The way the scene ends with Steve saying "I had a date" then the immediate cut to credits is still my favorite ending to a MCU movie.

I find it hilarious in Phase 1 because Mickey Rourke had a great Russian accent as well - yet as soon as he tried to say something in Russian it sounded absolutely horrible - pretty sure Weaving doesn't speak any German either.
Marvel's got some great accent coaches, that's for sure.
Fun fact: that scene where Peggy touched Steve's chest after his transformation was a genuine impulse from Hayley Atwell.

That brief touch Peggy puts on Steve when he first comes out of the Vita-Ray chamber was completely unscripted. Hayley Atwell just couldn't resist...
The physics of how Captain America's shield works is one of the great mysteries of cinema. We're mostly just supposed to suspend disbelief and accept that Steve can make these crazy throws and that his shield will always come back to him. I think in the later movies he has a sort of magnetic pad on his forearm which is magnetised to his shield, so he can "summon" it by turning the magnet on, but I'm not sure.
Mostly it's him doing the math like billiards and throwing it correctly. The serum makes him much smarter overall as well as being able to work out tactics on the fly.
In theory, if his metabolism, muscles and everything else got better after the serum, it is possible that his senses and coordination got better too.

The actor who plays Erskine, Stanley Tucci, is a star with a character actor’s resume. He’s been in everything, and played everything from a serial killer (The Lovely Bones) to a sprite (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). He’s played a gangster twice (“Billy Bathgate” and “Road to Perdition”) and Julia Child’s husband (Julie and Julia).
And also a mugger (Undercover Blues). Tucci is always a face I love to see pop up in anything.
And a fashion maven (The Devil Wears Prada).
And a chef - I read the script to and watched "Big Night" in a screenwriting class. Which he also co-wrote and co-directed.
I always thought that a first watch through of the MCU should absolutely be in release order. It’s how the filmmakers intended. Otherwise you’ll miss references to things Or ruining of things meant to be a bigger reveal. Subsequent viewings it could be fun to go based on timeline order, but they were written in a way that release order gives the best experience I think.

Watching "Shang Chi" Early would get you a reference for Iron Man...
Iron Man, the "Ten Rings" are the Terrorists in the desert, with a bunch of untrained, non funded Numpties, who have no real Purpose.
"Shang Chi" has the "Ten Rings" as a Millenia Old, Rich, Trained, Elite Global force backed by a Super Hero.

Yes, Steve meant to get caught while knocking at the front door. It was his way inside, where he could further distract Hydra while the others made their assault. It worked perfectly. Stupidly dangerous, but it worked.
Release orders are always the way to go. The execs know to put something out there first that will hook the audience, much like Lucas did with Star Wars. Iron Man/Robert Downey Jr. really did that for the MCU.
To be fair, The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton was the first MCU movie.
11:15 fun fact: many people congratulated the people who worked on this movie for the special effects on Chris Evan's body in this scene. People didn't know that the scrawny Evans was the CG, not the one in this scene
The scrawny body was a body double actor, that they CGI'ed Evans head on. I honestly can't believe people would think that was Evans' real body, instead of what he did (train a lot to get muscles). They just have to look at the real Chris Evans to see he isn't 5'4'' and extremely skinny in real life. Did they think Marvel would want to spent CGI budget to make the character taller and buffy for the rest of that movie and the next half dozen movies??
32:40 - The Super Soldier Serum kept him alive in the ice. Basically it was suspended animation.

Another actor from LOTR (actually Hobbit) besides Elrond, Thorin is the spy who steals the serum.

Great reaction again, Addie! And thank you for watching them in release order. That's the way it's meant to be seen. And it's one thing to watch a Marvel film here and there...but to watch them in order...it gives you the best context and world building for the MCU. It's a way that you get super invested into the storylines and the characters, so that you really care about what's happening with them and where things are going.

In the dummy grenade scene before the Super Soldier Serum, Steve wasn't the ONLY person to rush the grenade - Agent Carter did, too, but Steve got there first.
I actually had great appreciation for this movie. I watched this when I didn't have a lot of movie knowledge (I was introduced to the MCU on 2015, AOU being the first I watched on theaters) and did not know who Chris Evans nor Captain America was. His transformation surprised the sh*t out of me lol

Right before Chris Evans played as Captain America in the Avengers. He played as The Human Torch of the Fantastic Four.

But really, when I heard he was going to be cast as Captain America, I wasn't thrilled at first, because I hated his Human Torch portrayal. He redeemed himself as Cap.

Always warms my heart when someone takes their first step into the MCU. Even more so when they watch this movie. Steve is one of my favorite characters in this franchise and off the bat he is vastly different than the heroes before him. Tony is a celebrity status billionaire with swagger, Thor is a literal god from legend, and Banner is one of the brightest minds on the planet. Then you have Steve Rogers a simple man who only wants to do the right thing his true strength is his character. Movie was pretty simple and straightforward no complicated twists or shockers but what was really sad was Steve waking up in the present day the war he fought having been long over and everything and everyone he cared about is gone now he’s lost in a world he doesn’t understand with no one. Steve fully expected to die in that plane crash only to survive with life as he knew it literally over. To answer your question its never said directly but apparently the serum enhanced his mental capacity as well as beefed him up he didn’t learn rocket science overnight but Steve can calculate the arc and ricochet of when he throws his shield it has some merit as prior to getting the serum Steve was a talented artist and once he got the serum he instantly memorized the locations of the hydra map just by looking at it.
Steve Rogers is also Hydra's most successful agent.

Definitely agree with you on watching these in release order. It definitely makes fitting the pieces together more fun. My gf on the other hand is avid on watching in Chronological order which isn’t too different aside from swapping around a few movies with Captain America being first to watch instead of Iron Man.
@Jermare Yeah. It’s more of a how we prefer to watch it between the two of us because I prefer cinematic order for other things too like Star Wars but she likes going chronological, especially if we’re marathoning.

As @Jermare says, that's great when you have already seen it, but I would never recommend that to someone watching for the first time. I find it odd actually that Disney+ even created the Chronological list in the first place.
6:09 - the actor who plays Doctor Zola (the guy with the glasses) also voiced Dobby, the house Elf in the Harry Potter films.
Okay about the shield:
1) The shield comes back to him because he throws it in such a way that it will ricochet of surfaces and come back to him. Essentially, Steve is calculating the shields trajectory as he throws it.
2) Physically, the shield SHOULD NOT RICOCHET. They explain that its completely vibration absorbent, so it realistically hit a wall and drop straight down. But its cool to have it bounce, so people ignore this. However i have seen people explain that the edge of the shield isnt completely Vibranium, so that could explain that
They never exactly explain how Steve gets "frozen" and revived in the films, but it is a suspended animation thing that allows a WWII era hero to be around in the 2000s.
Another sad point to this love story is... their first and last kiss was chasing a Hydra plane

They did explain it, he went down in the ice. I imagine it knocked him unconscious, then the ice put him in cryo sleep and the serum allowed him to hibernate. I imagine when he finally gets fished out of the ice its in modern times, 70 years later, he probably just woke up days or weeks after being unfrozen.
@@thatperformer3879 The serum prevents the cells from rupturing from ice crystals. First responders had a motto from ice rescues "You are not dead until you are warm and dead." For normal people that is based in seconds/minutes of exposure, the science fiction of the MCU extends that to decades for Steve Rogers.
One thing I don't recall if they ever mentioned in the MCU films is that one of the Howling Commandos that Cap works with during the war is Sgt. Jack Fury, who will have a son named Nick...
Addie, the pure joy in your face from (re)watching these movies is exhilarating! This is definitely one of my favorites, and the best moment: "Is this a test?" with the grenade, and talking with Erskine afterwards. Still gives me goosebumps.

Captain America is one of the best
Addie, the 3 best things about the Marvel moives is the choice of casting for thier super-villans, the way the films all run concurrently, and the fact the stories are straight from the comic books first published by Stan Lee in the 60's and 70's. Captain America was actually one of the 1st heros Marvel came up with in WW2, when they were called timely comics before changing it to Marvel once Stan took over...welcome to the Marvel Universe,love your reactions!
The opening scene in Norway reminds me of the flashback scenes from Hellboy tbh. I'd love to see Addie react to those films as well someday.

The serum they gave Emil and Bruce Banner to become the Abomination and the Hulk was an offshoot of the serum given to Steve Rogers to become Captain America.
Great reaction, Addie. Cap is one of my fave heroes - truly a "Man out of time." If you get a chance to watch the 2 seasons of Agent Carter I think you'll enjoy those, too. Looking forward to your Avengers reaction!

This is my favorite movie of the entire series... so glad you had fun re-watching it. The best thing about this movie is how it ties in with the ending scene of Endgame. When you see it, you will love it...

Yep Steve Rogers aka Captain America truly was a good man soldier, probably even better than the unknown soldier. It only made sense that HE would become the leader of The Avengers!

I 99% agree with release order with one exception in Phase 3. Release order puts Black Panther between Ragnarok and Infinity War, and it just doesn’t belong there. Black Panther’s story picks up immediately after Civil War, and the post credits for Doctor Strange, Ragnarok, and Infinity war all flow together. So I recommend bumping up Black Panther and watching it after Civil War, or at least before Doctor Strange so the flow of those movies isn’t interrupted. I like to watch Civil War, then Black Panther, then Homecoming, then release order from there.
By the logic of timeline placement some people try to watch Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel before Infinity War so those last 2 Avengers movies can be watched back-to-back. And Black Widow takes place immediately following Civil War. But I recommend keeping those in release order, otherwise after credit scenes become pretty big spoilers.
I can't speak to the end credit stingers, but seems to me that Ant-Man and the Wasp is a perfect fit between Infinity War and Endgame, BUT Captain Marvel should be before Infinity War. I'd think the 3-movie lead-up to Infinity War ought to be... Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Ragnarok? Then Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, then Endgame, right?
@@SchulzEricT The only issue with that order is the end credit scenes. The post credits scene in Captain Marvel leads straight into Endgame and is kind of a spoiler for Infinity War.

yeah, in the comic books, cap fought the nassis and red skill from 1939 to 1945. he stopped publishing, and was brought back in 1965, frozen in ice as here. the original artist came back to do him, jack kirby, who also helped create hulk and others. so in the movies hes frozen much longer. marvel kept bringing back their older heroes from the golden age. the personalities are much better developed in the movies, but the main character arcs are pretty much the same. so old fans love them and new fans can dig the better writing.

What I love about Chris Evans' performance is that in every movie after this, you can feel skinny Steve in his acting performance. He never entirely leaves despite all the changes the character goes through.
The "frozen in time" thing needs explanation.
In the Golden Age, Captain America was created for the express purpose of convincing Americans to join the war on the side of the Allies. He was created for pure propaganda, and was used for that even more after America joined the war.
This part of the comic book history is represented by the "war bonds" section of the movie.
Anyway, the character lost popularity after the war ended.
During the Vietnam war, there were big debates about the war. The pro-war side constantly invoked patriotism, but kept making arguments that were simply not in line with American values.
That was when Marvel did the "frozen in ice" story. Captain America was brought back to comment on the inherent hypocrisy of those pro-war arguments during the Vietnam war.
Since then, this has defined the function of the modern version of the character.
He appeals to jingoists, so writers can use this character to deliver criticisms that they might not accept from anyone else. For example, in the second Captain America movie, the main theme is about government surveillance in a post-9/11 world.
Immediately after 9/11, jingoists argued in favor of government surveillance without the usual court permission, and argued "if you did nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear." The second Captain America movie is delivering a rebuke to people who said that after 9/11, and it's delivered in a way they will accept because it's coming from an ostensibly patriotic character.
Remember that Steve disobeyed orders and went behind enemy lines to save a bunch of soldiers and was rewarded for it. Later, you will learn of a character doing something similar in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Remembering this detail will add poignancy to that other story.

It's weird how some people seem to think that between Steve and Bucky, _Bucky_ is the troublemaker, when we clearly see that his idea of fun is nerding it up at a science convention, while Steve is picking fights with guys twice his size. 🤣
The part where the guy got shredded was the most violent scene in the MCU to this day, Black Bolt's death is nothing compared to this.

When Nick said asleep he meant frozen in ice for 70 years... took them that long to find him. No one would survive being frozen but since he is a super soldier his body was able to resist and eventually did not age as he was frozen.
I could be mistaken, but I thought that at some point he gets a sort of magnet type technology for his arm that can pull the shield back to him. I might just be making that up from somewhere though

Captain America was created by writer Joe Simon who took a young Stan Lee in as his intern. The comic book cover of Captain America punching Hitler is the actual first issue of Captain America drawn by the king of comics and Cap co-creator Jack Kirby! His comics were included in care packages sent to boost morale for the WW II soldiers.

Jenna Coleman who's in this film has played Clara Oswald in Doctor Who. She was The companion of The Eleventh Doctor ( Matt Smith ) and The Twelfth Doctor ( Peter Capaldi ). David Bradley played Solomon in a doctor who episode called Dionsaurs on a Spaceship and played The First Doctor in Twice Upon A Time.

By the way, you mentioned earlier on, during the grenade scene ... that Steve Rodgers was the only one that jumped on the grenade. Actually, if you go back and take a look there is one other person running towards the grenade ... Agent Carter. Anyway, great reaction once again.
Chris Evans is perfect as Captain America lol. He did a great job as Johnny Storm too tho - I hope we get to see Addie react to the Fantastic Four films someday.
Technically, in the comic book stories Captain America was actually the fifth Avenger.

In for a penny, in for a pound:
THIS is the point that Old Man Rogers landed after the return trip.
1940's tech would not be able to fix his QPS beacon. He would have to stay in the sidelines to avoid disrupting the history as he knew it. Living under assumed names until he could contact Peggy and Howard after the events of the Agent Carter series. He would have to be more close-lipped than some strange folks.
After all, loose lips sink ships.
I thought you said this was a "re-watch" for you, yet you seem to be reacting as if you had never seen it before. Even after ten years you couldn't have possibly forgotten everything you saw.

Saw a guy on TH-cam prove that Steve has to pull his punches because if he hit someone in the face with full force he would shatter their skull, and turn their brain into a slushy; which would give them an all expenses paid one way trip to the morgue.

When Steve and Agent Carter are riding in the car on the way to the procedure I understood exactly what Steve was doing. 😀Someday I'll no longer be so insecure that I won't be able to talk to women. After I'm dead. 😀

Fun Fact: the War Bond costume is his original outfit in the comics, including the shield.
The Howling Commandos had their own comic in the 60s: Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos. In the late 60s Steranko created Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD. It was an attempt to cash in on the James Bond/Man From UNCLE craze. That's when Nick got his eye patch. He originally appeared in a suit, like Bond or UNCLE agents.
The ice he crashed into, along with his own enhanced metabolism, kept him in suspended animation instead of freezing to death.
