  • I wanted to show you guys how I got 3 phase power into my home shop using a phase converter panel off of ebay.

Nice vide, thanks for posting. Just bought one off ebay for my 10 horse motor. Built one myself, but could never get the voltage on the ghost leg right. 190 bucks, well worth it. Looking forward to getting it hooked up.

Thank you very much for your video. I super like the look of the box that you have so I just ordered a 7.5 hp kit from phase converter USA. I'm hoping to build it then put this project away. Thank you

You guys have well cheap stuff in USA. I'm in uk and I got 10hp rotary phase converter second hand for 850£ and this is half price of new one, I had to hunt for it good 4 months online. Lathe cost me 2k plus 600 delivery and its colchester triumph that needed lots of cleaning and parts replacing

I have their 3hp unit but no wiring diagram. I emailed the company but got no response. I assume L1 and L2 are inputs and the CAB terminals to to the ghost motor. Then do the t1 t2 and t3 terminals go to the machines you want to power?

I'm a little confused on how I should have the leads configured on my 9 wire 3 phase motor for use with this panel ?

Would you be able to tell me what is the dimension of the box? I have to locate one for the WNY kit I just ordered.

Just to get a general idea, if your disconnect is 50 amp, what is your main breaker rated to in amps? Or to ask it in a different way, what is your service entrance coming in off the utility pole?

What considerations do you need to make when running a compressor off of your pony motor.

Odered one 2 weeks ago for my 15hp motor. Haven't seen it yet.... it has a tracking # , shows its not in transit yet. And no reply from them as of yet..

I've been trying to get this unit working in New Zealand with no luck. NZ and Australian power supplies run on M.E.N which means, multiple earth neutral. I've been told that because our neutral wire is on the same bus bar as the earth in the breaker board, I'm essentially putting an earth wire into the centre of the pony motor. In the states you guys have two live wires and a neutral. Does anyone know much more about this problem and could offer some advice on a workaround?

No need to put the neutral earth to the common center of the wye connection motor, did you already try to connect your single phase directly to the L1 to L2, or L1 L3, or L2 L3, the remaining will be the capacitor connection, also, some motor has low and high voltage connection, ex. 220v and 380v. You still need to tap the correct setting. Now if you will be using higher hp motor , you need to put starting capacitor.

I tried it , 0 and 220 v, i did not put the 0 to the common of wye motor, i put the 0 on L1, 220v on L2, then capacitor on L2 and L3 of the motor. I use a 3 phase 220 /380v 30hp motor as pony, input single phase voltage is 220v so i set the motor to 220v, the motor connection is on delta, and its 30hp so it will be hard starting, motor is 9 wire, i tap it to make it wye on starting , delta on run , i use wye delta starter, i also put 5 pcs. 500 uf, as starting capacitor , normally closed timed relay 2 sec connected on contactor , total of balancing run capacitor is 500uf, 450v, 50uf x10.

Another option, put transformer , primary input your rated voltage 0 220v, the secondary will became L1 L2,

Please is there a way to provide 3 phase energy without the need for a motor ...I wanted to compensate third effect with the help of a capacitor

+emmanuel dadzie dadzie My 3hp 3 phase lathe is running on a converter without the idler motor. It has two start caps and a relay. Runs fine. Motor is rated 7.4 amps and it is running at 7.1 amps. It will run all day just fine.
I'll see if I can get back behind the lathe and write a schematic on it.

dude, i make this one for my homework with two method (one capasitor and three capasitor) not too much different. your phase converter better than mine. just 1 questions, if you mind. wich one voltage your phase converter change ? 220V to 380V / 220V to 380V ? or else. one more thing, in indonesia, so hard to find anyguys who make phase converter, you can sell it here with a good price cause your mine is good stuff. sorry for bad english.

If for 3 phase motor use, i suggest using variable frequency drive... China made vfd are not expensive and can be ordered at lazada. The input voltage is single phase, the output is three phase.. many voltage output to choose. Its cheaper, low power consumption and it runs on frequency better than relying on voltage.. the rotary phase converter will use higher hp than load motor, will double the power consumption.

Just wondering.. if the rated horse power for pony motor at least higher than the load motor.. then i assumed that the power consumption will double.. example i has 5 hp load motor , pony will be at least 7 hp,... I will be paying an excess 7 hp ... I think its better to convert the winding into single phase.. or install a china made variable frequency drive input single phase output three phase... 5 hp is 100usd on lazada...

5 hp single phase to three phase vfd will cost only 100 usd on lazada,

    • @GlassAnvil

That’s one way to do it. I don’t care about the power cost because.. really who cares. The machines run so little in my home shop that it doesn’t matter to me. Plus a 5hp 3 phase motor can’t simply be replaced with a 5hp single phase motor the power factor is different and most likely the rpms... also I have many 3 phase machines it will cost a fortune to convert them... and things that are direct drive like my disc belt sander and grinder simply can’t be changed.. another option is a VFD same deal.. quite spendy and can only run one machine.

@@GlassAnvil yes, thats the misery of no reasonable options but to use a rotary phase converter which cheaper than to purchase a three phase to single phase inverter . Good vfd is also expensive and higher hp capacity is more expensive,
