problematic situations. No doubt, a lot of experience was transferred by the late Queen to the King and the same is happening from Charles III to the current Prince of Wales. No party political barriers here, but pure continuity.

I don't know why people are making negative statements about the King. He is simply reporting what the new Labour Government have said they plan to do.
I didn't vote Labour, but I think for the most part their goals are noble - whether they are achievable or not within 5 years is another question.
I do have strong reservations about their climate change ambitions, it's effectiveness in real terms and it's cost to the people of the UK, their ambition to bring Britain back into the European Union, and also their plans to legislate against conversion therapy.

Legally, yes, it is his government and appointed by his royal authority but on our behalf. The king acts constitutionally as the servant of the people to appoint the Prime Minister based on the election outcome (i.e. whoever can command a majority in the House of Commons), to appoint other government ministers on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and to receive any subsequent resignations of ministers. He also has the constitutional power to open and dissolve each session of Parliament. Parliament meets only by royal authority. In extremis, the king has the power of last resort to dismiss the government or to dissolve Parliament and call fresh elections (e.g. if the government goes rogue or becomes incapable of governing or to resolve a constitutional deadlock). He has these residual powers of last resort to check the government, the House of Commons or the House of Lords if necessary in the constitutional (not political) interests of the people. There are other powers vested in Parliament to keep the monarch in check (e.g. the king cannot enter the House of Commons to interfere in its deliberations). Our constitution involves a delicate system of checks and balances so that neither the King, the government, the House of Commons nor the House of Lords can overstep their constitutional authority.
