  • I restored my old Craftsman bench vise, No.391-5180 ! Dating back to the 1970s this vise was made in Japan. I found it at a flea market several years back,I think I paid 20$ for it. I thought it was time to make it nice again! Thanks for watching! Thank you for your support!

I have a similar model. It was found in the vicinity of my grandpa's old shed.
He let me keep it and I'm trying to restore it now. However I'm having trouble removing the mouth from the body.
I can turn the crank and move it closed and all the way open, but I can't seem to get it to come off.
It's an old 5160 and does not have any numbers before.

Nice job I just found one of these today at a estate sale paid 20 dollars for it. I like the black and gold colors you did.

Love your videos! I was getting ready to restore this same Craftsman vise exactly as you did it so I figured I’d ask you if you would do anything differently? (Stripping method, type of primer, type of paint, type of paint pen, etc.)

Great demonstration. I am working on disassembling my craftsman vise. I can't get the hold down screw out. It's seized up. Should I try anti seize spray or a torch?

Nice paint job and I'm with you about keeping the character marks. I bought my craftsman vise at Sears in the 80s and all the marks in it are from me. Mine is also made in Japan so thanks for the info about the 6mm screws for the jaws. As a DIYer, not likely I'm ever going to replace them. You almost lost in the beginning with heating up the screws -- I woulda heated the casting to expand the hole. But I defer to the old-timers because I saw your method worked so great job!

Damn...that turned out very nice Ricky!
You might want to keep an eye out on Craig's List for a decent used booth for a good price.

What’s a vice like this worth paying for in used conditions.

I was wondering how those blast guns did for jobs that wouldn't fit in my blast booth that I got from Harbor Freight. I wonder if you could make a booth out of a box to catch a bunch of the beads to reuse. Five full sides and a hole in the sixth side to work through. Good to see you with the respirator. Nice restore job. Worth the 8 hour wait from when we chatted early this morning.

Glad I was able to help. You can reuse it until it becomes a powder. I used to use a big heavy duty tote to spray my parts in

If you got a piece of plastic or old window you can make a blast box. Thin plywood or paneliing with clear something to see.
