    I wanted to buy the new Africa Twin but I think you convinced me and steered me towards the Tenere especially because I'm a little tight on the monies. Thanks for the input and your long term review. Really convincing. ^^

      You won´t regret it, it´s amazing bike. I have around 25k km on mine and it´s truly all rounder. I can´t even count how many times I dropped it while in offroad. Pretty hard sometimes, but it´s just like he said in the review, it´s build like tank. Few scratches, other than that nothing. Heavy duty machine! And reliable. And simple, which is great.

    i just had a test ride 0n 2015 tenere.this particular bike was very vibey.it was fully kitted and only 3000 miles.guess im used to my 600 v twin,much smother than a single.if i went off road alot then this would be the bike i would choose over my transalp but im more of a tarmac person.you always give great straight honest advice with no bull.keep it up.thanks

    The Tenere is proof of Yamaha's good engineering, as with any other Japanese bike, the Europeans aren't quite there yet, with some brands still with reliability issues, which is not acceptable in 2019.

    I had an MT03 bought in 2010 which I sold recently. It has the same 660cc engine as the Tenere. I regret selling it. Strong engine, good handling and brakes like I have never experienced on any other bike!!
    We live and learn eh?
    I now have a Kawasaki Versys 650 which really is a totally amazing bike .... if Kawasaki did a "Tenere" or enduro version of the Versys it would be total class leader!! It would blow every other enduro bike into the weeds!!

    I have xt660r model 2005. And happy with engine performance. It is durable bike. I have a ten motorbike now. But this bike goes anywhere with no worries at all. Bmw r1200gs adventure is reliable bike for long distance riding. In 2013 I traveled from Muscat to Hamburg crossing 10k KM in 25 days. And last year 2015 I traveled again from Muscat, Oman to China via silk Road, crossing 14k KM in 35 days. As I said this bike is build for cross countries and Yamaha Tenere build for any terrain with a steady speed and less horse power.

    Thanks for a greate review. I'm thinking of buying a "Z" and the choice is between this and a GS800F which has almost twice the horsepower and are in the same weight class. But I think I get more value for money by going for a xt660. Another thing is the high (1,4m) and to make it lower you have modify it as you have done (forks and rear linkarms/seat). The engine is bulletproof and is used by several manufacturers and are good to know when you are far from a Yamaha dealer. The EFI is poor but will impove by using PC as you have done.

      novica dendic , Hi man! I have Dr Big too, sr42a :-) I can tell you that the summer 2016 we spend almost two weeks in the Balkans with a friend that drives the same Tenere 660! We were tripping in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania and we finished in the greek islands! The bikes were super overloaded, we traveled wit our girlfriends, so 2 persons on heavy bike... I can tell you that in the most of the cases there were no difference at all! Maybe in overpassing cars and trucks the Dr is a bit quicker, but just a little bit! From the other hand the Tenere is just another level of machine! New generation of motorcycle, but from Yamaha decided to keep the durability and the simplicity of the machine! I like it very much! Of course i tried my friends motorcycle and he tried mine, and i find the Yamaha much more comfortable. On the Big , like my Big and everyones else , you feel more beast power. No wind protection, nothing! You dont have a warning lamp for oil!!!

    • @kasteneda
      @kasteneda 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello to you to :)
      I must tell you my story with bike. I went on cruse ship to earn money. Didn't have enough for yamaha tenere 660. I really wanted adv bike. But some how I settled my self with choper: kawasaki vn 750. Life showed me again: people may make plans, god will still laugh! I started working in some camp where was some pretty high isolation. My desire for adv bike came again. Took dr800. By now I'm counting 3 years of experience. It took me some time to realise this:
      I'm already driving the bike of my dreams!
      Why?
      Well... I tried so many bikes, more comfort, more horsepower, and so on. Non of them made me want them.
      There is some thing in one cylinder engines. There is something when everything is moving. There is something in "old school" technology. I chose this bike by now and only can love it more and more.
      This kind of revelation i wish to everybody! To you to friend!
      Keep counting your miles and adventures!
      All the best!

    Great bit of kit, I love mine. it is largely stock because I thought if I needed to get parts when travelling I would have more chance with standard bike. Having said that your front end is all yamaha anyway so probably not a problem.
    I have lowered mine because I am only 5'9" and cannot plant both feet which I need to do when I travel with her ladyship.
    I also find stock brake pedal bends easily so fitted some puig crash bars at the bottom of the engine to help, but I think I will need to copy your modification.
    At just 22000 kms I suppose mine is just run in and your mileage gives me a lot of confidence.
    Forums all say engine is very strong.
    We both love the bike and hope to see a lot more of the world on it.
    Once again, great video. Thank you.

      Going on memory, I think the links dropped it 45mm. Measuring the clearance under the sump before and after gave the amount to drop the forks through the triple clamp.
      Side stand needed shortening too. Stood very upright after lowering.
      But well worth it for me.
      Rode so much better in cross winds,too.

      I've been to buy a tenere 660. But here in Portugal, it's a lot more expensive than the 650gs.
      Speed is very similar, the tenere at 110km / h goes at 4000rpm and my Gs at 100km / h goes at 4000rpm.
      Tenere I think being better off off road. But I chose Gs because it was cheaper. So far I'm very happy. But the Tenere is also very good

    Hey man, great video! But I have a small problem with mine Tenere that I saw in your video too ( if it is a problem, I dont know).
    After you start Tenere, the only indicators that lights up are for engine and coolant temperature. Do you know why only flashing theese two indicators instead of all of them? Sometimes does it, sometimes not on my Tenere. Thanks for the response!

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If these two lights pick up on the the dash while you ride, you have to stop. There are there to warn you not to work all the time. First, the red oil light, will show you that you don't have oil or the oil pump is not working. The second, orange light, will indicate for problems in the engine. I hope is clear now.

    Hi!
    You've made a very good video of the bike, I appreciate it.
    I'd like to ask what kind service you have done to the engine and in which kind of kilometer periods? And while you have travelled around the world with the bike, have you had any mechanical or electrical problems that stopped you somewhere in the middle of nowhere?
    I've got a XT660X myself and I like it a lot but it is quite a bit low for any harder terrain. I've been thinking to have a second bike for that kind of trips that require higher ground clearance and a 660Z could be one good option.

    • @motorcycleadventures

      I am a gentle rider. Yes, I do a lot of bad roads and off road as well, but I never twist the throttle more than I should. Always wait a couple of minutes when I start it and never go to the red line of the rpm's. The oil I change every 5,000 or 10,000km depends from the rides. Use only full synthetic 10W50 or 10W60. At the moment with Motorex 10W60. Never had a problem with the bike and now it has 130,000km. No problem on the road whatever. Last year, before I go to Mongolia I had a circuit on one of the main cables, that's it.

With all my gear, I couldn.t do nice trails through the Pyrennes because of that good, but very heavy machine. So, what's the result of a trip, if I can.t ride the ways I wanna ride??? An intelligent solution is demanded!!
    A 660 XTZ or a 690 KTM or anything else. Good bye BMW Adventure... with some tears, but looking forward ... it.s better to ride a lighter bike.

      I just finished building my 2017 KTM 690 Enduro R that ships in 2 weeks to the U.K. as the starting point for my 52 day tour through Europe and Morocco. I've addressed the weaknesses of the bike and will carry critical spares. Hopefully I'll be trouble free, but will expect different and I'm ready for dealing with them. Familiarizing yourself with your equipment is a necessity! I be found many riders have ridden the 690 thousands of trouble free miles!

      Bill I hope to hear some about your trip and the reliability of the KTM 690. I have heard mostly that it is a very reliable bike. There are of course known issues with the bike like any bike such as rocker arms and fuel pump but otherwise it seems like a great bike. Lightweight and tons of power. Looking foreward to a report

    • @billness2635
      @billness2635 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My 690 has been dead on reliable so far! Today is the last of 12 days in Morocco riding through the northern mountains, rocks, mud and Sahara desert dunes in heat, rain and blinding sand storms and thick fog! Brilliant! I had one big crash involving large stones and a tree that caused damage to my nav tower, left fuel tank and fairings, but the Moroccan people are good at straightening bent aluminium. Tomorrow I'm going back to Mejas Spain for a couple days to do some repairs and servicing before heading for the Pyrenees.

      Bill Ness. That is great to hear as the 690 or the Husky 701 seems to be my current dream bike. Lots of folks bash the 690s reliability so glad to hear you are having a great experience so far. If I may ask what parts did you bring along for back up if any??

    thanks for the review! I'm just know doing my drivers license and I am looking to buy an ADV bike as well. I was considering a Honda CB500X but some people told me to go for something bigger. So I am considering a used XT660Z as well. I'm 1.81m and about 100kg. Would you say, that a the Tenere would be an option and if so, what would be your main reason to go for is instead of the Honda? Great video. I have a question. Which major maintenance/repairs did the motorcycle required during these 100k km? I was looking to a used one and it has 45k km, however I have no idea of its maintenance past and care, so I was wondering what is something to look for on the XT660Z after it has been through few km.

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing major I think. If the oil is changed regularly the bike will survive more 50 thousands with no problem. Check the rear linkage for movement maybe. If so, change the bearing there.

    I own a wr450f and I totally love the power and aggressive handling but I'm worried about burning the engine on the highway, so I'm thinking on selling the harley and get a tenere660 for long trips, I'm just worried about the weight, doesn't it feel top heavy? in some conditions I can barely lift my wr450 specially over rocks and kinda upside down. Can you still do technical rock climbing enduro with the stock suspension?

      Moto très très très solide, en plus de 100 000km zéro panne, amortisseur arrière reconditionné à 80 000km, plaquettes avant font facilement plus de 60 000km mais moins de 20 000km à l arrière. Kit chaine 35 ou 40 000km si bien entretenu. Roulement de colonne de direction changés 2 fois ( à cause des roues arrière ?) et roulement de roue arrière 1 fois. Attention aux amortisseurs de couple ( caoutchouc dans le moyeux) qu'il faut changer assez souvent. Joint spy de fourche d'origine ne bougent pas meme avec une utilisation tout terrain. J'ai du changer la batterie au bout de 6 ans ( normal ). Un cable de gaz et d'embrayage qui commencaient à s'éffilocher et j'ai fait l'embrayage à 90 000km par précaution mais il n'en n'avait pas vraiment besoin. C'est à peu près tout !

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi, I was lucky to go without any breakdowns or mechanical problems. I did just the standard maintenance - oil change every 10,000km, 10-50 Synthetic (Castrol or Motul) valves adjust every 20,000km.... I changed the clutch before my Asia trip (60,000km) but wasn't necessary, I did it to be on the safe side. I am still with original battery. Change twice the rear wheel bearings, once the steering and twice the front wheel. I had 4 chain sets and about 3 cushdrives.
      I hope this will help!
