    Useful content. People in this demographic are usually only heard sharing scathing, critical remarks about those less fortunate than them. It was interesting hearing constructive conversation that brought insight into that world.
    Black, Indian and Coloured people generally make almost half of the figures thrown around here.

    comfortable on R35,000, never! these people must not have medical aid or life insurance and disability insurance. Just my policies at Sanlam are R15k a month and medical aid for my wife and I and our two kids is R7,500 a month. As a senior software engineer with 20+ years experience I make R105,000 per month before tax and there is nothing left to save each month. R350,000 a month would result in a comfortable life and guarantee a good retirement.
    policies: 15k
    medical aid: 7.5k
    2 cars: 10k
    house: 25k
    food: 10k
    private school for 2: 10k
    After tax I'm left with R72,582, so the government is stealing R33,418 from me per month so they can give grants to people for every baby they have. And now they want to add tax for the NHI, imagine that. And that why we are immigrating to the Netherlands next year. Good riddance.

    I think "find your passion" is terrible advice, and not just because it's so vague it means very little. "Find the money" is a better initial goal. There's probably a better one than that.
    Money doesn't buy happiness, as someone who won a family battle over a will, once said, but it sure makes misery a lot easier to live with.
    Actually maybe something that sounds obvious like, "first, start" might be better (zero expectations). Create your passion (for the time being). You don't need to be inspired to do your best today, so the kind of passion to create might be more like a passion for just "doing your best" (as an end in itself). Be sensible about this, though. Don't commit to it long term.
    One of the troubles with finding your passion is that what follows next can be disillusionment. Those who don't expect anything are never disappointed, as the old saying goes.
    If you're planning to enjoy your money one day when you retire, no, you're probably not going to, but you might suffer less if things go badly for you. In the absence of a better idea of what you love in life, though, just working for money (or for passion for the job) is better than nothing.
    In many places, maybe the best advice might be "Get Political" (workplace politics, I mean). Read Machiavelli, and try to put it into practice. Find a passion for workplace politics?

    With my R7K call centre salary, I'm not gonna say much, but it is refreshing to know that there are actual people who make more than R70K a month in our country. Where I come from if you make more than R20K a month, you are considered to be living comfortable.

    I seriously question the answers about what it needs to be comfortable in SA: Lets assume a one bedroom apartment it Cape Town costs you 10,000. You need at least three times that amount which works out to 30,000 net per month, which means around 40,000 gross or 480,000 per year as a single person.

    I don't mean to be ungrateful. But in my opinion you cannot only earn 35k and pay for medical aid, mortgage, car, children, security, internet, insurance, savings, retirement, hobbies and so on. You will suffer. Middle class is now R50k. I wouldn't have kids without a R100k salary.
