  • In 1959, Berry Gordy gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Bernadette," I Was Made to Love Her," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era.
By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers.
Forty-one years after they played their first note an a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story in STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN.
With the tumultuous sixties as a backdrop, Motown's unsung heroes take the viewer on a compelling journey in time as they trace the evolution of The Motown Sound" from its origins in Detroit to its demise in Los Angeles during the seventies. Through the eyes of the riveting characters who ruled Hitsville's studio by day and the club scene of Detroit by night, we enter a world of unparalleled soul and emotion as the Funk Brothers revisit the sites of their musical roots, triumphs, and eventual heartbreak.
For more than four decades, from the dance floors of the world, to the Detroit riots of 1967, to the war in Vietnam, the music the Funk Brothers created has played a major role in the cultural fabric of all of our lives. STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN finally puts some faces on that music and introduces these heroic musical figures to the world.

The Funk Brothers were the Sound of Motown. They weren’t appreciated like they should have. They were the Best. Thank God that their music outlived the Players. The G.O.A.T🐐

Without question Motowns FUNK BROTHERS were the greatest assembly of musical virtuoso the world has ever seen. No other group of sessions artest has ever come close to the FUNK BROTHERS. No other group of sessions artist has ever come close to matching the FUNK BROTHERS creative genius.
Only those who lived it the 50's & 60's and witness the talent of the FUNK BROTHERS understand today why THE FUNK BROTHERS & MOTOWN will always be unmatched.
    Long live their music

Mr. Ashford said it best when he stated, "We know this didn't have to happen (the documentary) and we're so appreciative of what happened."

When I saw the beginning chills went down my spine. They were brilliant but these originators had no idea that their songs not only were played in England but in Australia as well. A Family group did their version of "Shake Rattle & Roll" thinking it was Bill Haley & The Comets version not knowing it was Big Joe Turner. Even today alot of Boyband/Girlgroup Icons cover alot of obscure R & B Songs and sometimes the children don't know who did the original. Also Parris Island, South Carolina was where Pat Conroy taught for a year that was the inspiration for his novel The Water Is Wide that was made into a Movie called Conrack.

I saw the whole documentary. Much as I wanted it to be a happy celebration of these musicians it was also suffused with a very palpable sadness over their lack of recognition, their seemingly skimpy financial reward, and their personal struggles with substance abuse. By the time I left my seat in the theater I thought, "Probably no studio musicians have given me more pleasure for years, although the Wrecking Crew came close, and yet these men were all but faceless to the public." It's a great doc, but man is it sad. Bless their hearts; their magic lives on and will never die.

The wrecking crew were paid........inexplicably the FB weren't and that is the sad part of the doc

@@coreyzimmerman9782 Do you mean they weren't paid well or wen't paid at all? I assume you mean the former. I seem to recall the narrator of the documentary saying they were paid poorly. Either way it is a travesty and a tragedy! These men created a sound that was fresh, vibrant, and became the easily recognizable Motown brand known throughout the world. What an incredible accomplishment.

I find myself wondering whether any massively successful musicians went back and helped financially reward these guys for all they gave the world. If I was Prince etc, I can't see not throwing a least a few million their way

The alchemy of the players stands apart as no other gathering of musicians has produced anything close. And I think true and accomplished musicians would agree. I will not be able to hear the Motown hits as I did before.
