Jennifer Lopez is in the midst of a major career moment - the release of her album “This is Me … Now" and its complementary musical film, “This is Me … Now: A Love Story," not to mention the Amazon Prime documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told." It follows her reuniting with now-husband Ben Affleck after decades apart.
“This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love," Lopez told USA TODAY earlier this year. "I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” Lopez says. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”

Lets be so real, if Beyonce or Taylor Swift had pitched a visual album movie thing to streaming services, they'd be fighting each other to get the rights. Its not the type of media thats the issue, its JLo herself, she's not marketable and the streaming generation doesn't care or like her enough. Studios just don't want to tell her that.

I have a weird fascination with J. Lo because she's the only celebrity I can think of in my entire lifetime who has amassed as much fame and longevity as she has while seemingly *never* being liked. She never got re-evaluated for her talents and contributions to popular culture later on like Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse, but she never really faded into irrelevance either like most of her contemporaries from the 90's/early 2000's. She didn't even have a career-ending scandal that you can point to as the ending point. But even at her absolute peak, it was not cool to say you liked J. Lo and she's been an easy punching bag for as long as I can remember. Over 20 years later and her reputation has not recovered and she's just as widely despised as ever, but she's still a household name who gets booked for projects and is uplifted by Hollywood. People keep saying that celebrities should stop trying to be relatable since they’re so obviously not. J. Lo seems to be at a crossroads because while she did have a modest upbringing and fought tooth and nail for years to make her dreams of fame and fortune come true, she lost touch with reality and no longer has any idea of how to relate to the common man.
Seems like she can’t decide whether to just fully embrace being a super wealthy and out-of-touch Hollywood elite a la Gwyneth Paltrow, or try maintaining her roots and remaining a somewhat down-to-earth figurehead like Adele or even Shakira. She tries doing both, but fails, so she comes off as a self-absorbed megalomaniac who has, ironically, forgot where she came from without the camp of a Gwyneth or a Mariah, which widdles down her appeal to basically no one

I was 14 and had a similar opinion. I thought it was flat out an annoying song.
Plus, when most artists make a song about their home town, it’s about how great their home town is, or how much they love it despite its problems, or something that pays tribute to their home town. This was a song about her home town that talked about how great SHE is. It paid tribute to her. As an Australian (by that I mean myself), it’s very distasteful to talk about your own greatness like that.
So yes, I too was struck by how the song was essentially Jlo name-dropping her hometown to brag about her greatness, and ironically, her humility.
Could I word it like that back then? No. But we could clearly smell the bullshit.

Ham and cheese on a role and an orange drink is a totally believable bodega order from the 80s. Orange drink could mean an orange quarter water, a Hi C, or a sunny D. Back then a lot of places only had one of those. If you said orange drink they knew what you meant and depending where you were you'd get one of those three. And it was fine because you just wanted an orange flavored drink. Idk why people think the ham and cheese is weird. I've ordered that myself usually with dijon mustard.

She has always came off as a proud Puerto Rican or Nuyorican(depending who you ask). Being bothered because she went to catholic school and somehow negates her Bronx connection (if given the choice trust, most Puerto Rican parents in NY would rather send their kids there). She never said she was from the hood, that she ran the streets. I think she unfortunately feels very slighted by the media and critics and she carries it on her shoulder. Lo stans - and it was obviously pre-Twitter. But I don’t know what became of their fandom 🤷🏽‍♀️ but it’s really just always the same thing from her.

What I noticed that I don’t see a lot of people talking about is JLo has an acting voice. It’s slightly different from her speaking voice. I only realized it in the last couple years but realized she’s had this fake acting voice all throughout her career. This is probably one of the unconscious reasons people think she’s a bad actress because she does this voice. She also does this whisper thing when her characters are upset and she’s trying to convey emotions. And emotion to her means to speak and whisper. And she’s done it in a lot of her films. Shes essentially playing the same character a lot the time because she sticks to the same traits and speaking inflections .
So to watch that movie that’s all about her and her story that wasn’t profound or displayed any new information that you didn’t already pick up from the blogs or tabloids and everyone in the movie is on the same acting level as her made it horrible to watch.

With the quickness, I raised my hand and I started to discuss my distain for J Lo, and how she is only Puerto Rican, when is convenient to her and her brand.
This was right after two of my other classmates were praising her performance, and how amazing they thought she was yada yada yada. I could just not resist myself from putting in my two cents as well.

I've enjoyed these J-Lo deep dives. To be fair, the Bodega may actually be genuine based on the era that J-Lo grew up "on the Block". There was a commentor who mentioned that when J-Lo says "orange drink", she likely means a Quarter Water that came in an orange flavour. He also said that ham and cheese on a roll would come with additional ingredients, like lettuce, tomato etc. He grew up in NYC during the 70's-80's, so maybe it's a generational difference that makes J-Lo's order seem untrue.

I wouldn’t ever say she’s famous for nothing but I also can barely remember anything she’s in or has done that isn’t mostly just used to make fun of her.
I will give her credit, though, she’s got drive. How many other celebs have had a career like hers without really like… producing anything so notable, at least for a *long* time? @@peacebeyondpassion2 In the documentary she made about creating the visual for her album. She literally said in the documentary “I know no one was wondering when the next jlo album is” and people told her multiple times in many ways not do it. Like yeah, maybe she hoped people would look at it and think she was a mastermind but she knew when making it that no one was begging for this like she was beyoncé. But she wanted to do it, bc she’s vain!
And those concert prices are not based on the success of the recent album bc it was a flop. It was based on her being a legacy act, a lot of older artist charge a lot of money even though they ain’t topping the charts anymore bc they know people will spend money on them. So yes, she set those prices bc she thinks ppl were willing to cash out that much money to see “the” Jennifer Lopez but I don’t think it has anything to do with her thinking her movie or album was great bc it flopped.
you guys just have more fun laughing at her bc you think she doesn’t know that people are doing that 😭 they’ve been doing it for decades. She hasn’t had a proper hit since like 2011 like she hasn’t been shit for a very long time and yet, she persists bc she’s vain.
I think the thing about jlo is that she wants people to take her seriously, she wants the prestige bc she already had the hits. She’s never won a grammy, an oscar, or a golden globe. It’s why she campaigned so hard to get nominated for her hustlers role, why she tried to make this vanity project seem like it was some elevated piece about her love life. And why she attempts to sing Barbara Streisand. Her past two husbands are grammy and oscar winners, the last long term relationship was a baseball legend.

I might be in the minority on this, but this makes my heart break for her. Ive never been a JLo fan or supporter but she undeniably works very hard, is a talented dancer, has a perfectly serviceable if not "nice" singing voice, a fine enough actress, and when her songs come on in the club, people still have a great time!...she also seems to have relatable qualities for an artist, like intense creative vision, big ideas, a lot of emotion, and the gumption to "get it done in spite of the odds". Yet the word "relatable" in a branding sense just doesn't stick. Yeah, her music has always been a bit style over substance, and there's the early-career cringe of her ghost singers, but i would never go so far as to say it's fully "out of touch". She's just clearly insulated *enough* to the point where her stuff doesn't land or misses the mark because "no one cares" or "no one gets it". That must be an unbearably amorphous criticism to hear, because its like, how do you apply that as an artist without everyone saying you're only "relatable" when it serves you? Almost every major superstar out there is making branding decisions that serve themselves. But for some reason no one likes HER.
Maybe the way forward for JLo is to laugh at herself a bit more, which it seems like the movie had the potential to do/almost did? She's always struck me as someone who had this capability for irony and self awareness but its rare that we see 'quirky awkward relatable wedding planner JLo' and 'mega super bowl halftime pop star' JLo in the same room (except for the music video for Papi. Anyone remember that?)
Idk at this point I'm just thinking out loud. She is a very interesting case to me.
