Some facts for you about that bike: it accelerates quicker to 120 mph compared to the RR (then the RR catches up flies ahead). As an S1000XR rider, this bike is designed for the older guy (avg. age of owner of this bike is mid-50s) who wants the comfortable upright position, but loves the super bike power from the days before back problems and peeing five time a night. Does well on long distance trips and is an absolute thrill in the twisties.

As you i prefer the road mode for the suspension. And please, find som twisties and really have some fun on it :)
I was lucky enough to ride a 2019 version of them, I agree, it definitely make you too comfortable and push on a bit. They're an incredible bike - but I agree, as a touring bike I still think the likes of the 1290 super adventure is a much more attractive option. THAT SAID!! For a giant human like myself the S1000rr isn't an option as I'm too large, so I'd 100% go for the S100XR if I wanted it.
I started this video, about 30 secs in: If ma boi disses this bike in any way other than maybe the handlebar vibrations (ez fix btw) I'm gonna lose it. This bike is literally best in class and an all around PERFECT motorbike. I mean just as a first example listen to that STOCK exhaust sound. Literally don't need an exhaust on that thing. Also you should've tried Dynamic Pro, its another step up from Dynamic that opens up the exhaust valve completely. 11:07, careful, this bike has lowered versions from factory, you may have been on one. Cos normal seat, normal suspension this bike is very tall. If people want a slow tourer, they get the GS, There is a reason this is one of the most sold models in BMW's lineup. OC: This is a bike for people who are 25 but their mental age is 45
yeah is definitely on the lowered version. im 5'11 and couldn't flat foot the normal height XR but I could easily flat foot the lowered version. II think chase is a similar height too
Chase, I would characterize the S1000XR and the Multistrada as sport-tourers. While you could take them on some gravel roads, they really aren’t designed to go offroad, unlike a BMW GS. That being said, these types of sport tourers are my favorite bikes for daily riding and are way too much fun!
Coming from Triumphs (Sp3) and getting older, I wanted fast-but-comfortable plus the ability to have hard bags. Stumbled across the XR at the local Triumph-BMW combo dealer -- haven't looked back. The build quality and sound aren't as awesome as the Triumphs, but the performance is amazing. Fun to surprise the supersport riders, too, when you can easily keep up with and even pass them.
I am 42 and I am not sure for super bike motor anymore, that’s why if you 42 but you feel still like 30. You need to buy it. Actually, I am the fan of s1000xr. Sound is cool, riding is smooth.
2016 BMW R 1200 RS owner here. Going back to the old flying brick/transverse I-4 K100 RS (Reise Sport - literally sport touring in English) there’s a tradition of I-4 power plants in sporting bikes with a touring function. BMW created the first sport touring motorcycle with the R 100 RS (boxer powered, like my bike). This blend of sport with function is just something that BMW does. For us, “It is the way.” The S 1000 XR, is a cross (X) of sporting performance (S 1000) with touring, or Reisen. Thus, XR. If it seems like an odd pairing, consider that Germans like to take their R 1200 GS bikes to the track, lol. They demand a lot of their machines. It was only a matter of time before BMW tried this with their S 1000 motor. That, and the Multistrada had the sports adventure touring market all to itself for a while. The result is this long-legged touring bike on meth.
I like to do long trips and like a sport-tourer or tourer for that purpose. I also like something lighter and more nimble for rides closer to home. I have a Kawasaki Concours as my sport-tourer and a BMW S1000R as my around town bike. I really dislike not having any wind protection or luggage on the S1kR and have considered selling both bikes and buying S1kXR to use for everything. I test rode it at a recent BMW demo day, however, and it's not the best bike for long rides. It's windy and noisy for me at highway speeds with the stock windscreen (I'm 6'3") and the bike is high strung (i.e., not relaxing). Also, it has a chain drive which is not as good as a shaft drive when you cover a bunch of miles on a trip. I rode the K1600GTL which is amazing but it's very big and heavy. I concluded there is no one motorcycle that does everything well. PS - the current S1kXR gets pricy if you buy it with panniers and there are many great bikes at that price point and below.
People who want to ride a supersport but cant of issues, this could be a great bike. For me I dont want an very active seating position with back and wrist pains.
CHASEEEEEEEEEE, i got out of motovlogging/motorcycles for a year or 2 becuase im not old enough to ride yet, I used to love your videos and now I found your channel again
Ftp I got a grom when I was 13 and an r6 when I was 15 now I’m on my 5th bike I have a tracer 900 yami. As long as you look somewhat like a teenager they won’t pull you over.
OC chase I’m riding the k1600 Grand American and as the bmw salesman said to me is dynamic mode for is to stiffen everything up to make it more responsive in a cornering sense and road is for you long distance ride or highway riding. The wheel on the handle bar is called the multimedia wheel for the menus on the bike and controls the radio if the bike has a stereo system
The weird spinny thing on the left is the control for the GPS system you can buy for the bike, which legit is worth it's weight on gold (which I think is an accurate portrayal of its cost). It's a brilliant GPS on its own, but it also shows a bunch of bike specific information, e.g. service intervals, fuel range, outside temp, bike temp, battery life, GPS destination in KM/Miles, Time to destination, etc. Really wicked unit, great for plotting long rides and if you want you can tell the gps to take you the route with the most curves, which is really great for plotting group rides. Just type your destination, select in options "preffer curves" and it will take you on the best bike routes to your desti.
Ok now I’ve fully watched the video... You got every key aspect of this bike.... Killer review!! With the “quick” shifter... it’s technically not a quick shifter. They called shift assist so it’s not notchy, but sorta mushy. But either way I’m glad you enjoyed the hell out of it I knew you would!
22:55 Honestly not a ton on that generation of bikes, it adjusts a couple things in settings and if you have a BMW Navigator you can control the GPS with it. On the 2020 S1000XR (and any model with TFT screens) it is basically the mouse for the bike.
I just rolled 6000 miles on my 2016 S1000XR last weekend. I bought it two years ago with 1200 miles on it. I came from a 2009 Monster 696. I wanted something sporty that would eat up miles..and this sure does it (not much adventure with this bike..I have taken it down some gravel roads..not a good idea). All day comfort but this bike is known to have a vibration around the 5-6K rev range (lots of youtube vids on it). Some days it bothers me, most days it doesn't. I'm 5'8 with a 32 inch inseam and find this bike pretty tall for me. Maybe that bike had the lower seat? I tried the lower Sargent seat but found it had pressure points that I could not deal with. So I'm back to the stock seat. Lower speed manuvering, when stopped, I feel the bike is front/top heavy. But I've def gotten used to it for the most part. I love the quick shifter and the sound this engine makes at higher revs. Love the heated grips, living near Albany NY I use them all the time. I somewhat agree with your comment on the mode button placement, I however wish the heated grip button was easier to reach. Road mode seems bouncing to me, mostly use Dynamic for the "spirited ride experience" If you aren't familiar with Cuban Rider check out his S1000XR vids on TH-cam. Great content! I would be interested to know why/what the person traded in the XR to buy? Any clue? Thanks for the content! You have renewed my love for the XR again! (been looking at the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled..for more adventure type riding)
So you are 5'8 with a 32 inseam? I'm 6 with a 32 inseam. Either u have long legs or mine are stubs. Thinking of buying one but haven't ridden it yet. I have to be able to flat foot. Also scared about the buzzing motor at certain R's
@@maxxbenzz7842 32x32! I dont have the XR anymore. I traded it in for a K1600B. totally different ride! Flat footed now! Try one of the newer iterations of S1000XR (2020+) and you probably wont find the handlebar buzz. I test road the newer style and it was like riding a ghost. Best why I can describe it.
The circle is for use of GPS which is to expensive and nobody uses. I had this on the RT and GS. It is really very irritating rotater when you want to use the other bottoms with wintergloves. I have a 2016 tuned xr which has 178hp at the end wheel. It rocks!
oc: Well BMW has GS line for ADV. So why would they build another adventurer? I think about this bike more like performance machine with comfort included. Imagine some older guy after mid life crisis who wants power but is too afraid his back and bones will hurt from supersport. Well here you are :-)
This is an upright super sport bike. No idea why it is being driven in an urban setting, let alone test driven. Take this thing out to the tight twisted hill back country with a set of super sticky track tires, put it in Dynamic Pro mode, road setting on the suspension, let the clutch out & never touch it again. Twist the throttle with purpose & be ready to have the best ride you ever had ever. This bike can go, stop, & turn better than most super sports under 150 MPH. It redlines about 80 in 1st. The RR redlines at 108. The tight gear package make the power delivery almost violent above 5k which it has no business ever dropping below. I had to get mine dyno tuned ECU Flaahed, to smooth out the power delivery & unredtricted, but it's by far the most fun & capable bike I have ever ridden off track. They screwed the bike up in 2020 by stretching 4-6 gears out for the fools who want to tour on this thing. It becomes 50% less bike on touring tires. If you want to ride on touring tires, this is way too much bike for you. This is 100% a super sport upright. She rips better than just about anything out there off track. If you know how to ride, you will pick off crotch rockets all day long on the tracks too.
I would have to agree with you. I had the 2018 version of the XR and now I have the S1000RR. Well.... I am selling the RR for another XR. Today I test rode the 2021 M model XR which is beautiful however it doesn't seem as "angry" in the first three gears as my 2018 was. So, I'm not sure what to do. I like the look on the second Gen but I love the engine of the first Gen. Decisions decisions...
The round switch on the left is to operate de gps, and it actually is very usefull. I understand your opinion but u got to think that bmw offers de gs line witch is more of a tourer type bike ( witch I bealive u will love). This is a very sporty bike witch will destroy miles and corners!
This is an easy bike to understand. 160 hp in a comfortable bike, that still handles great. How many hours does anybody really want to be hunched over on a crotch rocket?
Good lengthy review.. I'm after one of these to replace my Honda VFR800X, which I use as a commuter mile-muncher. I think it's epic that they've used the same engine as the S1000RR, just tuned the mid range for more grunt, suited for roads / country roads. Overtaking would be a breeze! As for the screen, I'd add the short addition fly screen on top of it (I'm 6'5") to gain some more protection, it's what I added to the Honda and it works perfectly. I often ride a BMW R1250RT for Bloodbikes here in the UK, and I've found the Dynamic suspension setting much more rewarding than the Road mode, it tends to wallow somewhat in Road mode (all controlled from that scroll on the left which you've no doubt learnt about already). It's definitely a sports touring machine (as the Honda above is), but at the upper end with its performance. I like the option is has, the tame Road mode, or switch up to Dynamic for a more spirited ride...
I personally would rather have a bit more midrange than all topend power especially on a touring bike not only for more usable power when passing on the highway but fuel efficiency too
OC: Welcome to the BMW "dark side" (we'll get more cookies). The S1000XR lures the older youth off the sport bikes and shows them where touring is. I haven't ridden an S1000 anything, but for a daily driver/occasional track day the XR looks to be a nice fit. For reference, my daily driver is a R1200RT. In my younger days I would have gone S1000XR over the RT, but I could still see myself getting into some hooligan mischief every now and then on the XR even today.
OC...Absolutely that's what I want from a sports tourer. I could get off the chanel ferry and be straight into the European Alpine twisties. The only thing I don't like about this bike, and any of the S1000 platforms, are those vibes. I don't think I could live with those
I own this bike and I have nothing but nice words for it, however, low seating is not one of em, I think the bike you tested probably had the manufacturer option low sit or even lowered suspesion, cause I got the standard one (Europe) and I was tippy toeing all day, and I'm 5 ft 8". Also, Dynamic suspension is not automatically adjusted (the new one 2020 does it). Tt's just the hard setting, and you should use road for highway, and then dynamic for twisties.
More of a sport tourer and not an adventure bike. It's in the vane of a Tracer 900, which, since you got a hookup there with Yamaha, that would be a great bike to compare to this. Some notes with the BMW way of naming their suspension settings; "Dynamic" doesn't change to adjust to the road, like you'd think or hope. They changed the way they name it, but it used to just be 'Sport', 'Normal' or 'Comfort'. Dynamic is the equivalent of the old "sport". The circle boy is the BMW "wonder wheel". On that bike, it's more used to cycle through the option on the BMW nav, which is a rebranded Garmin unit. On other bikes like the K1600 (which I have) or something else with a TFT dash, it cycles through all the menus. Also let's you change radio stations, raise volume, etc. Like many design features on any BMW car or motorcycle I've owned, it leaves you scratching your head, wondering if there was a better way to design it, but then at some point, the reason it works the way it does becomes evident and you realize that those Germans may be onto something lol
You should ride in the mountains with a speed of 80 miles plus in the twistiest and Add the fantastic motor sound accelerat from 7000 up. That would be a interesting vid.
OC - I’ve got to ride an XR. To me the appeal would be going cross country to find the great roads and when you get to them, being able to enjoy them fully. You can enjoy roads without being on a race bike of course but anyway, i think that’s the idea behind it. Chase you rode a Multistrada Pikes Peak version a while ago. That’s the XR competitor along with... I really want to try a 2020 KTM Super Duke 1290 GT.
Best review I've seen. I've just bought a 2018 model and pick it up this Sunday. Im slightly nervous about the hight of this bike. Im going to get it lowerd....but will this effect the suspension options ??
OC: Touring I think it would be find to have that kind of power and everything, but if it is even hinting at being an adventure bike, then it needs way more low down power and torque to get you through off road conditions.
OC: I Imagine the bike is for that older super sport rider that wants the performance of a liter bike, but can be more comfortable and ride longer. The wiz wheel controls your menu. I’m all for having super sport performance in a touring platform, but I wish that bmw would have classified this bike as a sport touring model.
@@stoftof1 Not older like a retiree age, more like late 20’s and up, where you get to that point where you love the performance, but need something more comfortable.
@@airtylerb There are cheaper options though... Versys 1000, FJ09, I considered Tiger800/900, which is a really smooth bike... but they have a big issue, the passenger footpegs are welded to the frame, so if your bike drops and the passenger footpegs are tear up from the frame, the bike is wrecked... Then @chaseontwowheels can get a new type of motorcycle for a new season ;)
Yeah way to sell a bike to someone, "this bike really shines when you take it on a highway, that is where it likes to be the best" Like anyone buying a motorcycle is mainly wanting to ride on the highway , the most boring bit of any motorcycle ride. I only ride highway to get to the better roads. Town and highways is the most boring roads so I try to ride them as little as possible. I miss the clips where Chase take his bikes to the montain. Like the old Speed triple R video Chase did in the mountain when Smo was visiting from the UK. That is one of Chases better first rides of all time when we got to se the motorcycle on motorcycle roads and not just boring straight urban concrete. That video and Smo's review of that bike actually made me go buy the 2018 Speed triple RS 1050, really good first ride video. These in town and highway videos that 99% of the first rides are, tells very little how the bike feels to ride on roads that you want to ride your bike. I hope Chase will start with quality videos over quantity again. More bikes on fun roads like up in the mountains. Those roads are where I want to ride my new bike.
I always think that when it comes to adv bike, the Triumph Tiger is the best especially the latest 900 however it's not a fair comparison with the XR since its and adv sport. I think the Tiger Sport is within the same segment as the XR. But if you're looking for a bike that offers fun at twisties and long distance riding, the H2SX is amazing however the ground clearance isn't that great.
I’m in no way a BMW guy but the amount of times I grind my teeth hearing adv bike and not sport touring. As if the GSA bikes don’t exist. It wouldn’t be my choice of a sport touring bike, but the capability of this bike on a twisty road is very alluring. These things will make the fast boys cry
Sporttouring bikes should fix both, agressive and calm riding. Thats why I like KTM Superduke GT , 1290 Vtwin engine and you can take it easy on it or ride it hard.
Don't think of it as a "touring" motorcycle. Think of it as a comfortable sport bike that you can tour on. Check out Cuban Rider on youtube for an idea of what it can do on the track
OC: The S1000 XR is probably more comparable to another high end sport touring bike like a Ninja H2 SX than the Multistrada. BMW's marketing is somewhat confusing as they will refer to the S1000 XR as a "Sport Adventure". It lacks the protection (skid plate, etc) and performance/power delivery dynamics of an ADV, which is why they have the GS line. If someone handed me the keys to one I'm pretty sure I wouldn't turn it down. The price puts it way outside of anything I would consider unless I was going to ride over 200 days out of the year and had luggage for going on multi-day trips. @chaseontwowheels - How do you think it compares to your MT-10 set up as a touring bike? That is actually a pretty good side by side, and I think the MT with all the additions still comes in way under the cost of a new BMW.
European journalists wrote that BMW engineers made a mistake in the design of this Gen 1 motorcycle, which they corrected in Gen 2, making it calmer. I say that for those who could pay and get Gen 1 they are very lucky people I wish I could buy it too because it is an upright Superbike
17:45 I don't know bro, if you're not bouncing it off the rev limiter, are you really riding? I have to ride 100 + miles to get to the twisties, and when I get there, I want to tear them up. This is the bike for me, for sure. Been out of the moto game for a minute, but this bike is calling my name. Great content Chase, just like I remember. Great job! 👍

OC: if you think the XR has an identity crisis, wait til you ride that Multistrada :D I think it's pretty cool of BMW to put a crotch rocket in a saddlebag frame
@@chaseontwowheels OK so this is hilarious... Cause I literally just put a deposit on the Tenere yesterday. I have a 2016 S1000XR at the moment.. It is gonna be sold once I take shipment of that Tenere! Bahahaha 🤣🤣If i get this Tenere and im in GA ill have to send you a message!
Definitely, I have this HP color XR from 2018. That version has probably the OEM shorter suspension kit for shorter riders. The standard XR is not for short riders, I'am 186cm and I sometimes still tippy toes. Unfortunatelly the BMW OEM lower set suspension kit decrease dramatically the XR's awsome cornering capability. Otherhand the best bike I ever had.
@@promailpro3387 I thought so. I researched these bikes pretty heavily when I was shopping this year. I really wanted one, but couldn’t justify the cost. They’re outstanding machines 😎
From what I can tell, the camera car footage is filmed on a different ride as his gopro footage/audio, they then edit both videos into one while using the audio from the gopro footage. Which is why you can never see the camera car in his gopro footage.
The camera car is a grey Jeep Grand Cherokee (If I remember correctly). You can see it some some of his other videos such as the WBRG shakedown runs on the Ducati. You won't see it from the helmet cam views since the videos are recorded separately then stitched together with the audio dubbed afterwards. There are times where the bike will suddenly seem to be in a different lane when the view switches or vehicles nearby will be different. I honestly think they do a great job with the quality of filming and post production on these videos to make them as seamless as possible while filming in a real world situation where they do not have full control over the environment.

OC I would say that kind of power delivery should be in a bike like that
People who want to ride a supersport but cant of issues, this could be a great bike. For me I dont want an very active seating position with back and wrist pains.
I sold my RR for this bike and it's great.
Chase, u should test drive classic retro bikes like the Royal enfield continental gt 650.

Those bikes are junk

Bro! I bought this same bike 2 years ago. I’ve thought about getting you to come out and test ride it! Glad it finally happened!!!!
Also circle boy is for navigation!
Looking at the front forks it looks like a factory lowered version I'm 5' 10 and can't flat foot mine, great editing and video dude, stay safe 👊
Yea was gonna say no way he's flat footing the regular height one. I'm 5'8 and couldn't even tip toe it.
22:55 Honestly not a ton on that generation of bikes, it adjusts a couple things in settings and if you have a BMW Navigator you can control the GPS with it. On the 2020 S1000XR (and any model with TFT screens) it is basically the mouse for the bike.
The weight in the steering is from the steering damper... it should be adjustable on that model.
Answer to your last question, I personally would prefer sports bike performance in a comfortable package, love the channel 👍🏼
On the roads you are driving a scooter would be a better choice. This bike is made for going fast🥳
Road mode seems bouncing to me, mostly use Dynamic for the "spirited ride experience"
If you aren't familiar with Cuban Rider check out his S1000XR vids on TH-cam.
@@AdiposePhin ok thanks. I'm on a budget so that will be out of my price range. Have to stick with something 3 to 5 years old. Thanks!
Well here you are :-)
This one is more like a sport tourer.
Yes, but BMW lists it under their adventure category.
@@jonasv19 Well the advanture is a nice sticker from marketing to better sell bikes. But in reality it is sport tourer that will never go offroad.
Traded my Multi 1260S in on the new 2020 S1000XR. Night and day better. And I am a ducati guy :-) (my track bike is a V4S)
I’m considering both of these bikes…why do you like the XR more ?
Dude… great review, one of best i see on youtube for this bike. I just sold my bmw k1300s, and I plan to buy this bike.
It's a good looking bike. I like that front end than the current S1000RR
Awesome review! Now you just need to get your hands on a Yamaha Tracer 900gt to compare.
I personally would rather have a bit more midrange than all topend power especially on a touring bike not only for more usable power when passing on the highway but fuel efficiency too
Thank You Almighty God for showing me that I will buy one for myself
I don't think I could live with those
I own a XR and its a comfortable super sport.
Brilliant allrounder, I have one!
Man im glad i found this channel again after 4 years of not being able to find it damn Dope Videos Man
OC: I Imagine the bike is for that older super sport rider that wants the performance of a liter bike, but can be more comfortable and ride longer. The wiz wheel controls your menu. I’m all for having super sport performance in a touring platform, but I wish that bmw would have classified this bike as a sport touring model.
At 35, I don't consider myself an older rider, and I really want that bike!
@@stoftof1 Not older like a retiree age, more like late 20’s and up, where you get to that point where you love the performance, but need something more comfortable.
@@airtylerb I always in need for something comfortable... being 6'4/200ish lbs...
@@stoftof1 I’m in the same boat, I’m 25 6’3/230 lbs, and this bike is in the top considerations of bikes for me to pick up.
What an excellent analysis. Experience comes through in waves. Oustanding.
This bike is an absolute animal
I always think that when it comes to adv bike, the Triumph Tiger is the best especially the latest 900 however it's not a fair comparison with the XR since its and adv sport. I think the Tiger Sport is within the same segment as the XR. But if you're looking for a bike that offers fun at twisties and long distance riding, the H2SX is amazing however the ground clearance isn't that great.
Dynamic pro mode is where the power is best!
Ik that makes bmw makes great bikes, but why are people saying it sucks it’s not good, don’t get them, they are junk or shit, when it’s a quality bike
OC: Yes, if I was to invest that money in a bike I'd want it to be as close to an all rounder as possible
This bike definitely is, you can't go by a first ride video by a person who has no real idea of the bike they are riding.
Don't think of it as a "touring" motorcycle. Think of it as a comfortable sport bike that you can tour on. Check out Cuban Rider on youtube for an idea of what it can do on the track
Got my first speeding ticket on a s1000xr lol . Cop clocked me at 120mph .
They have redesigned the bike and it’s full lcd display now
OC: The S1000 XR is probably more comparable to another high end sport touring bike like a Ninja H2 SX than the Multistrada.
I say that for those who could pay and get Gen 1 they are very lucky people
I wish I could buy it too because it is an upright Superbike
You are exactly right. I sold my RR for this bike and I can't notice much if any difference in power.
Great job! 👍

Welcome back

I’m confused which car is the camera car 😂?
Me to bud
From what I can tell, the camera car footage is filmed on a different ride as his gopro footage/audio, they then edit both videos into one while using the audio from the gopro footage. Which is why you can never see the camera car in his gopro footage.
@@89ajad yep
The camera car is a grey Jeep Grand Cherokee (If I remember correctly). You can see it some some of his other videos such as the WBRG shakedown runs on the Ducati. You won't see it from the helmet cam views since the videos are recorded separately then stitched together with the audio dubbed afterwards. There are times where the bike will suddenly seem to be in a different lane when the view switches or vehicles nearby will be different. I honestly think they do a great job with the quality of filming and post production on these videos to make them as seamless as possible while filming in a real world situation where they do not have full control over the environment.
Hope you gonna test r-ninet as well!
