  • In this video, Hilary Mason, Chief Scientist at Bitly, outlines "The Dirty, Unspoken History of Data Science" at Mortar Data's first NYC Data Science Meetup.
She gives a brief history on the emergence of data science as profession and illustrates the four key elements of what it takes to be a successful data scientist.
This was taped during Mortar Data's first NYC Data Science Meetup on February 11, 2013.

Im currently a RN with a Master degree and working on a second Bachelors in Computer science and this has helped me to understand that I want My PhD in Computer Science so I can be like you. thank you :)

I would have called Claude Shannon the father of Information Theory, not Richard Hamming (2:49). Don't get me wrong, I think Hamming was awesome. But it was Claude Shannon who essentially started it all with "A Mathematical Theory of Communication," published in 1948 in the Bell System Technical Journal.
Other than that, I liked the talk.

Before cleaning the Data any further, you should clean this audio.

The bitly link referred to in the video is dead. Big data broke it.

When the median salary is 100k+ in an age where kids are born with cell phones, of course data science is going to be sexy. Unfortunately, the drop in demand is probably due to companies deciding they don't want to pay data scientists that much and that they can probably self teach themselves the same skills with the ever more accessible technology and education (i.e. MOOC's) and reap the benefits. Just a thought.

6:20 I hope before "Obtain" the data measures have gone through a validity and reliability check otherwise the "data scientist" might not be modelling what they hope is reality. This may sound like "Research Methods 101" but ...

From the outside looking in, people are probably amazed at all the rhetoric and hype about data science. The truth is that there are only a handful of companies making innovations while the rest are just treading water, going to conferences and recycling the lip service they’ve heard within their respective companies. Most data scientists get bogged down with reporting and other deliverables that go nowhere and make recommendations that fall on deaf ears due to inept management. There are too many senior level and mid-level managers who feel threatened or marginalized by enabling a data scientist to really shine. If a data scientist is allowed the freedom and latitude to develop models and data-driven business strategies, then the managers will be perceived as obsolete.

Samfia Dangless I think that happens in other areas as well. You don’t need data science to feel stifled in your job. I’m a engineer with lots of good ideas. Management ain’t interested.

"It concerns me that it [data science itself, or the dreams of grandiose surrounding data science] is starting to pickup steam outside of the tech community, and we should do whatever we can to fight against it." 10:20
Your frustration is felt, but the evolution of business alongside the evolution of data science can be a beautiful and complimenting thing. The reality of life and human progress conflicts with dreams of exclusivity. Foregoing resentment, think that those who know less and lack technical skills, yet want the help of true data scientists could instead be taught. Do you want to teach, or live in an exclusive world? This seems contradictory to the nature of data.

+Charley Grossman I agree, if data science grows with business, businesses will only become more precise and more efficient which is certainly a positive in more than 1 way.

I think there is nothing to do with data , basics are required to correlate with analysis , inference , modeling in all aspect of behavior of objects , matters and living things . So if you learn only how does the tools work that won’t make any sense .
She lacks information in many aspects .

A lot of blah with no content. What is the education background of the people who talk about data science?
Data science started form astrophysics and finances??? Then it would be called computational science - which was that rare specialization a few years back - until some businessmen/managers invented "data science."
No mention that a data scientist - like wine- gets better with years of experience. NO, we don't want to say that!
And oh, no mention of computer science - then why talk about hating Hadoop? what do you know about it?
Machine learning? Another vacuous term for many: it used to be statistical learning in informatics departments. Now it means even hitting mindlessly a button of a canned tool to perform a K-means classification; yet, can that so-called data scientist explain what K-means does?
Shannon is the father of information theory. See for example Coding and Information Theory by S. Roman.
And thank you for the inferred reassurance that formal education and experience are impediments to being successful.
