    You do these projects that have so many mindnumbing tedious steps and they come out extraordinarily beautiful! You have the patience of a saint, the mind of a mathematician and the skill to back it all up. Very cool project!

    I have really enjoyed your videos, especially the segmenting ones. That is something I plan on getting into eventually. I just purchased a Supermax 1938 drum sander, and a Laguna 2436 lathe, as well as a Rikon dust collector, and air filtration system.

      Hey, I totally get it. I'm a small TH-camr (make stave drum shells) and it's almost impossible to everything--for me, especially when I'm working on something new and trying to figure things out as I go.

    Awesome man! Ever since I read Necroscope by Brian Lumley back in high school I've been interested in Mobius strips and then since I got into woodworking I've been thinking that I should make one. I sorta thought the best way would be with bending thin strips and laminating them, but I'm liking your way. It seems you have more control of the final form.

    We really love your work. You come up with some killer designs! Technical question: Do you need to be concerned with expansion and contraction of the wood when you have so many segments? We recently had an issue with wood expansion that somewhat ruined a project of ours. Thanks for all the great videos!

  • @paxwoodworking
    @paxwoodworking 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I say make more videos in this style if it’s not too tedious to stop and talk every once in awhile. You have an entertaining personality, but your projects are unique and it’s interesting to learn about your process via explanation. I can certainly understand the desire to just turn on the camera and go without the need to stop and
    talk about your work, but I gotta say I like what you just did here 👍

  • @oliviervaujour7736
    @oliviervaujour7736 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, a well done video and object. BUT I'm a bit lost in the concept of your ring. You mentioned rotation of 4 deg around the center axis (perpendicular to the large surface), you glue some of them like that, then you remove with the sander 4 deg on a tilt axis. OK, but on the video we saw that all your triangles put through the sander machine are all aligned the same way (no rotation) we see that at 2.51. At 3.14 we see on each board that the triangles ae aligned the same way on each one, but a different way between the boards. So I don't understand... if you could help. I have tried it on sketch-up to see but it's far too complex to align the different pieces on two different axis.

  • @mynameisntJon
    @mynameisntJon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So if you put the completed mobius strip through the drum sander, you could sand the whole thing all the way around in one go since it is one continuous surface?

    Hate to be pedantic, but that isn't a Möbius strip. It is an umbilic torus. I do love it though. I might have to make one myself... if I only knew where to get those stretchy ring clamps.

  • @josephplatt160
    @josephplatt160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kyle Two question ... What is the size and thickness of the 90 triangles ... I notice that when drum sanding to get the 4 degree angle the triangles are slightly offset from centre Why is this?

    • @WoodByToth
      @WoodByToth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are sanded with a 4° angle and 4° twist. If all the triangles were sanded at a 4° angle you would have a circle that’s in the shape of a triangle all the points would connect with each other. If you sand the triangles with the 4° angle and a 4° twist in each piece the triangles will rotate as they go around the circle and create a Mobius strip
