This was SO good, thanks, Chris and Demetra! I wanted to let you and the audience know that there’s a hidden facet to the origin of Barbie that adds an even deeper dimension to the parallels between Barbie and Inanna. According to M.G. Lord’s authorized biography on Barbie, Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie (played by Rhea Perlman in the film), had for years been trying to get the male designers at Mattel to make an adult doll styled after the paper dolls her daughter played with. Then she came across exactly what she was looking for on vacation in Switzerland.
"Lilli" was a German doll based on a character in a cartoon created by a man to tell "sordid, sensational stories" in keeping with the newspaper the cartoon was published in, Bild Zeitung. The character of Lilli was "a golddigger, exhibitionist, and floozy, she had the body of a Vargas Girl, the brains of Pia Zadora, and the morals of Xaviera Hollander”. (pg 25)
The doll was intended "as a pornographic caricature, a gag gift for men, or even more curious, for men to give to their girlfriends in lieu of, say, flowers”. This hidden origin story for Barbie pulls on the thread of overt sexuality and subsequent disgust that Barbie inspires in so many and which any discussion of the doll (and Venus!!) must include. Children may be oblivious to the doll's sexual overtones, but adults obviously are not. Barbie is almost a carbon copy of Lilli, it’s worth googling for images of the two dolls to see it for yourself.
For our purposes, this hidden origin story even speaks to the myth of Venus, because Barbie has an older sister who is an underworld figure and has been completely outshone by her younger sister, just like Inanna’s sister, Ereshkigal.
But it gets better! M.G. Lord provides the date the Lilli doll was launched: August 12th, 1955, three weeks before Venus conjoined the Sun in Virgo by superior conjunction on the 1st of September. The chart for that date shows the Sun at 18 Leo and Venus at 13, just one degree away from where it stations at the end of this month.
Clearly the story of Barbie the doll, if not Barbie the movie, includes the entire cycle of Venus. I’m going to argue it even lends weight to the idea that the exterior conjunction is just as likely a start of the cycle as the interior. Or, perhaps more accurately, that there can truly be no beginning, they are each the top and tail of the other, one leading to the next like a serpent eating its tail.
Thanks again for such a great conversation. I never would have imagined that so many of my favorite things, Demetra, Venus, AND Barbie, would appear at the same time!!!

I listened to the podcast and now I'm watching it thorugh for the visual aids and to really understand the stages of Inanna's journey. I am two days older than Sinead O'Connor and our almost identical chart (and eerily similar interpersonal life events) have been very much on my mind lately. We both were born in the 0 stage of Venus cycle at the end of the superior conjunction in Sagittarius. I can't help thinking that starting this Venus Retrograde must have felt unbearable for Sinead. If Barbie represents the evening star's love and beauty, then Sinead represents the morning star's righteous anger, dedication to justice, and so much more.

Always love hearing from Demetra George. Also, can't help but think of the old saying "People don't have ideas, ideas have people" when speculating on the monumental coincidence of this movie's release and subject matter. Certainly seems like all relevant parties were seized by an archetype that had something to say.

Been Re listening to the podcast even before reaching the end, to try and grasp the concepts. Here’s an eerie corroboration of 2:41:03 - I found my natal cycle began 8 days before maximum elongation as the Evening Star, and reckoned something serious must have occurred in or around the family soon after that which coincided with my becoming the serious character I am now. Then I looked around at my Honeycomb Collective almanac notes for this year so far, and discovered that I had indeed been very involved in creative and theatrical works for about 8 days when I received news of a close family friend’s death on the day of Venus’s maximum elongation in June.

Wow. I’m a little late catching up, but this was just incredible! Has to be one of your best episodes.
I don't usually comment, but this really spoke to me because my Venus is rather “masculinized” by Hellenistic standards: She’s a morning star, in a masculine sign, direct and fast in motion, and above the horizon in a day chart. She’s also in detriment in Aries. The Hellenistic astrologers would have considered this quite unfortunate, especially for me as a woman. They lived in a very patriarchal culture and thought women should ideally be meek and submissive, which I most definitely am not. I have to say, it feels a lot better to be associated with an honored goddess of war and justice than to be told I’m just “too masculinized” for my own good! I have experienced some difficulties with my Venus placement, and while I won’t go into details I definitely do relate to that part of Inanna’s story, of coming to embrace her independence after feeling betrayed by someone she once loved. I actually got a little emotional listening to this because it was so affirming.
This feels like a really important conversation to push back against some of the patriarchal narratives embedded in traditional astrology, and I really appreciate that you provide the space for such conversations. Thank you so much Demetra and Chris!

Fascinating. I’ve know of Inanna since the 90’s, and am just recently learning about the Venus synodic cycle, thanks to Chris Brennan and his interviews with Demetra George and Arielle Guttman. It makes a lot of sense to consider how Inanna is represented by the Venus cycle. I look forward to learning more about where in the cycle I was born and what kinds of experiences that suggests.

I think an astrologer was definitely consulted for Barbie. When a bit figure like Robert Downey Jr and Cameron Diaz admits to using astrology, you can get Greta and Margot would probably have asked for guidance. I don't think they planned everything but probably had a general awareness of the timing.

I hear the first calls of descent. My native Venus is retrograde at 29 Leo and I resonant with Inanna’s situation at the heliacial evening set and the inferior conjunction and just this past week a skeleton relationship that left me with feelings of degradation and isolation was revisited. The stars aligned where I just so happened to run into this person. I’m constantly asking myself why I attract these illicit relationships and nothing has better answered this question than with this deeper understanding of Venus retrograde. All of the things Lady Demetra said about feelings of betrayal, hidden world of sexual mystery and taboo, issues with self worth, esteem, ability to socialize with the norm, and also the part about interest in and participation in the occult and esoteric. I appreciate this lesson, I had a ball with the Barbie movie and this archetypal alignment is uncanny collectively and personally. I’m going outside tomorrow morning to see if I can see our morning star and channel her sovereignty…maybe recite some of that poetry to Inanna…

Margot Robbie also played in a movie called "Babylon" with Brad Pitt. It is about the underbelly and destruction of Hollywood. However, I found it relevant to much more in these kinds of societies similarly depicted in Barbie it sounds like. Interesting too they are both based in L.A. and we could go on for days about that.
Also, it is interesting that Libra rising charts depict the "walking contradictions" of Inanna/Ishtar, in that all the signs are in their opposite sign's house. Some astrologers have referred to this as a paradox, and others are very dismissive of it, but in order to balance the scales one must go to the other extreme sometimes, and usually as a first reaction. But over time, and perhaps through cycles of maturation, as Inanna/Ishtar's descent could also represent, one learns you don't have to go to such extremes to find balance. In fact, with the love, you can find a center to begin with. And that might be her part of the story about forgiveness.
It should be noted that as some argue this, all charts sign's are in opposition to each other, but what is unique and distinct about the Libra rising chart is that they are in each other's houses, unlike any of the other charts.
While with Libra it is about the other, it is also about finding autonomy in Aries, as Demetra said. She comes out independent and strong, casts her judgement, and then forgives. This would be the archetype of the sign of Libra as well. Eventually learning you can just stand in the center objectively and make loving strong decisions about relationships from a place of independence and strength, and just like Inanna did, according to each person's behavior. Boundaries.
My birth name, tarot cards, and natal chart all led me to Ishtar. I am a double Libra with Moon in Taurus, but also Plutonian, which is not technically recognized Hellenistically, but gave me answers to my life to know that. So these themes between Libra, Aries, and Taurus, Scorpio are very prevalent in my chart. My Venus is 30˚ from my Sun, an evening star. I can't say I feel stuck at one particular place in the cycle, but have watched it played out over and over in various scenarios in my life.

My best friend has Venus at maximum elongation in her birth chart! She's a cancer rising, Gemini sun at 1 degrees, with Venus in Aries at 17 degrees!
If anyone has insights about that I would love to hear them.
I didn't know it was maximum elongation, but knew it was special to have Venus not in a sign neighboring the sun. I have always thought it speaks to her visionary nature. She started a very popular and successful shop in our city.

As someone with an 8th House Scorpio stellium including my Sun, Mars, Mercury and N. Node (all conjunct) also Uranus. I have always felt a strong connection to Inanna and her story. I haven't come across any archetype that is more Scorpio (in my experience)♏🌌🥰 I feel that Venus being the ruler of Taurus which is the opposite sign of Scorpio also plays into this. The 8th house being a place where we may need to release and let go of our Taurean resources and belongings, until nothing is left but our raw, true self a place where we can be reborn again into another self (after the exploration of our dark side and soul). Also interesting how Mars rules Aries with the opposite sign Libra being ruled by Venus both the Yang/Masculine expression, while the Feminine/Yin expressions are seen in Taurus/Scorpio. The Mars and Venus duality in which we must find balance ☯️

@@lisasmith3657I wouldn't doubt it 🥰 those of us with strong "bad" planets/houses/placements probably all experience the feelings of disconnection and/or melancholy that urge us to go deep, do the shadow work, and re emerge into the light. I think people like us are here to help others through that descent into the shadow self and the death of the ego that precedes the birth of a new evolved soul.

One thing I heard recently that Inanna was Sumerian and when several cities, up to 34, were taken over by Arcadia, there were similar goddess and a decision was made to amalgamate them. One woman supposedly created Ishtar which was similar to Innana, but had a few more additions from other goddess. So instead of having a local goddess, Ishtar becomes more prominent in the region and spread further abroad because of her culminating characteristics.

Do you guys know about the Ghibli film princess Kaguya (HBO max)? She is the Japanese moon goddess associated with the pieces full moon in September. A Chinese - American version of the story / holiday is in a Netflix film "over the moon". Another similar beautiful Asian legend / holiday, the Qixi festival, 8/22/23 this year, involves the fixed stars Vega and Altair. This is celebrated throughout Asia on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month (Leo) and is like Valentine's Day.

George RR Martin is another writer who has explicitly made it a point that he "gardens" rather than plans his work, and yet if you read the actual ASOIAF books they're absolutely littered with almost direct translations of these exact Lucifer/ Venus/ Inanna myths. The history of his world even mirrors the civilizations where these specific myths germinated in real life, and the main plot is essentially the story of the rebirth of these archetypes as forces for change in Westeros.

Before really getting into astrology, around my Saturn return (maybe during or after) I got into early Egyptian and Canaanite mythology. Anat (the same archetype as Innana) was my favorite. When the early Hebrew’s started their church, woman had no interest in a monotheistic male god, so Anat and temples to worship were included in the Old Testament and culture. She was removed later.
I’ve mentioned it before, it’s more fitting here and it’s better than Barbie. La Mar Enfortuna is a band made to preserve lost and forgotten music, manly from the Sephardim. The best song you’ll ever hear related to this archetype is Salome.
Lyrics: Down in your hole you look cold
I hear your voice like music like gold
Thy body so white, thy hair so black
Thy mouth so red

Suffer me once to take you my way
The moon is a virgin but she can't turn away
Suffer me twice I'll come back for more
I will taste of thee
Thy body, thy core

Daddy my dear you're on fire
I'll give you a dance
Just grant my desire
My king you shake
You need to watch through silver veils

And I'll dance for you
The way you want me to
Like this

Now bring me the head of that ivory-pale boy
He ain't no saint till I've taken my joy
All the treasure in Palestine will never replace
That strong, strong head contemptuous face

On that silver shield, you look cold
We meet once again just as you were told
Now I bite down on hot wet lips
But you don't cry out

Now I'm riding the head of that poison-pale boy
He ain't no saint till he's tasted my joy
All the treasure in Palestine will never replace
That strong, strong head
Contemptuous face
Strong, strong head
Unconquerable face
I plan to watch Barbie once the marketing phase stops, it usually results in me being unimpressed and the promotion being hyperbolic. Plus, it still makes me think of Childs Play. Childs Play was a comedy. If I wanted to overanalyze it, I’d say the movie was about a boy who projects his Freudian ID onto a doll which takes on a life of its own that then tries to take control of the child through psychological possession; it appears Barbie is similar in that it’s focused on the cultural pleasure principle in various ways. What I’ve heard is it’s actually balanced, despite commentators saying it’s not. But these comments are from commentators who make money complaining. It sounded, to me, like a criticism of both patriarchy and matriarchy as both being flawed and commentary on it being propagated by capitalism. We’ll find out when it’s streaming.
After this week, I’ll be actually starting my development of an Astro system. I really appreciate Demetra’s volumes on traditional astrology, the sign sympathy systems are a gift that keeps on giving.
Not at all that interest in Barbie, but feel free to read too much into my affinity for Anat and even that song.

Just hit the Marilyn chart and Leo connection.
I think you'd be very interested in Bild Lilli's (doll) chart. August 12, 1955, Neustadt bei Coburg, Germany.
I think you'll find a much stronger Leo connection there.
The Lilli strip itself actually has a strong Cancer link, but Pluto, SN, and Lilith were all in Leo. In fact, I find the Leo Lilith to be especially interesting.
I tried to pull Reinhard Beuthien's chart (creator of Lilli), but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much info out there about him. I'd be very interested to see.
