  • SOULBOYSSOULGIRLS......THE ROOTS OF BRITISH CLUB CULTURE AND WHERE IT ALL BEGAN........From clubs like CRACKERS, LACY LADY to LE BEAT ROUTE and WAG....1974 - 1985
British Youth and Fashion Culture came into it's own with the emergence of Mods in the sixties. Skinheads and Suedeheads followed adopting SKA as their soundtrack which opened white kids to black dance music and culture. For many, being SOUL BOYS, GIRLS was the natural progression for the young black and white British working class, creating clubs with a real unity. The movement captured the growing and mutual love of early 70's imported American Soul music. Unlike Northern Soul, precious little has been written or documented on this important time in our history. SOUL BOYS SOUL GIRLS aims to change that.
This Group is for all those pioneering clubbers from the Early-70's-to Early 80's. To celebrate Disco, Soul , Funk and Jazz and those who clubbed at the likes of CRACKERS,... BILLYS,..... So happy I was part of this scene when I was young ... I don't remember any fights or politics. Everyone just loved to dance, listen to the music and follow the fashions. What a brilliant education for my teen years and friendships which have stood the test of time. We were and still are blessed!

Wow so many fond memories as a teen venturing to all the latest clubs, how lucky were we. I lived in canning town back then, bought my first car a mk2 Ford capri, that was it then we drove everywhere.North south east and west the best days had, with the best Djs and best music. I'd go back in heartbeat tbh :-)

Yep, now I feel old. Good days. We lived in Stevenage but spent most of our Fri/Sat nights at Lacy Lady or Skindles, or some other London clubs I can't recall. Even the Outlook in Hitchin or Soul nights at the Mecca in Stevenage when we couldn't go too far. All our hols were down in Margate. Then I went to Portsmouth and we hung out at Joannas, Great club, a bit seedy, good music and a sticky floor!

How come no one mentioned the BALI HAI in Streatham S.London? Back then, one had to be a dancer and not a wallflower..We did a complete different version of the hustle..then there was the DEAD MAN DROP in 1975, performed by two guys during the dance competition-the floor emptied. BAD LUCK by HAROLD MELVIN and THE BLUE NOTES was the song that lit the fire.

Reminds me of the 1980s Scooter scene for different looks but back in the day you properly not bat a eye lid if a Soul Boy walked past as the image wasn't as striking like a Punk, Mod, Skinhead, Teddy Boy, Heavy Metal fan and Biker but still the Soul boy seemed way ahead and is most underrated British youth cult.

    • @dizmop
      @dizmop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

that's with hindsight as a lot of the colours and style has now been integrated into the mainstream, I remember the first time I saw a soul boy, an Indian guy with his hair long and curly at the back, he had a White Sergio Tacchini tracksuit with the matching double stripe on the calves and arm, the zip part open on the side bottom cuff, he may've had Diadora trainers on, I was about 12 or 13 and had never seen anything like it, he looked so flash and cool that I was mesmerised

Yo, in the list of DJ's of the Day you omitted "Graham "Fatman" Canter from Gulliver's in Mayfair. Many times he sat in for Robbie Vincent hosting his soul/funk program onRadio London on Saturday mornings whenever Robbie had to travel out of town. Anyone remember this? The UK funk scene in the 70's was simply incredible!

Yeeaah!!!! Those were the days. Brit Funk, Robbie, Greg Edwards, Froggy, Solar Radio, LWR and the rest of the Pirate radio stations.
    Whatever happened to the Funk?
All we have had since the early 90s is Jamiro-Rip-Off and Daft-Chic :(

Plenty of funk still being made, plus the really rare stuff is getting reissued. It's just not in the mainstream (thankfully) I bought quite a few of Froggy's records off of his No.2 - can't remember his name?

I was a bit young for a lot of this starting going to the clubs 1982/83 (1984 last good year of this scene I suppose so I just made it!). Then got into Acid House in 1988 so living just outside london in the 1980s was a good place to be. Caister and Bournemouth weekenders, Flicks, Windsor Safari, Jacksons Staines, JFM, Horizon and Robbie on Radio London. They were the days.

The days where I would walk out in the snow to get to a club if the buses weren't running. Sometimes with no coat and in my shoes with the gold band round the heel! And other times I would wear my camel coat in a club all night. Days of dungarees, soul beads, Addidas tees, stripey tees, seamed jeans, frayed jeans, pleated skirts, kilts, pussycat bow blouses, Jaegar, safari suits, crocodile skin shoes and bags, Fred Perrys, jerkins, turtle necks, boating shoes ... and that was just the guys!!

Jill Clark I'm a Northerner (b1976) and too young to take part in either scene, but, listening to the music I DEFINATELY prefer the Southern soul sound and style. You don't hear a whole lot about it though in the media. Northern soul is still quality though, and, when I lived in Wigan for a while I spoke to many people who had visited the casino back then.

This was always brilliant scene, and so was the rare groove scene which was really an extension. Never will understand with the media's fascination with 'Northern Soul', it's utter shit and we dance far better than them and listen to a broader selection of music.

Southern Soul and the Northern Scooter scene seemed to be overlooked by Northern Soul and Skinhead culture but never seen any photos of Rare Groove scene.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
There is nothing more important then getting right with the Creator, Jesus Christ. Those that refuse to come before him and repent with godly sorrow for sinning against him will stand before him in judgment and be cast into the lake of fire.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Heb 9:27)
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)

haha...yes why is tommy in over half of those pics ..and Jabba in none ? maybe I missed him. where is this facebook page you all speak of , being a grown up at the end of the 70s I can use a computer but fb is a bit off my map.
Used to be Bars manager at Scamps in Hemel , not that you needed a bar on a monday night, a cold water tap would have done, back then there was no bottled water so the toilets were where you went for refreshment. I used to stick one person on the bar in case anyone fancied the odd rum and spent the night watching the dance offs .
Occasionally the odd local would wander in for a late drink on a monday night and you could see their amazement at what must have looked and sounded like a different planet. A long way from the usual Fri/Sat night eight pints, drunken grope , bit of a punch up and a kebab /row with a cabby on the way home .
The UK dance scene is well documented but somehow this fantastic creative 'for the love of it' part has never had the recognition it deserves. The music and the dancing were what was important. most of the clubs had shabby facilities and pretty bad sound systems, apart from a few DJs who made a name the majority were hidden behind the decks..Cookie Keith (Scamps) never really got any praise but he knew what to drop and when and was a true afficionado of the music. He was probably out of pocket each week coz he would have to go to London Watford or Luton for tunes ..at least I was on wages and could afford a car ,Keith despite holding together the best night out north of the river on a Monday lived with his mum and dad and relied on lifts or the bus .
I wonder what happened to the DJs that were working away each week in the clubs mentioned above , not Froggy et al but the many others who if they had been spinning tunes in the late 80s and 90s would at least have a name (DJ Blah) that they could promote ( and that the MC could repeatedly shout over the top of the music maybe even preserved forever in multipack cassette format.
Unsung heroes of a much underrepresented scene.
Speaking of which check DJXS on utube ..Funky Sandwich
