  • Coming up and interview with a musical genius, one of the word’s greatest living guitarists Carlos Santana. This interview blew my mind. He’s such a guru.
I still reflect on it all the time. He is so timeless, he had his biggest hit ever Smooth AFTER he got inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame… It was actually the 2nd biggest hit in billboard chart history and the only song to be in the top year end charts for 2 straight years… No one’s ever done that. He also tells the story of the 70s classic rock standard Black Magic Woman whom he covered after Peter Green did if with Fleetwood Mac, but Santana now own the song with his signature version. It’s an interview that will have you watching again and again..

Poll: What is your pick for the greatest guitar solo in rock history?

    • @bobjose5855
      @bobjose5855 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do - live. There are so many different, great aspects to the solo and it is done live.
Ask me in an hour and I will probably give you a different guitarist/solo. Jeff Beck - "It's Gets Us All in the End". Clapton- White Room. Gilmour - Comfortably Numb. EVH - Eruption. So many great options.

20:31 I think Santana just invented a new D&D character alignment: "Divine Treacherous"

Well Adam, you climbed Mount Everest with this one !!!! In 1970, when I was 11, my older brother brought home an 8 track tape of Santana’s first lp. He let me in his room in our house in Miami, turned on his black light and popped in the tape. I was blown away by the first few notes of the first song of the very first album. I wasn’t even aware of the Woodstock performance at that point. It was a life changing experience for me. Santana became my favorite artist and when the 80’s and 90’s rolled around I felt like I was the only one on earth still listening, still buying his records. I had mixed feelings about Supernatural because I felt like the general public was only discovering my secret, what I had known for thirty years!!!! Viva Divadip…Viva Santana!!!!

You just put into words exactly how I felt about another artist who had arguably the biggest comeback (or second if you count Santana or even Aerosmith) in pop music history, Tina Turner, when she passed away. I had been studying, watching, reading everything there is to know about her and when she passed it was like my little secret (albeit she had a huge core following, there were a ton of respecting but indifferent peripheral fans) who were leaving their baseless opinions and far-sighted observations to the masses which hurt. It’s like yelling at the tv except instead of one show it’s millions from the major networks to new media to co-workers. Anywho, I’m so glad Santana inspired you and I hope to meet him one day - I’m 1-2 degrees of separation from him. I love his cover of The Zombies’ She’s Not There.

Farewell, Jeff Beck. You will be missed as a builder and true icon of the modern guitar movement. Carlos is a masterclass musician and a great person who is full of humanity. This comes out in his music. I can't get enough of his scorching smooth Latin rythyms and riffs along with his unique interpretation of the Rock, Blues and Jazz genres . His acid-fueled performance of "Soul Sacrifice" is one of my favorite live performances of all time. "Hold On" is one of my favorite songs by him. This song was written by Ian Thomas who is the brother of comedian Dave Thomas of SCTV fame. Ian has written written many hits for others and himself.

I was in Tower Records, S.F. one n ght in 1969 when this pounding Afro-Latin-Cuban Rock came over the speakers. The room froze and we all just stood there looking up at those cheap little speakers.
"Santana; it'll be released at midnight," the guy next to me said.
Coincidentally I had been to a Santana concert earlier that year. Carlos played standing behind the stacks of speakers. We thought "Santana" was the conga player out front sporting the giant Afro and pink shirt with big collars...

Santana played one night in Anchorage Alaska around 1975 and that was the first and last concert I ever went to “HIGH”!!! Brownies and wine pouches. About the only song I remember that night was I Ain’t Got Nobody To Depend On. Later that night we went to a local McDonalds and he came in and started teasing the kid behind the counter asking him if they sold Tocos!! The kid had no idea who he was and I almost fell on the floor laughing.
Wish I had seen the whole concert…..

I'm 53, when I was 16 (in 1985) I was blessed to hear Carlos Santana give a lecture, no guitar involved. He has not changed. His message to a auditorium full of budding musicians had little to do with playing music and almost everything to do with how to live and be a good person. It was very impactful.
The little he did talk about playing centered mostly about feeling and getting rid of all of your pedals... Non of that seems to have changed, probably because it's all still true.

I was on the 7th row, and the one thing I remember most about that gig was seeing Carlos stage right, out of the view of most, sitting on some speaker cases, just taking in the majority of Jeff Becks set. My memory of 'Smooth' comes from the summer of 2000. I was staying in Rouen in a sweltering August in a hotel by the river with cargo ships sailing by and mosquitoes everywhere. All afternon they were setting up in a city square for what was clearly going to be a big show. There was a huge stage down one side and the place was gradually packed. A really good band came on and I particularly remember one number which tore the place apart and had everyone jumping with excitement. It was 'Smooth' of course, and seeing the electric effect on everyone you knew this was a one in a million song.

Smooth gave us those sultry, swaggy guitar licks that had been sorely missing from the airwaves for years... Good show as the rock guitar legends deserved some light following the sudden passing of Jeff Beck...

Abraxis, enjoyable good hearted … The heart an soul of a man singing through his guitar, his music. That’s Carlos
He’s carried that all throughout his career.
His interview shows how well his life and music are one and the same. Enjoyable good hearted not tangled ego and schemes…
His hard journey in life shaped, but did not break, him.
When a man I worked with asked who I thought was the greatest guitarists, there are many and we just lost one in Jeff Beck, I said if I had to chose it’s Carlos Santana.

That was outstanding!!! Woodstock happened just before I turned five and
I can remember Santana on the radio and how happy everyone was. That summer, we actually picked up a few people hitchhiking to Woodstock and my mom picked them up and dropped at the bus station so they could catch the bus going upstate. Santana has played in my music for 53 years now. It is music that immediately makes you relax and enjoy!! Supernatural was an album my son came to me about and I was “Yeah, Carlos Santana. He’s the best. My child didn’t believe I already knew Santana. It’s been wonderful watching him grow into music.

once again I'm giving away my age. I go back to the beginning of Santana's careen with his first album, when first released. When he went to Woodstock, the world found out about what folks on the west coast already knew. I don't care what he said, the Latin feel of nearly everything he did, even covers. You hear it in Soul Sacrifice. Black Magic Women and Smooth all have that south of the border flavor. ;-)

Smooth was a great comeback for Carlos. When he hit the scene, he introduced a Latin feel to rock that was refreshingly different. A very spiritual guy and it shows in his playing. Like (the late) Jeff Beck, nobody else plays like him-totally unique sound. Samba Pa Ti and Europa are my personal faves from his earlier stuff. Great segment, Adam!

Been a fan since the beginning. His guitar playing is in my head all the time. My wedding song in 1988 was the song “The River” from the “Festival” album and I find myself whistling “I Love You Much too Much” all the time without noticing. Desert island disc is without a doubt “Moonflower”; it has it all! But more importantly, his messaging of love, peace, forgiveness and grace is transcendent. Thank you C.S.!

I saw Santana with Roy Ayres in 1978 at the Capitol Center, in Maryland. I knew of Santana from the radio, loved “Winning “, but knew nothing of Roy Ayres or Brick, the show opener. It was general admission so we ended up down on the floor , as one does, and the place was just full of people dancing and moving to the music. Not like the dancing and swaying at the many Dead shows I went to, but people truly feeling the music and the beat. It was a beautiful show. Excellent interview. Carlos Santana seems incredibly cool.

Man I love Carlos. I've seen him many times live in relatively small venues like the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. His concerts are a spiritual event. Like he said, it doesn't matter if you are an atheist or whatever, you feel a connection and a joy that is universal when he plays. His band is always packed with culture and musical wealth. Isn't also cool that he hired a 15 year-old Neil Schon?

The second album I owned was Abraxas. My dad got it for me at my request, although he was incredibly embarrassed by the cover. My dad also drove me and two of my friends to the Coliseum in Richmond, VA so we could see Santana. That was in the early 70s. Fast forward to "Smooth," a song that I could listen to 10 times a day and not tire of it. What an incredible body of work!
