At the end of this 1.3 mile trail (2.6 miles round trip), the amazing, magical beauty of Seneca Rocks reveals itself to us. The views are simply mesmerizing! To hike to the top of Seneca Rocks it takes about three hours. Seneca Rocks is famous for its distinctive looks, emerging from the ground like giant teeth. It’s also a challenging, dangerous climb - over the past 40 years, at least 15 climbers have lost their lives here The rocks are a magnificent formation rising nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River. Eastern West Virginia contains many such formations of the white/gray Tuscarora quartzite. The Seneca Rocks Hiking Trail begins at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center, crosses Seneca Creek to the picnic area, and climbs to an observation platform near the top of Seneca Rocks. This 1.3 mile (2.6 miles round-trip) trail uses steps and switchbacks to gain over 700 feet in elevation. Taking a trip to Seneca Rocks in West Virginia and the surrounding area should be top of your adventure list! This unique spot features a spine of rock formations reaching towards the sky and towering 900 feet above the ground. The gigantic upward bulge formed more than 200 million years ago at the end of the Paleozoic Era. What is the legend of Seneca Rocks? Princess Snow Bird, who had grown to maidenhood in the shadow of the rocks and scaled their heights many times, proposed a contest to her father, ( Chief ) Bald Eagle. She would climb to the crest of the rocks as prospective suitors followed. The first to take her hand would become her mate.
