    I was looking to buy a DS420+ to stream my large movie collection from. This video made me aware of the DS920+, which, amazingly is only $NZ60 (£30) more than the DS420+ here in New Zealand. Absolute no brainer. Thanks for this great video.

    I waited, waited, waited ... and pulled the trigger on a 918+ after noticing the 920+ soldered on half the ram and didnt go 2.5Gbe. The slight bump up in CPU power wont affect my use. In the end theres just not enough to justify.
    I saved a lot $, as I caught the 918+ on a sale day after the 20 series hit the market, so saved a bundle over its own price just a couple weeks earlier.

    I have been looking at NAS for awhile.
    I started out wanting to get a Synology DS2XX. The more I research and compare, I have come to my conclusion.
    In Singapore,
    DS220J - SGD$229 (USD$170)
    DS920+ - SGD$849 (USD$624)
    For those who most probably won't be scaling up, get the DS220J. For those who wants to prepare / have the option to scale up, get the DS920+. If on budget, get DS220J.

    Thanks, makes me happy with my recent DS720+ purchase. It is like greased lightning compared with my seven year old WD MyClouds (which have never missed a beat by the way).

    • @cwillis92
      @cwillis92 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With recent hardware issue WD is having due to the security failings of OS3, which now makes the My Cloud Mirror unsupported. I'm looking into getting a Synology because even though for the most part the my cloud hasn't had any data losing mess up, but it also hasn't always been a walk in the park. I've had the mirror for about 7 years I think maybe 5, so it's definitely time to upgrade the drives & enclosure. Did you use WD Red drives when you made the switch? If so were there ever any comparability issues?

    • @waterbourne9282
      @waterbourne9282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cwillis92 Yes, very disappointed in WD with their poor options for replacing the MyClouds. I liked them because they were nice and simple, but also had the Safepoint feature which i used for scheduled backups (the aut scheduling on mine stopped working but otherwise they were great). I also would have bought a Netgear NAS because I've had a really good run from their other gear over the years and to reduce security risk from Chyna but there was simply nothing in stock at the time here in NZ.
      I went with 2x WD 14TB Red NAS HDD , 3.5" SATA3 512MB Cache, Designed and tested for RAID environments 1-8 Bay NAS,3 Years warranty (MPN: WD140EFFX) and been running them for 12 mths now, haven't missed a beat. I have them setup in simple RAID 1 config so that if I decide to move away from Synology in the future I can. In hindsight economically I would have been better off with the 920+ and 4x smaller drives, or the two large ones and room to upgrade them later, but I figure I'll be upgrading the whole unit after 5-6 years anyway. Apart from concern over the vulnerability of Taiwan to Chyna I'm very happy with this setup, and big thanks to NASCompares and SpaceRex for making it very easy to select which unit and drives, and how to setup and config it.

    • @cwillis92

      @@waterbourne9282 appreciate the reply this definitely helps figure out what to do since after next month the enclosure won't have really any level of security.

    If I want the powerful features but am happy initially with two bays but perhaps later want a bit more, then it seems to me rather than get the 720 with later the full expansion module, I'd be better to get the 920 straight away but start off just using two bays for just like €100 more .. Does that seem like a good way to think about it, or is there any other consideration?

    Kind of wish they had a 10GB network card option on the DS920+. Any chance you could do a performance test with Link Aggregation on 920+?

  • @PitboyHarmony1
    @PitboyHarmony1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    NASCompares - Robbie; Re: Link aggregation.
    One thing that is always talked about but not detailed, is about benefiting from the second LAN jack on our NAS 'with link aggregation and port trunking enabled'. There will be a lot of us who hear that as;
    "With a better router / switch and a more than 1Gbe jack on my motherboard (or on a pci card)
    it sounds like I can literally double my NAS access speed',
    ... but how does this all plug in together?
    Is this the correct way to think about this?
    How do I make it happen?
    Questions from the truly newb perspective, just jumping into the NAS world:
    - How fast/what capabilities does the router/switch and computer hardware LAN parts need to have?
    - Are we talking 2 physical cat ethernet wires running from the switch to the NAS? Does the cat variant matter? Cat5, cat6, cat7 for any of our LAN wire runs, can I benefit from higher rated cables?
    - Are there any other hardware details to keep in mind? Motherboard or card, router/switch, cables NAS ... miss anything?
    - Running multiple computer stations; do they ALL need to be upgraded to more than 1Gbe (say 5 or 10) in order for the aggregated 2Gbe to work, or can one main station enjoy the 2Gbe and other stations continue with just 1Gbe, or can the router not do that?
    - Running windows systems; will we run into conflicts with this change for other regular router usage or windows / browser operations?
    - And finally; how do we software enable all this on the NAS, and how do we discover and monitor actual LAN speed improvements in DS?
    This might be worth a series of deep dive videos, once the new product lines are covered and you slow down a bit.

      There should be like 1 billion documents and videos about link aggregation on the internet, it is not a new technology.

    • @redmatrix
      @redmatrix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Link aggregation does NOT benefit a single user in the way one might think. No, you don't get double or quadruple access speeds (2 nic, 4 nic). What it does is allow less bottlenecks if there are 2 or more simultaneous users/devices.
      So with 1 nic, you are using the NAS at full speed just fine, and then your spouse/partner jumps on and tries to use it as well. Now the speed is split between the both of you. Instead of 110mb/s for you, your speed drops to 55, and your spouse also gets 55, until one of your tasks is complete.
      If you have 2 nics, plugged in, with aggregation, you are still only going to get 110mb/s speeds, whether or not you are the sole user. If someone else uses the NAS at the same time as you, they ALSO get full 110mb/s speeds (max, of course, in theory) without affecting your usage.
      Oh, and for the m2 cache options... if you only install one, it only helps you when writing to the NAS. The 2nd one works when reading from the NAS. (or vice versa) Either way, you need BOTH to cache read and write.

    The x20+ series is the first generation Synology that made me switch to QNAP.
    The x20+ models all are all limited to (dual) 1GbE lan where QNAP with the x53D series has a 2.5GbE lan standard and has PCI support to upgrade to NVMe+10GbE lan in the future.
    It used to be that the software of Synology was way better than Qnap but the differences are small in 2020.
    Y
    Synology and qnap are Chinese companies which could be a bit tricky with my personal data in these times of information wars.
    But if you look passed the network speed limitations, the model line-up from synology is still very strong, and worth to consider if you are into the Synology OS and software support.

      I can understand that you want 2.5Gb, thing is though that there is pretty much no switch out there that isn't a combined 2.5/5/10G switch. Therefore it's not gonna be cheap and you could likely just buy another device and go 10Gb. I can see the upgrade path for sure with QNAP, but their OS is just horrible compared to Synology

    Most of these NAS comparisons effectively push the higher end machines. What is more reasonable is to ask where my use is likely to be in the next 5 years, and choose the box that will handle that. The reason is, of course, that any NAS purchased will be yesterday’s device in 5 years, and moving into obsolescence in 7-8. And a superseded unit can still be great as an on or off-site backup unit, which is what my venerable DS213 is doing in retirement.

    The new ds?20+ series is NG for me with the new 2 port USB3 policy. Even in a private environment you need 2 USB ports at the back. One for a PSU unit and one for a backup unit like a large USB-HDD at home or a Tape-Drive in a small business case. All of these should be connected directly to the NAS and at the rear for safety reasons. I think my next NAS is a ds1819+ since it has everything I need and it is better expandable.

      There are videos that help with the model naming convention. Last 2 digits is the year of release. The numbers to the left of that indicate how many drive bays you can have with the extention appliances, in theory. So a 2 bay with not expandable would be 2YY, while expandable 2 bays would be 7YY. (expandable units house 5 drives)
      If there are 2 digits to the left of the year, and it starts with a 1, then it can connect to TWO expandable appliances, hence, 10 drives plus the onboard bays in the appliance you are looking at. re: 1820 = 8 bay, that came out in 2020.
      Any letter(s) that come to the right of the year, if any, indicate something too. "J" series are low end, less features. No letter is middle of the road, and the "+" indicates high end. "Play" is also middle road, and "Slim" just means they only accommodate 2.5" drives.

    • @redmatrix
      @redmatrix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go with the "J" series rather than the plus "+" series. Much cheaper (with less features [that you say you don't need])
      Or go with the NON [J/+/Slim] models, slightly better than J series, it's middle-of-the-road.
      For 10TB of storage, do you want to have redundancy? Or the storage is in-and-of-itself redundant? There are 1 bays available, for a max 16TB. Or try 2 bays in RAID-0 (no redundancy), but with smaller drives. (say two 6TB drives costs 120+120=$240, vs one 12TB drive that costs $400)

    • @redmatrix
      @redmatrix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to say, but you're F*cked. (If you don't have the files copied anywhere else, that is... .laptop, desktop, etc)
      This is why raid-0 is not recommended. Hard drives don't last forever. And if you used the default raid-1 (2 or more drive bays) you would have less storage space, but have redundancy for the inevitable drive failure. It would give you time to buy and install a new drive.
      Follow the 3-2-1 rule. Have 3 copies of your valuable data, on at least 2 types of appliances/devices, and 1 should be off-site in case of fire or theft.
      Which means, photos on your phone, on your NAS, and in the cloud, count towards the 321 rule. But, not everything can be that inexpensive to operate. I have my home videos and video projects on my desktop, on my NAS, and on an external hard drive that I keep at my mom's house. Every month, I use a separate external drive, back up my important files, and then visit my parents house and switch out the drives. I come home with the one I had at her house, ready for next month's update.

    Excellent review but can someone help with a question. Why replacing apple, google, msft cloud drive cost of 120$ per year give or take for 2TB, with upfront cost of about +660$. Technically for +600$ you get multiple years of cloud storage (which gives you off premise storage in case of fire), and assuming you need to upgrade NAS and cloud providers will increase capacity on high tiers over time, why not just stick with apple, Google, MSFT?
    Curious for input, especially if I don’t plan to use security camera and for streaming use netflix.

      it's a good question. In the end I spent more money them I would for 5-10 years of 2TB cloud storage and Netflix. Especailly if I add the side costs like a static IP (which is much better than the proxies). A NAS is a bit a hobby. However there are some advantages. If you need more than 2TB like 5 or 10. You basically can't pay for that on the cloud. it scales better. I could easily go to net 30TB in a 920 without huge Costs. Even in Backplaze that would be 150$ a month. If you get a fast one like the 920 performance is much better too.you are only limited by your network. And finally I like the control. I like my fotos in folders in the format I choose and me being able to use a serverside software of my choice. I can access them through Syrology drive or samba on my PC directly even if I don't have the space on my PC. Backing them up was a nightmare before. The Synology Backup software alone is worth the price IMO. I love Plex. But if you don't enjoy tinkering with Tech I would stick with cloud services too.

    On the DS920+ do you have to run all four bays to start. Or can you just run two bays and can add the other two latter on?

    • @redmatrix
      @redmatrix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use just ONE drive to start. You would NOT be getting the option for redundancy, however. (same as if you started with 2 or more drives in RAID-0, meaning, NO redundancy)
      Also, for redundancy, the RAID volume is based on the SMALLER drive capacity. You can't mirror 4TB of data (drive 1) in a 3TB drive (drive 2). You need to think ahead of how you want to use your NAS. Always use same-size drives, [or bigger (but you 'lose' the overhead (as dead storage) until you upgrade all drives to the bigger size)]

    Can someone explain why 10GBs Ethernet matters if drive speeds are 250MBs

    • @nascompares
      @nascompares  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      V good question! So, the main factor is RAID. when you have multiple drives all in a single enclosure/box, you can create a large blob of storage by combining them (eg turn 4x 2TB HDDs into a single 8TB visible blob of storage). Now these RAID configurations vary and some provide maximum storage, some provide safety nets (known as redundancy) that protect your data if a single HDD fails/dies. However almost all RAID configs effectively multiply the typical HDD performance, as they involve read/write actions happening on all drives at once (as opposed to a single HDD). This means that the performance increases notably. That's why multi bay solutions can benefit from 10Gb/s or 1,000MB/s connections. Hope that helps and I hope you enjoyed my video!

    • @PokeFangOfficial
      @PokeFangOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nascompares YES thank you! I couldn’t find anyone explaining that. They would just talk about the drives in terms of storage quantity and then talk about the speed of connectivity. But not about the specifics of how disc speed is increased by raid, and how the correlates to the ethernet speeds. I also haven’t seen enough people talk about the types of cables being used to make sure they can carry the bandwidth that the ports and drive allow. I feel like someone needs to make a video on optimizing that flow for speed.

      Well ... sure at first glance it may seem confusing to those who come into it knowing nothing about the product line or nas products, but 5 minutes in everyone can say 'oh, ok i get it':
      Chassis-Hard drives-Year-series
      - DS; 'DiskStation', to separate it from enterprise products
      - first number; how many hard drives the box has the capacity to support regardless of the bay count it has,
      - second number; the model version, which is the year of release,
      - series; J for cheap ... think junior, Value for intermediate, + or plus is the high end. This particular part of the nomenclature is odd and doesnt mean much at a glance, but there ya go.
      In a world of alphanumeric product names that have zero relation to whats in the box,
      Synology actually have a naming concept that makes sense to what ya get.
