The reason people involved in politics today feel burned out is that social media wastes anger. Anger is a very valuable emotion, it is what motivates us to change things, correct injustices. Throughout history it is what has driven advancement: revolutions, reform movements and political parties. Traditional activism allows anger to be expressed in useful ways that change society: writing our representatives, knocking on neighbors doors, licking envelopes, expressing our views at public meetings, working to help disadvantaged people, peaceful demonstrations. Social media deliberately makes people angry to increase profits ("enragement=engagement") but doesn't provide any useful outlet. People are siloed into filter bubbles, ranting to others who are already on their side. "Owning the libs" (or the conservatives) doesn't do anything to promote dialog or change minds, it is just insulting people for fun. Social media creates lie factories, rumor mills, and lynch mobs, polarizing people into intolerant extremists, preventing any real dialog on the issues.

I have gone on a political media diet sort of like your noise cancelling wetland restorer avatar. But The Ezra Klein Show adds so much more to my life than political sports drama. Do not underestimate the beauty and light you add to the world. Thank you for your efforts

Ezra, such a great conversation. Sometimes we don’t even know when/how to ‘stop’. The world of school for children is all about testing, for kids as young as five years old! I often tried to think about instilling the love for leaning, and the skills (Proficient readers) necessary to get to that love of leaning.

I can completely relate to the concept of earning my right to exist. Existence is absolutely a privilege.
We all need to feel very very fortunate. Especially for men.

I’d say get off social media first: twitter, facebook, instagram, blue sky, Reddit. I only have 3 of those but I’ve been going days at a time deleting those apps from my phone.

There’s an old TED Talk called “Burnout and PTSD.” th-cam.com/video/hFkI69zJzLI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uSCatXUEoQEHtnPq
I think they’re related and interact with each other. The presenter sees an organization’s burnout rate as a measure of their (in)humanity, and I think politics and government in the last few years has been traumatic or trauma triggering as well. Along with home and work stress, it’s been tough for most of us. Great episode!

Try it and you will quickly ruin your life. Chaos is both easy and destructive. You won't keep a 9-5 to pay the bills seeking out disharmony. We are trapped and there is little most people can do except delude themselves. - person with ruined life

@@higgleopss I’m so sorry that you have been through such bad times. Honestly, I didn’t think Rumi was recommending a reckless existence-only saying that moments of chaos and disharmony are inevitable, and we gain nothing by running away from them or pretending that they don’t exist. To live life fully we must embrace all of it.

Has anyone else noticed Ezra's evolution? I started following him about 7 years ago. He seemed empathetic and driven to explore society's ailments. However, now he seems out of touch and less concerned about matters relating to certain groups that he once seemed to be concerned with.
It could just be me, just asking here in case I'm not the only one.

Yes, he regurgitates obfuscation in order to justify why things never actually change. A useful tool, the sentimental, kinder side of our current oligarchy.
