  • I tried out my new coin microscope and got an up close look at Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar mint marks. I also used it to investigate some really cool chop marks on some 8 Reales coins. These Spanish coins minted in Mexico were the world's currency for many many years. These particular coins with cop marks have obviously been to "The Far East," but can anyone help me decipher the origin of any of them? I hope you enjoy this video that not only will save my eyes, but make my videos much more interesting as I can see details so much better! As always, thanks for watching!

Those old 8R are so cool. Many of you viewers may not know that your iPhone has a magnifier app. It usually found in the utilities or extras but once you find it, hold down on it and you can move it to your home app screen. I’ve played with it quite a bit and it’s a pretty good app.

That is one sweet scope.Chop marks really started in the 17 hundreds in east Asia.If I remember right each merchant had their own stamp, think the larger trading companies used them

I'm not a big fan of the light but when you zoom in more it's not bad. Sweet 8R. I'd love to get my hands on the 1783.

I'm very lucky that I get to use a good inspection Microscope at work. I can even
measure the size of the fonts with it.
It cost about £6000 so it has a few Engineering tricks on it, as I use it for checking
the parts we make, even checking the angels on screw threads.
But I do use it for coins as well.

    Looks pretty good, T.
I'm still on the lookout for the 'right' 8 Reales coin to come on my radar, and it would go better with my channel name (context) if it had 'chop marks'. I will probably get a slabbed example and I know it will cost me.
I have a Canon 7D SLR 18 MP and the awesome Canon EF 100mm Macro lens for photographing my coins. It's an old lens, now, but has a new use; coins.

i knew someone who had a "pieces of eight" coin that had chop marks. since I was taking japanese at the time. I saw that there were kanji stamped
into the coin. I think one of your coins has a kanji on it as well in the upper left, right around the 10:44 mark in the video.
I could be wrong, but it looks familiar.
