I really love Tokiame's art in this game. The heavy use of black inking around the character portraits gives it a unique aesthetic that none of the other games have, and it sorta tie-in with the story what with the talk of oil being introduced to Gensokyo, so it makes the characters look as though they 're diving to "black waters."
I love how this game and 19th proved that Yachie is the weakest of the matriarchs: >Saki, challenging extra Stage >Yuuma, final boss and capable to defeat many protagonists >Yachie, 4th stage and gets outsmarted by Aunn by accident
I see the fact that Yuuma is slow on ground forcing you to jump around to be faster as a cheeky way of making reference to how goats loves to jump around.
As soon as i saw Yuuma's design and theme as well as seeing Flandre back in a game after 20 years i was ecstatic. Not only that but i went through over a months process to make Yuuma's cosplay from scratch. I love her.
Someonw pointed this out in another video, but I love how Okuu's the only one that initiates a fight without saying anything and then either doesn't question it until after it's over (if Reimu) or completely forgets she was fighting anyone at all (if Joon and Shion).
Not only return but was the one who solved the incident. Practically killing two bird with one stone. She gets to “play” and solve an unsolvable incident that even Reimu can’t solve.

Flandre is the average swordfighter, Reimu is the brawler, Marisa is Fox/Falco, Kanako is Steve, Shion and Joon is a worse Pyra and Mythra, but I don't think Murasa has any equal
This was technically the first official touhou game I’ve played, and he got pretty much everything right. Just wanted to come on and specify that the only differences between difficulties is that higher difficulties have more health and less red barrier time. So you see the same number of bullets in easy mode as in hard mode. Therefore I actually recommend starting on easy as harder difficulties are just a test to see how well you can deal with the spellcards you learned.
Jo'on and Shion are the most broken character in the game in my opinion, i love using them, but i can understand why you don't like them they where the ones i used to clear greedy mode for the first time
The most american of Touhou games. A bunch of people invade another place because there's oil there and then just drop touhou equivalent of an airstike when locals do not cooperate.
I remember playing this through-and-through about a year ago when it was in Japanese only and loving the gameplay. Can’t wait to get back to it when I’m free for the story.

Try "Touhou Patch Center" it's a tool that let you translate any Touhou game at any language you whant with translations made by the community, also is easy to use and works with Steam versions
The learning curve reminds me of how blazblu works where every character has a different gimmick where you have to essentially learn how they actually function if you want to win a game against anything but ai cause you can only do basic attacks since they stay somewhat the same besides a few characters *cough cough* mai natsume *cough cough*
Never played blazblu (or much of fighting games, really), but 2 things I liked about Smash 64 was how simple the gameplay was, while still making every character fell unique.
@@linkolek if you ever do go into fighting games I would highly recommend BBCF almost every character feels unique from each other because of how their gimmicks work and the way their kit goes for the win condition, using the grappler Iron Tager as an example his gimmick is the hit you with a drive than pull you in for a grab because his drive magnetizes you and will pull you to him anytime he uses any move using electricity, and the opposite of him would be toakaka where her gimmick is to use her drive to dash across the map to use hit and run tactics or use them for large combos to maximize dammage. There is many different types of playstyles but going through them would take forever and is much more fun to learn about
I feel like expecting a game to be completely in a matter of a few months is not just completely idiotic, it's downright contributing to the normalization of absolutely awful workplace practices in the video game industry.
I’m not sure if the comments mentioned this or not, I went and checked, the Easy Mode was added to the Steam version around the same time as Yuuma and Greedy Challenge was. By the way, Yuuma’s Spork, is understandably mistaken as a Spoon. (I know that pain of the game’s challenge, went through it myself basically twice, which fun fact, Yuuma’s unlock text was actually untranslated until version 1.15 on Switch).
So now that I've found a community of people that actually care about this game, can anyone tell me why on the English patch of the greedy challenge why is it when i look at the descriptions of the power up between fights is Okina saying a bunch of squares rather than what the power up actually does? I'm on PC by the way Just want to point out that what I mean is also shown in this video at 18:19
Sadly PC Version in English is not Dub the Same as the Switch version in Fact there Plenty of Lines that aren't the same at all they just gave up after Yuuma Story mode was done
This is my first canon touhou game that I also finished (still need to do challenge mode). I also bought the physical soundtrack of this game because it's an absolute banger.
I spent ages trying to beat Murasa's route aswell as Joon and Shion's largely because of Yuuma's final attack, but overall quite enjoyed the game. Yuuma's true final phase on Flan's route took me a couple tries as well but felt accomplishing enough to make up for the couple times I had to take a break. Yuuma's definitely solidified herself as one of my favorites though, both in themes and in character design.
I think I've made it clear in a lot of circles about how burnt from this game I am. I do think however you neglected to mention comparison with the very things that overshadow some of these games themselves, them being the fan works. There have been 𝐝𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 of Touhou fan games that have taken these characters, concepts and mechanics into a 2D platformer type game. Of course it may seem easy to brush a lot of them off like how a lot of them are parodies of other games thus having mechanics from those put together with Touhou stuff, regardless of your Luna Nights or so on. But there has been a circle called LION HEART that have made a handful of works that do attempt a mix at what has been done with making them action platformers. In that sense I've ended up comparing this game to a lot of stuff they did ages ago. The overall structure of this game is a lot like Mystical Chain but instead of the depth of gameplay being structured in learning your characters and how they synergise, 17.5 just ends up in a scattershot direction which I find it frustrating that this whole concept was done better by a group who had familiarity with this. Though that's probably harsh to say, it still baffles me no one else from Tasofro decided to pitch in one way and just left the two guys as they were. Not to try and pitch in or tell them to take a proper break or give some tips on what could have made the game flow a little nicer together. Everything else about Gyoukou Ibun is great. The gameplay is just the standpoint that I feel so bitter regardless of how many second chances I give it. I hope whatever the next project they do however and whether or not a Touhou game will follow this gameplay-style again but refine it, I hope I can be way less bitter to this game one day. People hate it when you rag on about the low points of something despite change and I also happen to hate that.
Not sure if you're not understanding the gameplay flow well, but the gameplay has very nice risk reward tradeoffs and it is very smooth to go from offense to defense and back again. I will have to push back especially on the part of learning your characters, this game is "Learn how to use your character" the game. I've played the Lion Heart games, and while great I don't think their implementation of bullet hell is better than what Tasofro did, the issue is this game doesn't do a great job at teaching you the flow, it only teaches the very basics.
I do Agree this game is Amazing And I Did Beat All of Story Mode with All charaters on Normal and I have no Problem with Any charater The Hardest it toke was Joon Vs Yuuma Last Attack and Okina Boss Battle (on Normal It Make Magalor Soul in the True Arena Look Really Tame) but yes I do really like this game Easily A Amazing Spinoff and I Do Hope the game does get Squeal improving the gameplay a Lot more Only Problem is that Greed Challenge on PC Is Broken Where the Difficulty with the Charaters attack mainly Marisa Blood Yammie Blood Usthou and Kutaka ect if you get hit it takes a Full Bar even if you have Low Items (and the Item that Give you More HP Yugi Sake isn't showing up) If that does get fixed/Patched I should be able to beat Challenge mode at least once Touhou Sunken Fossil World Could have Ending up like Enchanted Portals Bad But Thank Goodness That Not the case easily going be a Game That I Will Remember and Okina theme GOES SO HARD!

the main thing for Yuuma power and why she was so strong is basically her ability to "eat and absorb anything and basically turn it into her own power but do to how flandres ability works the 2 basically cancel out each other she couldnt absorb flandres dmg from her ability while flandre couldnt really F4+ALT her. but personally i feel like yuuma should have still won do to being older than flandre and having way more combat experience while flandre ( even if she was trained by Okina) would have had less of it given her Lore . granted Yuuma is heavily carried by her op pls nerf ability while flandre really isnt
Man, you didn't even mention what really made me find this game insane: how its just a massive commentary on oil and human greed. "The most cursed substance", Yuuma saying that it's made from the desires and lifeforce of living creatures, and how the outside world uses it fully aware this dark secret. Freaking wack
How in goddam is anyone supposed to build Yuuma's meter in any practical way? It drains periodically, to the point that it's easier to ignore the mechanic entirely. This game is easily one of the best games I've ever bought, but I wish her water sucking was useful.
This game was good but the one, huge problem I have with it is... the game itself. Here's the thing, like it or not but Tasofro has been getting pretty sloppy with pretty much every game they release being either incomplete, undercooked or both. HM was missing stuff related to Kokoro, ULiL was decent but is incomplete on PC due to the PS4 exclusive stuff, AoCF is still getting fixing updates and was missing things. GI is the culmination of all this, not only did it take almost 3 years to release and when it did it was still undercooked in terms of gameplay _and_ was missing features like the entire Yuuma story and the Greedy Challange. Don't get me wrong, the game in concept is great, the music is incredible, Yuuma is one of the best characters in Touhou and the story is great as well. But none of it can amount to much when the game itself is just not well done. I get that people in Tasofro are ZUN's friends and he trusts them, but he should also keep in mind how big Touhou fanbase is and make sure the games are as good as possible (this goes for ZUN himself as well, since 18.5 and 19 have been pretty sloppy). Edit: Oh I also forgot, in PC version of GI, the Greedy Challange is bugged and you CANNOT get the Hoshiguma Dish that replenishes your life and increases your max health, and this is STILL NOT FIXED. It is THE ONLY WAY to heal, meaning it is MUCH, MUCH HARDER to complete. So yeah, don't even try it because even with Reimu the furthest I got was Kutaka after AN ENTIRE YEAR of attempts every day.
Yeah I legit managed to get my UFO Lunatic 1CC before clearing Greedy Challange on normal solely because of the Hoshiguma Dish not appearing. Tho I did completely stop playing the game couple of months ago so I guess that evens it out a bit.
For Me With Kanako I Got All the Way to Yumma Last Attack (But I Do Agree They Needs to be a New Patch) PS I Beat The Greed Challenge mode on Easy with Both Kanako and Murasa With No Items but I'm still hoping for a patch

the main thing for Yuuma power and why she was so strong is basically her ability to "eat and absorb anything and basically turn it into her own power but do to how flandres ability works the 2 basically cancel out each other she couldnt absorb flandres dmg from her ability while flandre couldnt really F4+ALT her.
but personally i feel like yuuma should have still won do to being older than flandre and having way more combat experience while flandre ( even if she was trained by Okina) would have had less of it given her Lore .
granted Yuuma is heavily carried by her op pls nerf ability while flandre really isnt

"The most cursed substance", Yuuma saying that it's made from the desires and lifeforce of living creatures, and how the outside world uses it fully aware this dark secret.

How in goddam is anyone supposed to build Yuuma's meter in any practical way? It drains periodically, to the point that it's easier to ignore the mechanic entirely. This game is easily one of the best games I've ever bought, but I wish her water sucking was useful.
This game was good but the one, huge problem I have with it is... the game itself.
Here's the thing, like it or not but Tasofro has been getting pretty sloppy with pretty much every game they release being either incomplete, undercooked or both. HM was missing stuff related to Kokoro, ULiL was decent but is incomplete on PC due to the PS4 exclusive stuff, AoCF is still getting fixing updates and was missing things. GI is the culmination of all this, not only did it take almost 3 years to release and when it did it was still undercooked in terms of gameplay _and_ was missing features like the entire Yuuma story and the Greedy Challange.
Don't get me wrong, the game in concept is great, the music is incredible, Yuuma is one of the best characters in Touhou and the story is great as well. But none of it can amount to much when the game itself is just not well done.
I get that people in Tasofro are ZUN's friends and he trusts them, but he should also keep in mind how big Touhou fanbase is and make sure the games are as good as possible (this goes for ZUN himself as well, since 18.5 and 19 have been pretty sloppy).
Edit: Oh I also forgot, in PC version of GI, the Greedy Challange is bugged and you CANNOT get the Hoshiguma Dish that replenishes your life and increases your max health, and this is STILL NOT FIXED. It is THE ONLY WAY to heal, meaning it is MUCH, MUCH HARDER to complete. So yeah, don't even try it because even with Reimu the furthest I got was Kutaka after AN ENTIRE YEAR of attempts every day.

Yeah I legit managed to get my UFO Lunatic 1CC before clearing Greedy Challange on normal solely because of the Hoshiguma Dish not appearing. Tho I did completely stop playing the game couple of months ago so I guess that evens it out a bit.
For Me With Kanako I Got All the Way to Yumma Last Attack (But I Do Agree They Needs to be a New Patch)
PS I Beat The Greed Challenge mode on Easy with Both Kanako and Murasa With No Items but I'm still hoping for a patch

Hmm I'd have to say the story wasn't explained correctly, and now a lot of people will have misconceptions on how the story actually goes 😞. Thanks for bringing attention to this game, it is severely underrated.
