  • Ignore the Posh Prick talking about Northern as if he was a regular at Twisted Wheel, Wigan, Morecambe, Torch etc. Just another daft cunt thinks he can tell us what it's all about ffs. And watch out for the Southern Pooftahs who just look like a bunch of Ian levines best mates.

I have been a DJ and passionate Northern Soul fan since 1972, when I became a regular at the Catacombs in Wolverhampton [a massively under-rated club] the Torch in Stoke [best all-nighter I ever went to!!] and Blackpool Mecca. After the Torch all-nighters sadly ended in early 1973, I started going to Va-Va's in Bolton [which tragically suffered the same fate as the Torch] so ended up as a regular at the ubiquitous Wigan Casino.
By 1978, I hardly recognised the 'original' Northern Soul scene I knew - it had become blighted by 'tourists' and crappy music. Like many of the real 'Soul Boys' I never publicised or told people I was on the NS scene. [you never did that back then!] I just slowly drifted away from it and moved onto other things. Not as good to be honest - but then nothing ever would be.
Then in the 1980's I moved to London for a while and by pure luck [or 'bad luck'?] I went to all the 'top' clubs [the Wag, Camden Palace, Ronnie Scott's etc] and started hanging around with a lot of well-known 'faces'. I won't mention their names unless necessary [I am NOT a 'name-dropper'!] but Robert Elms was one of these people - and a more arrogant, self-absorbed prick you will never meet!
A supposed 'journalist' for the Face magazine, the guy was like shit - everywhere. For some bizarre reason he was invited on countless TV programs to pontificate on anything remotely focused on 'youth culture', music and style - although I truly don't know why. So, to see him featured in this documentary on Northern Soul is the living end! [remember, this is the same self-righteous prick that claimed that anyone 'living north of Watford, was Northern Scum'!!
How on earth someone that has NEVER EVER been to any one of those legendary NS venues I went to can claim that 'it's not about the music, it's about the kids' has to be full of shite! YES, the people [and 'atmosphere'] were unbelievably important in why we traipsed hundreds of miles every weekend, but the ultimate attraction was and always will be - the MUSIC!
Ask anyone NS record collector/DJ worth his salt [people like John Manship, Mick Smith, Ian 'Pep' Pereira, Colin Curtis, Richard Searling, Ian Levine, Steve Glover etc] if they know who JJ Barnes, Frank Wilson, Christine Cooper, Marvin Holmes, Duke Browner, Terry Callier, Linda Jones, Arthur Anderson et al are - they will probably regale you with that artist's entire life story!
One thing that really pisses me off about these 'Southerners', is how they have suddenly 'jumped' on the NS 'bandwagon' after years of ripping the shit out of it and us NS fans. I remember occasionally going down to London some weekends whilst I was still on the NS scene - and attending a number of 'big clubs' there [eg the 100 Club, Goldmine etc] and whilst they were playing a completely different type of Soul music, I still enjoyed myself.
I didn't know anyone at these places - and despite Elm's ridiculously pompous proclamation, that didn't matter. For me it was all about the music!

In Bristol and also Newport we had a similar thing and they were called kit lads or kitters ,to this day - although many people remember them ive never seen anything that documents this ...

You need to see how they danced in the 70s. Backdrops Cossacks banana rolls spins etc but you only did acrobAtic moves at certain times in the music timing is everything too young go niters 13/14 77 had to. borrowers birth certificates just get in over 15s of a Saturday didn't stop going niters after casino. closed just glad I did get into niters before it closed kept the scene goin with he other diehards in the 80/90s. N2000s knees won't let me dance nowadays 😭

Agreed none were Skinheads same with most who comment on the Soul scene, been into it since 77 didn't think it died when the Casino closed but was part of the DIEHARDS who kept the scene going in the 80s. Been to many Northern nighters never seen any of them, the worst is going to a Northern night and asking for a record only for the DJ to tell me he's never heard it. Just another jumping on the bandwagon for kudos. Still have my memberships from 70s 80s 90s, If the DIEHARDS hadn't been there the soul scene would have died but now it's bigger than ever but fed up of newcomers trying to make a true underground music movement mainstream. Theres pop music for mainstream.

Simeon -- you didn't listen. He said "it was being enjoyed by working class whites (in Britain)". And it was. I was one of them. Not a difficult concept to understand. He didn't claim that the British invented the music itself - we just REALLY appreciated it.

@@whelleysoulboy64 That's a myth. There were lots of people in the US into those records long before they were 're-discovered' by UK dealers. They just weren't commercially successful across the US, but locally many of those records were well known.

Northern Soul was soul music that wasn't good enough to get into the mainstream charts.
    Nothing special about it.
