    My son and I are into birding so we enjoyed hearing the birds along highland trail. He got great shots of both falls and birds.

    Heading there this coming weekend. Thank you for the Idea. It is so close to our home, I kind of forgot about that as a spot to go to.

    Nice one guys. Wow. My daughter went to college in Scranton for 4 years and I never went over there to see it. Now I really wish I had. Guess I'll have to make a special trip some time.

      You should it definitely worth it. How was Scranton? My daughter is interested in possibly going there.

      @@BillEricPhotography Actually, my daughter was at Marywood, about a mile from U of Scranton. Marywood was pretty good though, depending on her major.

    beautiful pictures! so glad you like central pa!
    If you go back, start at the bottom. or, at least see the huge falls at the bottom across Rt 118- on the side of the smaller parking lot. that's where the major falls are. you don't even need to hike to see them! just down under where the road goes over the stream. that's the most dramatic spot.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe next time we will do that. We started at the top and we're exhausted by the time we got to the bottom.

    I just spent 3+ days there. (Two prior day trips made it *very* clear you could never hope to capture everything or do enough justice to it in one.) You guys beat me to the punch of getting something produced. A truly spectacular place.

      It really is pretty wonderful, and it was a lot more than we expected, both physically and artistically. I think in the future we will definitely go back, but have a plan for maybe breaking it into multi days, especially depending on the weather.

    My wife and I were talking about trips we want to take in 2020 yesterday. A photo trip to Ricketts Glen is near the top of our list. My plan between now and when we go is to practice with ND filters and settings so I'm proficient when I get there. I plan to take my new Breakthrough Photography 10 stop ND filter with a step up ring to cover all the lenses rather than tinkering with different stop reduction filters. Do you think just the 10 stop will be enough? I'll be shooting with a 5d Mark IV, 16-35 F4L, 24-70 F4L and 70-200 F4 L II. Thanks for sharing your trip; I always enjoy your videos.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes a 10 stop will be good but it might be hard to focus through it. I used a 6 stop all day and was fine. Really depends on the light. By the end of the day I had no filter on.

    Really enjoying the channel, gents. I bought the M50 over a year ago, collected a few M lenses, and then life got in the way and stop taking photos with it. When you have a pretty good camera phone in your pocket, that tends to happen. I stumbled upon the channel as I started using it more and trying to brush up my skills. Water landscape shots is something that I've always wanted to get into, but have never had the time or patience to try. Are there some affordable ND filters to get started with? I would probably put this on the EF-M 11-22mm or 22mm, so 55mm or 43mm filters, respectively. I heard you mention perhaps staying away from the variable ND filters.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, glad you found us! As far as ND filters go I would definitely stay away from the variable kind. You might also want to stay away from no name brands that you haven't heard of before. I have had very good luck with Tiffen ND filters. they are decent and not super expensive. For the size filters you are looking for I think they will be very reasonable. Hoya is also another good brand. Thanks for watching!

      @@BillEricPhotography Awesome, I've used Tiffen filters in the past. I may look at one of their multi filter packs with the various stops. Any feedback on the Breakthrough Photography or K&F Concept filters? They seem to be very prevalent on Amazon right now.

      We had a chance to try out the breakthrough filters at the expo last week and they were very nice to handle. The reviews on the image quality with them are all good. They have magnetic filters too which seem pretty cool and very easy to use.

    Do you think a 24 - 105 would be wide enough to capture the larger falls?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably, that's a very versatile focal range.

    Hi guys - thanks for the informative video. I'd like to know what variable ND filter you recommend for the Canon M50. Thanks!

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a tiffen but we both find that most variable ND filters have some sort of color cast issues we prefer the solid ones.

    I have issues with sharp focus. What focusing mode did you use? I shoot Sony and they have wide AF, zone AF, flexible spot and Manual focus and DMF, i.e digital with manual for small adjustments. What would you recommend? If you use flexible spot, how far into the scene do you generally focus so everything tack sharp front to back? Did you focus stack? How difficult was it working with tripod as I imagine hard to find level spot to get tripod adjusted. I presume you used self timer orvremote trigger to avoid camera shake? Finally my camera and lens have IBIS. Turn it off when on tripod? BThanks, beautiful images. Also how dangerous did you find the trails?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Richard. We pretty much always use single spot focusing. It’s very easy to move the spot around in the frame to focus in exactly what you want. But when shooting on a tripod we will generally use manual focus. Tripods are pretty easy to use on any terrain, just have to find 3 spots to put the legs, which can be varied in height. It shouldn’t be necessary to turn the IBIS off when on a tripod (the camera should detect the tripod and work accordingly) but I always turn it off anyway. The trails at Ricketts Glen are fairly difficult in some spots on the upper half of the falls areas.

      @richardpoland4074 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the answers to my questions. Using a wide angle lens how far into the scene do you focus so that everything is sharp? I think the rule of thumb is 1/3 into the frame, i.e. pick an object 1/3 of the way into the scene to get everything sharp from front to back or do you use hyperfocal distance scale? Thanks

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll use depth of field preview and check the scene to make sure everything is in focus.
