Well, Honda made a LOT of them! And they hold a special place in soooo many people's childhood memories. And, at least for now, they're still sort of affordable... although they are already getting a bit pricey for ones in really good condition!
@@Hagerty I recently rebuilt a 1981 CT 70. The stock rectifier will not work correctly, get a new rectifier from the Pardue Brothers. DR ATV will have any parts that Trail Buddy does not have. FYI
This project is so very cool. We get to see something that takes as much work as a big project but only on a smaller size scale. Mark is really great at what he does. He has only made the whole thing better by applying his acknowledge, experience and abilities to the project. Well done. Can't wait to see the finished project!
I really like that you guys showed him reading the service manual. Just goes to show that even professionals still need to be freshened up on the correct procedure
I was envious of a friend that had a Honda 70 like those. It was so much better than the other mini bikes out there. Nowadays I am definitely too big to use one now LOL That orange is really nice looking.
I love following along on this CT70. I have a ‘74 in the same orange. I rebuilt my forks and you guys make it look so simple. There was lots of sweat and work to get them off.

I have always been amazed at how simple moto forks are. My and my mates' mountain bike forks are super complex, both coil and air sprung. The sort of thing like on that Honda is what you would find on crappy cheap bikes, but unlike those, it apparently works.
Very nice!! The paint job on the frame looks incredible and the front forks look like they are brand new again! These forks are easy to rebuild and work on compared to the modern KYB and Showa forks. :)
Amazing project progression guys! These Trail 70's were all over the place in the early-mid 70's. I would be curious if Honda still has any sales data for these models. Keep up the great work!
Honda used a clear coat on the forks. Typically on the older bikes that clear becomes yellow. The best way to fix that is to use a wire wheel or scotchbrite sanding I n the lathe grains and reclear them. They come out perfect minus all the little dings they get over the years. I send all my forks to mike palmgren owner of vintage Motorsports restoration. He has the exact shades of clear and a couple jigs so the fork body doesn’t roam and stays on the angle to keep the lathe scratches from factory. He also rechromes the fork tubes for that perfect seal all for $300. That’s also including rebuilding the shock. Honda Japan hires him for all their museum bikes that’s how good he is.
I had a ct70h 4 speed Honda Mini trail 70 when I was 12 I had a 90 carburator on it so it did about 60 mph it was lots of fun it was aqua blue and a new seat
The popularity (along with the price) has exploded on these CT’s over the last year. I’m almost done with my 78 with a 140cc swap. Check out the modders group on FB, tons of guys with custom CT’s.
My dad bought one of these new. He wanted the bike but mom wanted a piano. So a trail 70 and a piano was bought. Mom still has the piano 55 years later.
How much stain did it take to paint everything in the video? I see kandy colors sold by the half pint. Do you think that is enough with reducers added, or should I purchase a quart or more? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Is that how Honda did the paint from the factory or is that the way the shop you took it to replicates the factory paint? It seems like that would be a labor intensive process to do from the factory.
Hi. I have a 1971 Honda Dax. I’ve taken it apart to start some work on it. But I’m curious as to the value of the one I have. It’s in ok shape. But it’s hard to find any info on the Dax.
@@uliwehner I guess when they were talking about this "magical" 3 stage paint job I assumed it would be more than just a basic candy. I mean I helped put one on my Harley back in the 80s and it wasn't that difficult.

Great job ! One of the most overlooked parts a restore on those old hondas are the internal parts of the forks being replaced .. ENJOYED

I've been painting/heat coating a Dynomax cat-back exhaust for my Jeep, so this was right up my alley!

The frame does look beautiful but personally I would have either replaced the stanchions or at least got them re hard chromed.

With just the first coat of dye, that looked pretty slick. Not as slick as 70s Honda flake orange, but pretty damn slick.

Ohhhhhh this is so good
If you paint the springs, it will peel off when working inside the stanchion. Leaving flakes in the fork oil.
The spring on these ones go on the outside with a rubber gaiter over it so no need to worry about the oil getting contaminated.

Please send the forks out to be ground and re-hard chromed. The restoration will be incomplete with rust pitting on the forks around the triple clamp.

Oh man, I just thought of it - take the fork lowers and have them anodized. Maybe black? Keep your eyes open for a junk bike to do that to.
Mark definitely got us interested in doing some sort of CT70 or Z50 resto-mod at some point in the future. So many things you could do!

20-30 minutes. The clear coat needed a bit longer.

It was a 3-stage paint job at the factory as well.
