- Hallelujah sung by Kaylee Rogers and Killard House School Choir in 2016. Copyright 2016 Kaylee Rogers/Killard House School Kaylee, a student at Killard House Special School in Northern Ireland, who suffers from autism and ADHD; stunned the online world with a choir rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.
Colin Millar, the school’s principal, told BBC News that Kaylee is often shy - but not when she sings.
“All my kids have talents, as well as barriers, and this is hers.”
“She’d be a very quiet little girl, but when she sings, she just opens up,” he said.
Kaylee started attending Killard House a few years ago, in order to help her address learning delays. She’s overcome some incredible challenges to share that voice with the world and singing has helped her build up her confidence
“For a child who came in and wouldn’t really talk, wouldn’t really read out in class, to stand and perform in front of an audience is amazing. It takes a lot of effort on Kaylee’s part,” Millar said.
“Hallelujah”, written by Leonard Cohen over the course of five years, was recorded by dozens of famous artists. But, Cohen passed away in November 2016, just weeks before Kaylee Rogers’ rendition of his most famous song was released. Somehow, we’re sure that Cohen would approve of this stunning remake.

What I want to know is WHO are the people that disliked this? What is wrong with people! Beautiful, so needed right now!
I'm sure those who appreciate the original find something lacking when the lyrics are butchered, no matter how gifted the artist.
I, for one, cannot get the original lyrics and force of the song out of my head....a sadomasochistic version of David’s sin with Bathsheba. (She tied you to the kitchen chair) And drags from his lips a “hallelujah” from the sexual pleasure of it. Hallelujah means. “Praise the Lord.” Thus David, according to Coen, is not only beginning an unseemly affair, but is also mocking God while doing it. Illicit sex is not an act of worship. She got pregnant, and to hide what he did, David killed her husband. This was a horrible thing he did and would later be personally tortured by the thought of it...he would repent, but would feel awful about it for a long time. The original song glorifies his shame. People like to mindlessly sing Hallelujah without any knowledge of the context. The melody and tune are indeed good, the girl who sings it is sweet, but it’s hard to lift the melody away from the lyrics for many devout Christians.

I just discovered this beautiful young lady's voice and adaptation of Leonard Cohen's song from one one of those advertisements embedded in otherwise popular and reliable websites. I find her presentation moving.
But let's be clear, this song bears little resemblance to the original lyrics of the creator, and I wonder why her handlers felt the need to change the first verse lyrics so dramatically. As a descendant of the House of David, Jesus would be just as pleased as Saul by David's "secret chord."
As a father with an autistic daughter I just want to thank you for doing what you do your an inspiration to my daughter and it means the world to me that she has such a great example of over coming her fears and doing what she's passionate about.
As a 43-year old father of two little girls and the man who has to live everyday of his life with a learning disability called, "Nonverbal Learning Disorder", or "NVLD", thank you for your generous patience with your daughter. Everyone focuses on the CHILDREN with significant learning hurdles, but once you leave academia it's like, "Whelp! Not MY problem anymore! Good luck out there in life!", and you're not prepared at all for life in the real world. It's not like it goes away once you turn 18! NO! You're stuck with it for the rest of your life! I don't know if your daughter KNOVVS she's ASD or not, but NVLD'ers DO! We KNOW WHAT "NORMAL" IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE AND LIVE A VERY FRUSTRATING LIFE TRYING IN VAIN TO ACHIEVE IT! Having a Wife and two beautiful little girls and a house we were able to finance through my VA lone is about the only thing that makes me feel truly "normal". We ABSOLUTELY need to start young with intervention and preparing children with these challenges to grow into healthy adults who can handle themselves in the real world.
I watched a video documentary not long ago, and I'd seen it before, but I watch it again every now and again as a reminder about things and for perspective, but it's a short documentary/Public Service Announcement about women...GROWN WOMEN, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)and it's fascinating. God Bless you and your daughter! By the way, if she ever gets to feeling down about Autism, let her know that in my youth, there was a bombshell actress who had ASD; her name is Deryl Hannah!

I am a retired construction worker that was never allowed to show feeling even when breaking bones, this made me cry like a child.
Kaylee is 10 years old in this video, she has a better understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ than many grown-ups! What a beautiful little girl!

12/24/23 right about midnight. I’m listening to this for about the 50th time in the last two days. I just discovered it and I can’t stop playing it over and over again. Kaylee is just incredible as well as all the classmates. God has blessed each and everyone of you.

The school needs all the support and appreciation it can get. They not only came up with Christmas-themed lyrics but captured the real spirit of Christmas. The School not only encouraged Kaylee's unique talent but it included the entire chorus in an uplifting performance. I cannot imagine there was a dry eye in the audience. A story of hope. This is a beautiful song and I love the way this young girl really puts a lot of feeling in it. That is the only way that you can feel the annointing of the song because she feels it. The first time I heard this version of Hallelujah it stole my soul and a tear or two trickled down my cheek. Now when I listen to it I feel pure joy, not just because of the words to the song, but to listen to a little girl who has overcome so much along with her classmates. God's gift to us all!!

A very nice and touching rendition. Not only is the lead singer talented, but the camera work was amazing for a school production and the accompaniment and sound engineering as well. A really amazing production overall. When I first saw this I did not realize that anyone in it suffered from any disabilities, I only learned that by looking up the school. Anyone who participated in making this production should be very proud. A true credit to the Killard House School and all of the work that is done there. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the World.

I ran across this on TH-cam around Christmas 2018. I have watched and listened at least 100 times - and nary a single one goes by without my having tears in my eyes. What a tribute to such special people at Killard House! It isn't just about Kaylee, it's about the choir of those wonderful children behind her and the teachers and staff that made this happen! That said, Kaylee's voice is tremendous to me, for a 10 year-old with a troubled life. More than her voice is the passion with which she sings this song. Without that, it might just be "ordinary". Her obvious passion for the song and her lifting herself to heaven as she runs up the chords to Hallelujah, these are some of what makes me show this to everyone I know! At the time it's mid-April and I've been virtually locked in my home for a month or more. I've watched and listened at least 10 times just today and Hallelujah,,,, I am feeling much better than I was this morning,,,, although my eyes are red and moist. My thanks to those who put this online for all of us and to this very special school. May your endeavors all be so wonderful!

August of 2024 Still listening to! Such a Beautiful Soul
I first heard this when I was going through some pretty heavy personal stuff. Was I in danger of throwing away God's greatest gift I don't think so but I'll never know. All I know is that I was down a d this choir of angels dragged me from the edge. I have no words but all I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. Merry Christmas and a happy new year
One thing is God doesnt always answer our prayers the way we expect him too but sometimes he sends little Angel's like these guys who's devotion to his word shines bright and shows us that he has heard our prayers and has not forsaken us.

Swim Life There is such a trend to not appreciate talent for what it is and where it comes from. Is this the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? No. Are they talented, darling children? Yes. I feel that way when people get into “who was the best ValJean”? Many people played the part, many excelled in different aspects. Enjoy the moment!
I think when one considers that these are children with conditions that make it more difficult for them to do the same things other kids do daily then the real power of this comes to light. These kids have a hard time focusing due to Autism and ADHD but they came together and gave one incredibly amazing performance. So good in fact I listened to it several times and watched it and never realized they were children with those two conditions.
The fact that they pulled off such an amazing performance speaks volume for those who help teach and guide them.
There's alot of jeleous trolls on the net these days , it dosnt mean anything , the rest of us see and feel this .

No matter how many timesI hear this amazing song, I get tears in my eyes, but this time was so special because of Kaylee and her classmates singing with her in the background. Also reading all of the comments just restores my soul and makes me so thankful and happy.
It always warms my heart listening to Kaylee and the children sing. God has definitely blessed the Killard House. I showed my grandchildren these videos and they watch them many times a day. I am 55 and I do the same! Kaylee is such a blessing.

I've heard a lot of covers of this song, and not one of them could I feel. This I can feel. She has such control - subtle wavers that sound like crying without over-singing - Leonard Cohen himself would probably cry at this cover. It's gorgeous in ways I don't have words to describe.

Beautiful! When I heard these lyrics I heard the meaning that honors the melody and chords Leonard Cohen allowed us to witness from the depths of his soul. Whoever wrote this cover revealed the hope in the “baffled king’s” composition. Humans seeking respite in our Lord’s compassion. Kaylee and these children also find healing respite in their singing.
