      I'm not sure that price is the only problem.
      Take bubble tea for example. The price of bubble tea in Hanoi, as i notice, has gone up like crazy. A koi bubble tea is almost 100 thousand VND now, a lot of other brands sell bubble teas at around 60-70 thousands. And who buy bubble teas? students! Who are considered to be always broke.
      I think the problem with Starbucks is that Vietnamese people think it is not strong enough. It's like you've been smoking cuban cigars and then someone give you a light cigarette. You often only go up, not down the cafein or any addicting scale.

    As the Vietnamese were born in Vietnam, I used Starbucks in Vietnam, which was totally different from the US stores. They design the taste to fit Vietnamese people like me. Honestly, I wouldn't say I like US Starbucks at all. However, the main reason should be the price and the speed of services. If I return to Vietnam, I will look for street foods, food courts, or tea stores instead of Starbucks, McDonald, or Popeyes.

    I'd like to add that most of the coffee produced in Vietnam is robusta, while the coffee served at Starbucks is arabica. Robusta has a stronger taste, while Arabica has a smoother taste. As mentioned in this video, price is definitely the main deciding factor. Starbucks is an off-shore franchise that uses arabica beans (which is more or less double the cost of robusta globally), and they have to compete with MANY local coffee shops. In the USA big business has a huge advantage over small businesses, but in this case it's the opposite.

    I visited Vietnam earlier this year and one of the things really liked was there were no Starbucks. Vietnamese people have far too good taste to go somewhere as crap as Starbucks. Personally my favorite when I was there was Highlands, got an amazing cup of coffee there. It's incomprehensible to me why Starbucks is so successful around the world. I live in China and Chinese people can't get enough of it.

  • @Gigi-kd1zl
    @Gigi-kd1zl ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I think when people compare coffee in VN and coffee at Starbucks, they tend to compare two different things. In VN, those coffee they serve so commonly is the equivalent of expresso shots in America. And the American coffee is just a water down version and it’s totally different from VN “coffee”. So for Starbucks to be successful, maybe when a VN customer order a “coffee”, they would have to understand that that’s means 3-4 shots of espresso and condense milk or sugar for sweetener. I’m wondering if they ever thought of that? 😅

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It doesn't matter as Vietnamese people won't pay the price that Starbucks ask for when they can get Viet coffee for way cheaper. They'd only go to Starbucks for Instagram pictures. Starbucks is propped up by Westerners/Koreans there.

    I think Dustin has analyzed very accurately the reason why Starbucks has not expanded in Vietnam. I agree with his opinion that Starbucks does not fit the coffee culture of Vietnamese people, and also does not have an advantage in terms of price and quality compared to local coffee shops. I fully support Dustin to switch to making content about Vietnam for foreigners to know and understand more about Vietnam. I think he has the ability to do that, and I will always follow and support him. 😊

    Not surprised Starbucks didn’t last. Same reason it was one of the worst corporate failures for its Australian expansion as well. Great video - my only cringe was when you kept saying ‘ex’ presso…not sure I can take coffee tips from some who says EXpresso!😂 also fyi Vietnamese coffee primarily is robusta based which actually typically has TWICE the caffeine as most other (arabica) based coffees found in the rest of the world’s dominant coffee beverages.

      Cà phê pha phin nhỏ giọt thì đậm đặc hơn do lượng nước sôi ít. Quá trình chắt lọc chậm rãi và lâu dài nên lấy được hết lượng cà phê ra khỏi cà phê bột rồi. Chỉ có điều hàng ngày không phải ai cũng có thời gian để chờ cà phê lọc từ từ kiểu lược bằng phin.

    Vietnamese coffee kicks Starbucks 12 different ways, then it switches its feet and kick it with its other feet 🙂 I was never a coffee fan eventhough I tried Starbucks coffee and Peetes over 10 times. Then I moved to VN in the early 2000s to live and work there for 9+ years and loved Vietnamese coffee, cafe sua da and bac xiu for the most part. I have moved back to the US for 10 years now and stopped drinking coffee here. The taste isn't to my liking and for the price Starbucks charge, I swear I will never set foot in a Starbucks again.
    Throw in the fact that VN cafes all look differently with their incredible investment into their decor, 85% of them are instagram heaven (I'm not an instagram person), the pride the VN owners and employees put into their product, free wifi, complimentary ice tea as a chaser, no pressure for you to drink and leave, and I want VN cafes to continuing killing/slaughtering Starbucks, Peetes, other Western franchises for another 100 years.
