- This is a video I recorded back on the first day of school, August 17th.
The school bus radio frequency was a beehive of activity, as bus drivers dealt with missing students, broken buses, not knowing directions, and other problems faced on the first day of school. Many of the drivers were walking over each other, which just means transmitting while someone else already is. It creates an incredibly annoying sound when two radios are feeding into the repeater at the same time. Anyway, the dispatchers, as well as the shop, did a great job keeping everything in order.
For the afternoon, I had my power supply and antenna running into the back of the TK-8180. This was the first time I recorded school bus chatter on this unit.
At the time, I had the FleetSync ID on this unit set to 1104456, which is the ID a good majority of the bus radios have. It causes the radio to go into selective call alert when the matching ID is received from another radio. I've since given this radio, along with my NX-800 units, its own ID.
Most of the bus radios you hear are Kenwood NX-800 units, with several TK-8150 and TK-8180 units mixed in.
One of the dispatchers heard in this video, Sarah, left the company a few weeks ago. Stephanie and Sherita are currently the only two dispatchers.

Wow, the radio protocol with this group is terrible. I do not understand why it is so hard for people to listen before transmitting. Radio training should be a mandatory part of employee onboarding.

How did you actually become a school bus driver? I ask because I’ve always had an interest in school buses since I’ve been a kid. I’ve thought about one day maybe becoming a school bus driver tbh.
I know this is a very late reply, but usually you can go up to your counties transport department and ask them if there are any jobs available as a bus driver
you have to have a CDL with p/s endorsements and/or Air/hydraic brake endorsements as wel as background checks DOT pyiscal and other training
simple call your school bus company and ask. if there hiring

Would you be able to listen to fire departments on these ? I'm looking to get a scanner and I'm curious if these radios can do it
Depends on the frequency, can only program the receiving frequency not transmit to talk to FD unless you’re an officer of that department
then go buy a scanner for that that is a business band radio

I have a tk5210 vhf for a base station, I honestly wouldn't mind picking up an 8180 or something for uhf analog stuff, I'm also kind of leaning towards something UHF DMR as well with so many buisnesses going digital, as well as some of the ham stuff.

One day in the winter, my bus went into the ditch cuz my Road was completely iced over n the CB's r Motorola's n they sounded like the Chicago police radio Transmissions when there were people talking over each other. Sounded pretty awesome.
