I didn't do most of these things, but what I thought made the best impact was the $1k that I spent on a professional landscaper. I had lived in the house for almost 40 years and loved planting new things regularly. But when I asked a landscaper, he recommended removing almost everything but the nicest flowering bushes - then mulched everything. I wished I had done it years ago. It looked so clean and neat - and would have been so much easier to keep tidy!
I did that many years ago while watching all the HGTV show about selling your house. All neutral walls and white trim. I figured I may as well enjoy the clean, updated look while I lived here. Now that we’re seriously thinking of selling I need to do some tweaking and refreshing! It just never ends.
When we sold our house a few years ago, we did ALL of these things to be able to sell. The popular colors and finishes may not be the same as those in this video 10 years from now, but the rest of the advice is excellent. First time on the market, our house didn’t sell. So paint, hardware, faucets, lighting. Our goal was to get rid of all of the shiny yellow brass and erase the 90’s look of the house. After all these changes (while still in a buyer-driven market), the house sold in 2 weeks. This lady knows what she’s talking about, so take her advice.
I’m painting the interior of our home, including the ceilings, closets, and all woodwork (including the doors). In other words, if it’s not moving, it’s getting painted.😅 After 11 years of living here, I finally swapped out all of the door knobs so that they all match. Why didn’t I do this 11 years ago???
@@account2292 the OP is right. Any brick requires special paint to let it breathe. You can’t just slap regular wall or exterior paint on it. There are special brick paints available, but it’s not generally recommended.
You should have done a lot of that long ago so YOU CAN ENJOY IT! When my mom passes, we’re not doing anything to her house because if we do anything, they’re gonna tear it out and do their own style. It would just be a total waste of money and more crap to go into the landfill. It’s got good bones great location, all brick Built better than 99% of the house nowadays it just needs to be updated. But it’s been very very well taken care of. Now, if we were going to keep it sure we would update it to our style, but we’re not.
Problem is, a lot of people have no imagination and can’t see past the current finishes. Some people may put their own stamp, but most buyers won’t change much after they buy it. You’re basically limiting your market to those who are looking to improve the place, but they want to buy it at a deep discount to pay for it. It’s cheaper to buy some hardware and paint and broaden your market!
I literally walk by the “6312 house” (at 2:44) every day with my dog, and I’m always impressed by the fresh, clean, modern exterior color combinations! It looks fantastic in the late afternoon sun. Your video has really inspired me as I think about repainting my own house recently. Any color recommendations?
Did our house exterior in Downing Slate with Bolero red doors, white trim. I believe B. Moore. It’s gorgeous. It’s a bit darker than this, but it’s one of those colors I never get tired of.
We are looking for a smaller house to retire to closer to family. I agree with you. When I see some of these 'cheap' diys I run. I have discovered in the past, they are just cosmetically covering up deeper problems that will lift its pricey head a few years down the road.
@mellocello187 classic is always classic and never dated and never a trend. It is timeless but to use it or not in your home is totally individual choice

We upgraded using a color palette from a placemat. Dark and light Blues, Aqua green, Nutmeg tan/brown and white. Always paint the ceiling to match the walls. White ceilings look cheap and make the buyer think "Where else did the seller cut corners?"
I agree about ceilings not being white -- looks like you taped a sheet to it. BUT ... popcorn ceilings look much better in a white color. Only smooth plaster ceilings look stylish when painted a non-white color that's chosen with care. Non-white ceilings are more common in English and European homes than in USA.
I agree the go to white ceilings ! Why? The same colour especially if a lighter shade, or A paler shade of the same wall colour or a light blue like the sky. Also I use a gloss paint on the ceilings so the lights glow.

I will do all these improvements while I live there, so I can enjoy them.

If you want to give the cabinets the best treatment, let a professionel auto painter give them a new color. It can give a more exclusive look
Gosh, I absolutely HATE little shelves on the wall. They look tacky.
Yes, it's not actual storage but more an invitation to acquire more clutter and display it.
Thank you for this informative video. I’m looking forward to watching more from you.
Whatever you do, do not paint exterior brick!! The house needs to breathe. Painted brick invites mold mildew.
Haaaaa. Ridiculous

You can paint it just need brick paint
Plus turning something that takes so little work into a pita.

Avoid Trends like black faucets & hardwear . Stay classic Timeless.
For the bar black faucet is fine but with the rest I agree. Classic will never go wrong

Everyone that has black faucets. Ask about hard water stains. Lol. They hate them.
