Absolutely love this movie! Especially the mind games. I liked it so much that I bought the original graphic novels it was based on. Surprisingly, though, I was disappointed by the story in the books. In fact, I felt that the screenplay was actually both better and deeper.
Here be spoilers Whoever wrote this explanation or review either has not watched the movie or did not get it. The protagonist is ultimately revealed to be a non-person, just a vessel, a body i.e. EMPTY MAN for the entity to inhabit. The entity is distinct from the empty man. The cultists create this vessel, this soulless body if you will, through the force of will, or meditation. This concept exists in Eastern philosophy and such a creature would be called a tulpa. This empty vessel is imbued with false, made up memories, and cultists who act parts to convince him he is a real person. That is apparently important for the ritual to be complete, ie that the vessel believe they are a real human. The legend of empty man, what ends up killing the teenagers is an urban legend around this entity. They call it "Empty Man" but again, the empty man is the vessel is the protagonist. The urban legend is separate from what is really going on with the cult. The believers or cultists want the entity to become incarnate in a body of its own, presumably to become something like the creature whose remains are found at the beginning of the movie in the cave in Bhutan or Nepal or wherever. The mountain climber in the beginning who kills his friends is just touched by the Entity and controlled by it, he DOES NOT BECOME THE ENTITY. The Entity itself comes across as some Lovecraftian Eldritch thing with no comprehensible rhyme or reason, ie it is CHAOS. My only problem with the movie is that it does sometimes feel like it is two movies awkwardly joined into one, the story of a supernatural being and its cult of believers on the one hand, and the story of an urban legend of some influence that drives teenagers to insanity and suicide on the other. All that being said, I love this movie and I believe it is extremely rewatchable, I must have watched and rewatched it at least three times.
I was thinking of HP Lovecraft, but the Tyranids were after HP Lovecraft. The Empty Man reminds me of Nyarlathotep. The movie kind of makes me think of that creature.
Absolutely brilliant film! Bought the dvd from a local Redbox a few yrs ago. Hoping for an eventual Blu-Ray/4k release! James Badge Dale did an an amazing job as well as all the supporting Cast! Love the brooding atmosphere and the step by step unfolding mystery. Love it! This and The Void are my two most favorite "Cosmic Horror" films! Thank you for the video highlight and breakdown! Now I think a re-watch is in order! 😎👍
This comment brought me back to when I joined the dark brotherhood in Elder Scrolls Oblivion and was given a rundown of all the rules. After each rule there was a threat of invoking the wrath of the Sithis if I broke the rule.
I have to disagree strong enough to comment.. didn't like the movie at all. It was boring. Felt like one of those where they kind of admit to something evil and ominous but never delivers.
I'm convinced that the entire Marvelous Videos channel is generated using an AI that speaks English as a second language.
Look up the dead internet theory and be ready to be freaked out.

Feels like a modern setting for a warhammer 40k. The organization is a cult, trying summon a demon to real space.

The Empty Man reminds me of Nyarlathotep. A being of dark energy and very chaotic.

The only thing I see in The Empty Man, is Sithis, father of The Void from Elder Scrolls.
