  • Khalkis sits where the Evia Channel narrows to about 40 metres across. One of the few places in the Med where tidal streams have to be taken into account - the pilot gives tidal speeds of 6 to 7 knots through the narrows at springs.
    The low-level bridge across the narrows is opened only at the slack water which occurs during the night hours, the period of slack water being around half an hour.
    Vessels wanting to pass through have to register and pay the passage fee to the port police during the day, before anchoring close to the bridge in the evening and waiting for radio instructions to go through.
    You need to be on the ball, the window for movement is short, and the port police don't mess about.......
