  • My friend Denzel suggested that I trawl through the archives for footage of the diesel buses fast disappearing from London. The FirstGroup B9TLs are a good place to start. Many of them continue to give service in the Capital, but lots have gone to second homes after as little as five years in London. I reckon that of the original 291 First London B9TLs, Go-Ahead still have 45, Stagecoach have 26 (inherited from Tower Transit) and Metroline have 10.
Not all but most of the buses leaving the capital have been converted to single-door. This obviously changes the seating capacity, but unfortunately I do not have the resources to document this sort of change.
Because the Wright Gemini 2 body is still common in London (being also built on VDL and Volvo B5LH chassis), these buses do not look like an endangered species, but the march towards electrification will polish them off before you know it!
I hope you enjoy this look back at the FirstGroup VN-class.
