So I ordered the DS1621xs+ but while in transit to my door, I saw this review and realized that it doesn't have the Hybrid RAID (SHR) that I guess ONLY the lower-end Synology NAS systems like the 1621+ come equipped with. Why on Earth would Synology take OUT this useful feature from of a higher end model is beyond me! I hope that the folks here at NASCompares really stick it to Synology so that they implement it into future higher-end NAS boxes. I understand that SHR is perhaps not the most efficient of RAID configurations, but anyone who has HDDs of varying sizes like I do needs to use a Hybrid RAID otherwise there will be tons of wasted space. So instead of keeping the functionality in the higher end systems and allowing the user to decide what they want to use, Synology removes the feature and forces us to use a traditional RAID configuration where all the HDDs need to be the same size to fully utilize the space. So, Synology, instead of getting $1,700 from me for the xs, you're going to only get $700 on the lesser model when I return the xs for the 1621+ that has SHR.... and I'm then not as happy of a customer for getting something less than I was expecting. Boo Synology, Boo!
Hey there! First of all, thank you for all of your very good content. My question: for PLEX and Video Station 1621xs+ is a much better option or not? Thanks for your reply.
Love your videos, Rob, keep it up! This particular one was just what I was after. The 1621+ has more appeal to me based on your excellent anslysis. But, I now need to see the video where you compare it with the QNAP TS-h973AX, which is another serious contender in this space. Your comparisons based on price point and relative functionality are spot-on. Would love to see you do a full-on video editing set-up on these models to see how each handles the heft of 4K RAW at 5:1 and 12:1 compression. 👍🏼
Thank you very much for the great comparison review. PS: It's kind of strange why audio volume is so low (I think youtube must add some 'autocheck' for uploaded content volume recorded as a warning, this forces to bump up volume, then when switch to other 'normally' recorded your ears will get a huge hit from your speakers (you will wake up the whole house if watch video in the night ) :)
Actually as said the price difference is so significative that just performance will not justify it to most of us. For me that I own DS412+ (yes still running after 10 years without an issue) I actually see the value of the flexility offered by the SHR. Not having the option of SHR on the XS+ to me is a big subtractor in purchase it. I would rather wait for something more balance. Also the fact that the XS+ come already with 10GbE make that PCI slot completely useless. I don't think I will go for the "just" + version of the DS1621, the CPU brand does not convince me at all.
I wonder how well the DS1621+ can handle Plex vs the DS DS1618+ I own currently. Hardware transcoding? The craziest idea I've had stuck in my head for a few days: Could the DS1621+ or any other Synology NAS "see' an Nvidia video card like the Quadro P2000 / P4000?
I doubt if Synology will ever enable gpu support in their business oriented NAS's. The NAS has an option or tha comes with a gpu card are designed for NVR.
@@amithimani8163 well SHR is dissabled in their business units and that was the first thing I re-enabeled when I bought the 1621xs+ so I can see a similar «hack» becoming availiable fot the gpu
Same. Not sure how much more powerful it is though. Most of all I wanted 10gbe while having the PCI availiable incase synology ever will support a nvidia gpu
Hmm, will the cheaper one still be alright for editing video? (6k BRAW on specced out mid 2017 iMac in Davinci Resolve) Or should I look for a NAS with Thunderbolt 3 instead?
Great vid, the xs+ series are top end in Synology and geared towards business. I have the dual 10G card installed on 2 of these units in an HA setup with the built in 10G as the heartbeat and the card's 2x10G in LACP. Planing to go all flash on the internal 6 bays (using RAID F1 which you showed on the specs comparison but didn't mention), and I have an expansion bay with a 5 disk RAID5 array Cached (r/w) on the 2 NVMe drives. 30Gbps I believe is necessary. Not for the home/Soho , but for an SMB you can't otherwise get this type of performance , protection And convenience for this price!
2 questions... 1. If I am connecting this to share folders with people and not directly to a computer, it appears that SSD drives for RAID 6 is overkill compared to 7200 RPM because it's faster than the 10Gbe can deliver. Is that correct? 2. For a production environment, would you recommend 2* ds1621+ (w/ 10Gbe add on cards) configured in failover HA mode over a faster 1* ds1621xs+ ? Thanks
I have been a supporter of Synology for nearly a decade, owning 6 of them, from 2 bay all the way up to 8 bay. Their smaller but underpowered units are affordable and value for money, but once you start getting into systems that have useful power and the ability to add more memory, 10Gbe, and M.2 SSDs you gotta start thinking they price gouge as bad as everyone else. They try to stop you using much cheaper 10Gbe cards, and Kingston or Corsair RAM which really helps your unit with its memory caching. These 3rd party modules void your warranty and give you a message that it detects non authorised RAM. Recently I made a server for one tenth the price of one of their more powerful units. I hope my conversion is correct but would you rather spend £600 or £6000 for a server that can do VMs, hardware pass through etc. Synology’s pricing strategy backfired on me and made me look for alternatives. My 8 bay 1819+ is still too underpowered for what I need so will likely the last one I will buy.
When you're a power user that's fine, in an SMB with limited IT staff who must take care of multiple systems, the 1621xs+ has been dream! Acting as a Shared datastore for a VMware cluster. Btw which model were you looking at for £6000!?
Thank you for the very useful video! Sounds like for me, the way to go will be the cheaper unit with either a 1 or 2 port 10G expansion card. I plan to have just 4 or 5 cameras recording continuously to this thing, and I plan to use it for Time Machine and other general file server usage (storing VM images, Linux distros, etc.). I won't be doing virtualization on the thing unless necessary (I have a 32 core Threadripper machine for that). And I like the SHR support.
Thinking about upgrading my DS916+. I can see why some might go for the DS1621xs+; but for me looks like the DS1621+ is not only a better fit for my needs, but my budget too. Thanks for laying out the facts.
Great review. The lack of SHR for me is the main reason not to buy the DS1621xs along with the PCI slot that is actually useless. I would take the newer Ryzen even with slightly reduced performance as it will be far more efficient. Better still, buy the 1821+ and get two extra bays and stick the Dual 10GB card in that. I suspect the amount of DS1621xs sales will be quite low. If you really need to use your NAS for VM duties then look at QNAP for a true server processor IMHO. That coming from a 10 year + Synology owner!
Just bought the 1621xs+ for editing. 6 x 16TB Ironwolf Pros. 16gb ram. 2 x 800gb cache ssd. Solid as and great performance.Could add another card to support another edit suite without issue. 8 bays would have been better if I could find one available here at the moment but for my needs this is a great cost effective enterprise class solution. Especially with Ironwolf Pro16TB drives on sale for half price. Should my PC's 32tb internal RAID fail I have back up media that will play back almost as well.

Great comparison video - thank you. For me, the main concern is with transferring existing 4x SHR drives to the xs+ system. The lack of support on xs+ is a major drawback. Are you planning on testing the migration of SHR drives to xs+ system?
What is interesting is that the DS 1621+ now comes with ECC memory! Something usually reserved for their enterprise line. The old 1618+ could support either non-ECC or ECC memory. If Synology specifically requires ECC memory on the 1621+ and insists on its use for warranty purposes then it can become an expensive proposition to upgrade this machine. I could certainly see ECC memory supported in their XS+ line. I do not know whether one can install non-ECC memory in either of these and have them work. Maybe it is something that NASCompares can look at. I presently have a 1618+ coming to the end of its warranty life and loaded it with 32 GB of non-Synology non-ECC memory and it works. I should have done this a long time ago because the 4 GB that it was supplied with was a constant constraint.
It's like there's a huge price gap between $800 for 1621+ and $1600 for 1621xs+ that desperately needs to be filled. I'd want a middle option between these two models that would cost around $1200 so much.
