Our Dad/Granddad/Great Grandad was special and quite a gentleman.
His son and daughter miss him to this day. He often wondered if what he and his contemporaries accomplished would be forgotten. We wonder if he returned how do we explain the Internet and TH-cam. He left us in 1975. He Dad, just press this button!

He is not forgotten. I'm working on a project about the history of those who lived in Northern Manhattan and found him. He remains a gem!

Sissle served as Drum Major under Lt James Reese Europe in the famous 369th Harlem Hellfighters unit that served in Europe during WWI, including 191 days of fighting the Germans in the Argonne forest of France in which they never yielded an inch of ground. The military band of the 369th traveled and performed across Europe, introducing American jazz to the European continent 1917-18.

Noble was the only guy that could wear a Hitler mustache and be cool. I wonder if old Hitler saw Noble in Europe and Noble inspired him to grow the mustache.

The Eddie Coles playing tuba here is the older brother of Nathaniel Coles (aka Nat “King” Cole).

I would be out every night if music was this good today. Heck, I would want lessons from two my favourite trumpets - Ladnier and Briggs.
This is a cohesive ensemble - as all of Sissle bands were.
Terrific music - and isn't that Rudy Jackson on the clarinet and alto. He was with King Oliver's band and took Camp Meeting Blues to Ellington and Creole Love Call was born. Ended up in India with Cricket Smith and Teddy Weatherford in 1936.

Noble and his sizzle sizzling. Wonderful to hear typical sounds from 1931.

Que buena musica de los años 30, es musica en su esencia donde resalta la ejecución instrumental, el ritmo, el swing y desencadena emociones, sentimientos que brotan en el baile.

Yes!! I’ve thought about this, it seems a lot of times it was for necessities sake. Especially for black entertainers. There were so few opportunities - a bandleader may be like “we don’t need a singer but do you dance? Can play horn?” and if you needed the job you’d better hope you could say yes!
Times are different now a lot of people have the luxury of being able to choose one thing and stick to it.

Just about the only good thing to come out of the Great War was Sissle and others (who served in it) bringing this music to Europe.

That's Sidney Bechet playing clarinet and sax behind the singer. Alas, he takes his solo here on alto.
