Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Tim Burton's reboot of 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which had a mixed reception on release. Looking back at it now, was it as good as critics say? Or was it just another weird Johnny Depp movie?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 2005
Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Deep Roy), Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

Fun fact: The toothpaste company Charlie's dad works for is called Smylex, which is the same company that made the Joker's laughing gas in the 1989 Batman movie (also directed by Tim Burton).

I was disturbed by that scene and the scene where his dad burns all his Halloween candy. I've avoided this movie like the plague for over a decade because of it.
Same, and it sucked because I LOVED the rest of the movie, but I'd always close my eyes or leave the room until I heard the sound of Wonka applauding
The worst part was the melting eyes and the sound getting deeper.
Really? I always thought it was hilarious as a kid

It's probably the closer movie to the original book, of the two movies.
The original story is also an allegory for the Garden of Eden, people in the town used to live in a veritable paradise, until someone took knowledge out of the factory, at which point, Willy kicked the humans out and started using an unexplained work force to do everything with methods no one can understand.
Also also: If Charlie hadn't bought that last chocolate bar, someone else in town would have, it just might have taken longer since everyone thought the last ticket was already found.
Bruh I never knew it was something about Garden of Eden.
If that's really what the original is meant to represent then Roald Dahl was thinking weird shit. I like the Wonka version more lol

It's not some reason lol, the new ones cold and terrifying as shit. Charlie lives in a gulag, nothing has color most of the time, johnny Depp has negative charisma as Wonka, there's so much wrong with this lol.
It's meant to be timeless, and also placeless... Roald Dahl wrote his books to be more like... I'm forgetting the phrase... morality stories?
Now that I look back at this movie I'm terrified and this should be on the horror section in Netflix

Of course the new one is scarier than the old one because it's closer to the book version!!! That's why the first Willy Wonka movie that came out was so far from the book they didn't want to scare the people who were watching it that wasn't their point! Charlie and the chocolate factory is a good movie period Point blank!

"We're sending Charlie to space!" Surprisingly, that's roughly the plot of the follow up book, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
