As experienced as you are with so many plants/flowers and an expert with amaryllis, I like that you are still experimenting and learning. Your love of gardening is infectious and is expanding my world with joy and trying new things. Thank you Danielle-I think your grandmother would be proud and even amazed!

I have grown Allium karataviense in my garden, from a large bulb, and mine was very stout, with attractive leaves that did not start dormancy prior to blooming, about 5-6 inches tall, very tight full sphere with more florets per sphere than any other allium I have grown, like Gladiator. Hence it produced a very solid giant 5 inch sphere of deep red-purple color. Any form of shade can be detrimental to allium flowering and winter south window is considered part shade for northern climates (like PA). Which is why I have a grow light above all plants next to the south window. Some gardeners measure the footcandle value using phone apps to see how much light a plant maybe getting. Your south window in feb/march may not be sufficient. Minimum of 6hrs full bright sunlight required for flowering bulbs.
I also read in several places that alliums do not need a cold period, just a dormancy period. I imagine it might depend on where the allium originated. This cultivar being native to the Karatau Mountains in Kazakhstan.

I'm really happy to see you experimenting with alliums. I planted schubertii alliums in my garden last fall, and have no experience with them. I'm glad you said the leaves die as they bloom, or I would have thought my plants were diseased and probably would have pulled them all up. You are such a wonderful teacher. Thank you!!

Those Schubertii allium look amazing in the photos. I’m trying them for the first time, too. I hope yours come up well!

Hi Danielle, you never cease to amaze me!! I never would have thought to force allium bulbs indoors, what a great idea! I also like your idea of forcing the allium bulbs in individual pots, you could plant up an arrangement using the strongest ones in the center of that bowl, plant some muscari around the allium bulbs and add some alyssum violet queen around the edge of the pot. Add some curly willow branches for a woodland look and maybe a little Spanish moss poking out here and there. Thanks for sharing your forced allium bulb experience with us. 😍

Compared to my experience forcing Schubertii alliums, you killed it! I chilled for 14 weeks and only did 3 bulbs. This was in 2019. All three put some weak foliage and then fizzled out. Replanting outside led to flowers next year. Thank you for showing how great alliums can look indoors with intense light, long chill, and above average luck.

I’d plant some simple grass seed because it grows fast and can fill in the empty spaces. I like to experiment too. Thanks for sharing your tricks.

U are so knowledgeable of & that is so very awesome. I've have always wanted to try allium but never have. I live in Cal. So I would definitely need to frig. them for 16 weeks. But for me I have a small frig. I love apples, so it would be hard with keeping bulbs from apples. But I'll do it. Thanks for your knowledge. Sharon J.

How interesting! I have been trying to force different spring bulbs but never alliums. I tried forcing daffodils & I must have not had them in basement long enough as they never got roots. I keep trying new things regarding forcing different bulbs to see what works. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thanks for the advice about the leaves , i was going to trim them now but guess the plant will die off .need some better ground cover as they swamp the small lavender infront of them in my garden .better planning on my part needed 😌 😂

Verry nice.....;love the container! Aren't Alliums heavy feeders? did you need to fertilize? What will you do when they die back? What I mean is how do you store the summer and fall? Thanks Lots of questions.

I thought of these ideas even though I haven’t forced alliums before. After potting up, place them in an un-insulated enclosure like a detached garage. That might more accurately mimic their natural sprouting behavior in the ground. And I would also use a grow light until they have some size and the bloom stalk is well on its way. 🤔 Then once they are about to open gradually bring them inside - the reverse of hardening off?

I did another experiment with alliums from seed. My first batch was seeds I got from Ukraine in September when I was working there. I put the seeds in my fridge as soon as I got back and planted them in pots and back in the fridge in January. February I put them under grow light and I think every seed germinated!
The next seeds I picked up there in February, they had been outside the whole time, sow seeds in pots, put them in refrigerator for about two weeks and then under grow light. Not one single seed germinated. 😢

Not by choice but because they came too late in the season to plant them and I wanted to save them I put them in a pot figuring to move them outside this spring . Well they came up and are not blooming yet but I see signs that they will. I put them out in an unheated porch and they seem to be doing fine. We will see. 🌷💚🙃

I watched your video on seed starting, it was very helpful. How often do you water them? Also, what causes the yellowing of some of the leaves on my spinach etc? Thank you for any help you might give.
