    I live near a library that has a 3D printer that we can use as long as we pay for the material.
    Having an NB instructor was a plus for me. I recommend checking out your local library and see what they have to offer. You just might never know. At least to try and get your foot in the door of 3d printing

    I've spent the last couple of months (since I got the 3d printer) making little plastic widgets to fix all sorts of things around the house. Sacrilege here I'm sure, but one of the first things I repaired were the fuel cap tethers on our fossil fuel vehicles. These printers will even print strong flexible chemical resistant materials like TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). A 3g print was all it took. Not sure why it was made out of rubber originally when a small piece of Polyurethane will probably out last the vehicle rather than decaying in fuel fumes. Oh actually I forgot about the Car companies need for built in obsolescence, enough niggly little things going wrong would be what they need to get you to buy another.

    I was seriously considering getting a 3D printer a few weeks ago. It was an Ankermake M5C that had captured my attention. But, like Nikki, I already have a CNC mill on the way. Upon deep consideration, most anything I imagine wanting to make with a 3D printer, I will probably be able to make (better?) with the CNC mill or by the more manual and traditional methods at my disposal. And the vast majority of material I use or will be milling is salvaged scrap, so no filament to buy.
    I admit that plastic has always been a material I am inclined to turn my nose up at the thought of using. The unsightly layered look of older 3D prints did nothing to assuage my dislike. All that may play in to my continued thinking that I still just don’t see that I need a 3D printer. Good on all those others who think it is just the thing they need. Could be I will yet become convinced of the overwhelming benefits later.

    Glad you added the bit at the beginning! I've been considering getting an X1C for a while now. I have an older Ender 3 Max and I just don't want to deal with the leveling and tinkering any more. I want a more modernized experience. On one hand I guess I'm kind of glad I never picked up the X1C because of the recent Bambu shenanigans but on the other, I'm not really sure what I want to get now. More research is required!

    Also PLA is pretty useless for anything other than trinkets. If you want to print anything that has any sort of mechanical purpose other than being a simple organizer in a drawer PLA is not a good choice for it. PETG is the bare minimum and it is not toxic to print... well not, compared to ABS and ASA. Generally PETG works in most mechanical scenarios.

      Dont be so quick to dismiss PLA, its not as fragile as everyone thinks, this guys shows th-cam.com/video/XLtxo6naLfY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=y5eCOOynjpkG-KJb basically he had PLA prints being used outside for 2-7 years and the worst thing that happened was one grill thing deformed under weight when exposed to the sun all day. Given its heat tolerance of only 55c that should be expected but it wasnt any weaker then before, didnt disintigrate in the sun completely like one was lead to beleive, if not for the weight you could say its fine in the sun.

    1:45 Open sauce is better anyway, but their action seems VERY contradictory to right to repair on a base level. I'm worried about opening a roll of filament , which has left my Creality Ender 3 V3 SE in the box.
    I've made a printing queue, like stuff for my car, the car charger, VARIOUS smart speakers (HomePod Mini rolls like a bowling ball), mounts for my mesh routers [I got them when I was a renter, so ubiquiti wasn't an option and at least they are 6e, so they have a 6GHz backbone and they CAN be wired it's just lower on my to do list until it's warmer]. My IOT devices have their own router [they don't play nice with mesh], so I have a month that I'd considering. I'm also deciding if I want to mount my eufy HomeBase 3 (because my Synology DS1821+ couldn't do that?). I have about a dozen or so smaller projects.
    Home big of an issue is moisture?

      Silica gel beads are cheap (you can use TE's affilate code) and can be reused indefinitely, and storing the consumables in a plastic Tupperware-like container keeps down the moisture ingress.

      @@alsavage1 I guess I'm worrying too much? II have some temperature & humidity sensors., so I could monitor everything.
      What percentage relative humidity is harmful (PLA)? How fast do the spools absorb water? Do I have to worry DURING a print if I return the filament to a bag with desiccant immediately (or if sleeping or out of the hou, within hours) after the print finishes?
      How concerned with vibration do you have to be? Like, put in on the concrete floor of the basement, or my second floor closet is cool? Vibrations, as long as I don't fall (brain stem surgery in 2021, but falls are now rare- also I weigh 130lbs, my family downstairs didn't even hear my last 2 falls), the floors are pretty solid (although it is a timber/stick/stud stud house, because it's like most US homes).I guess I'm asking, how sensitive is the process? I'd be okay if a fall messed up a print, but not walking. I could just play it safe and put it in the basement, but I really like the idea of it accessible.

      @AnonymousFreakYT 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Depends on the material. I've printed things in ASA for my vehicle that warped when parked in the sun for a few hours. But a reprint in ABS handled fine. There are also differences at the cold end, too. You just have to research the properties of materials for your use case.

    I'm trying to avoid plastic in all my products. From fabric, food containers, to laundry detergent (use laundry soap instead). I'm 3D printer ignorant. Do they use non-degradable plastic?

    • @harvey66616
      @harvey66616 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      TBH, I'm not sure there is such a thing as "degradable plastic". All plastics will break down eventually, on a time scale from months to decades or centuries, depending on the exact plastic and environmental conditions.
      The various filament types used in 3D printing have a similar range of durability. You can print with plastics that are likely to break down quickly outside, or you can print with plastics that could last for millennia under the right conditions.
      But, even plastics advertised as "biodegradable" or "compostable", I'm not aware of evidence that says that they disappear completely. And as in the modern age we learn more about how microplastics have permeated the entire environment, and through ingestion or inhaling these particles, find their way into our bodies, I agree that we should be increasingly careful about how and why we use plastics.
      That said, I don't think that 3D printing, at least not at the personal, hobby/household level is going to be a big factor in that broader problem. And it can in fact mitigate that or other environmental problems generally, because it allows one to accomplish things without a lot of the industrial overhead normally associated with those activities. Whether it's just an issue of packaging and shipping products inefficiently, creating a custom product that doesn't even exist and so solving a problem in a better, more efficient, more usable way, or extending the lifetime of something you'd otherwise need to throw out (and then buy another) by printing a replacement part and installing it, 3D printing has the potential to reduce your environmental impact.
      As with all things, it will come down to how you use it. The Bambu multi-filament design (as seen in this video) is especially wasteful, with the ability to generate as much or even 10x as much waste plastic as goes into the actual printed item, depending on how you are mixing the different filaments in the print. In other cases, someone might print a lot more than they really need to, or print a design that isn't as efficient in material use as it could be. But with care, you can receive all the benefits of 3D printing without having undue impact on your health and environment.

    • @transportevolved
      @transportevolved  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You’re right that multi filament can be wasteful, but that depends on how you use it, slice it.
      Some plastics are plant derived (like PLA) and there’s been some great advances in bio-friendly filaments.
