In 2020, about 61.5% of Canadian soybeans were produced in Ontario, 18.3% in Manitoba and 18.2% in Quebec.
Canada is one of the Top Producers of soybean. Malaysians generally use the soybean from Canada to make soymilk, tofu fah and tofu for savory cooking. Tempe is also made of soybean. Natto too.

As a Canadian expat I always found it funny when they have signs saying non gmo/organic soy from Canada on the tofu trucks. At least 60% of soy in Canada are GMO beans and at 2 RM a bottle I highly doubt it's organic. And also if not from Canada where else would it from? China? They don't even have enough for domestic consumption and import from Canada. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe US but it's likely cheaper from Canada since the exchange rate is better.

@@kaibotski4939 Funny you mentioned about seeing the terms non GMO/organics on tofy trucks. I haven't seen one so far. More likely to happen at hip cafés so they can charge premium. From what I observed Malaysians are not yet into non GMO or organic produce.

Sweet soy products include taufu fah, soy milk. Savoury soy products are tofu, tauhupok (tofu being fried and soaked in water for hours), soy sauce, soy paste.

Tofu is made from soya beans. Soya beans are beans of the soya plant, used in a variety of foods and fodder, especially as a replacement for animal protein.
Normally tofu is very bland on its own, so in order to make it taste good you need to add in other flavours to allow it to absorb it to make it flavourful.
As for soya sauce, the reason why it is black is because soya beans are fermented along with roasted grain, brine and etc.
Hope this will give you some sort of idea of what tofu is. By the way, really impressed that you eat chicken feet. Although you are still getting use to eating it but hey you are giving it a try and you actually finished the whole chicken feet. Good job Steve. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

hahaha.. I really miss Ipoh. Thank you for showing the temples that are still kept in good condition despite of the lockdowns the last 2 years. Always loved visiting the tortoises and there used to be someone who sells the "kangkung" vegetables for us to purchase to feed them.
As for tofu.... you got to imagine that
Soy beans, soaked until they are all expanded, blend them very fine with water, and then "milk" the juice (super finely blended soy chunks) off from a cheese cloth and cook them. Once they are cooked, add on this special "stabilizer" (like gelatin?) to make this "tasteless pudding" that are usually settled in square blocks.
Tofu fa is the same, just the amount of "stabilizer" is different to create that softness that you can just scoop it up with a super thin "spatula" to create the layered soft "tastless pudding" and you add on the sugar / syrup to make it tasty.
Soy sauce: as far as my former classmate told me (he used to own a factory but not sure he still has that) is that you naturally ferment the soy with salt and (not sure of other ingredients) to create this salty (and some slightly sweet) sauce that goes on with anything.
Fermented soy, the full formed ones are usually very popular in Ipoh as part of the condiments to the rice and other dishes; the mushed ones in jars are one of the cooking ingredients for many nice Chinese dishes.
Hope that will give Steve a clearer picture that they are just soy beans in all sorts of forms. haha.
Great content and even some of the places I do not know exist in Ipoh! (the Museum for example)

And yet some of them still complain. Sorry to spoil the vibe but it’s like gimme more, gimme more when so much has been done and given. Many even relocated to Canada, America and especially Australia. See how much you’re liked there, given the quite rampant bigotry towards Asians in general. The Japanese love it here. Some don’t ever want to go back to Japan and at least one even wants to be reincarnated as a Malaysian. Yes, the politics suck and there are a number of ills but we do try to get along and are tolerant, especially the Malays. And the NEP? It’s to help improvised Bumiputera, not only the Malays. And why be so miserly hearted when we do not stop anyone getting rich and holding the economy in their hands? Go ahead, be rich, flourish. We, or at least the average Malay, just want to get along, raise our children and do our ibadah ie our prayers and other commitments that Muslims are obligated to do because for us, it’s not just about this world and money, money, money. At the back of our minds, there’s always the Hereafter and even here on earth, a God to answer to. Sorry again but for those who still cannot get what the Malays are about in a nutshell. Actually this is a message about how some should be thankful and see the glass as half full and not as half empty. A special apology to Ivana who I think is a lovely lady. Btw, my grandma was Chinese. I think about 60% of Malays are mixed but to some, we’re just Malay ……. and that comes with certain connotations.

Chicken feet are delicious. The euphemism some people use is "Phoenix Claws". 😂 I must admit, you tend to find it more in Chinese cooking rather than in Malay.. I went to boarding school somewhere north of Ipoh, and every Friday night was chicken night. They'd slaughter the chickens in the morning, and the laundry man (who was Chinese) would show up and he'd leave with large bags of chicken feet and wings. Apparently had an arrangement with the school. Tip if you're going to try cooking chicken feet yourself - use a pressure cooker. Otherwise they're tough.

You call soya bean milk instead of juice because in Asia it is use a substitute for milk as a source of protein drink for the Vegetarian. Likewise same is applied for coconut. Nowadays as we know that cow's milk are not healthy for us, for it is boosted with growth hormones and involved depriving the calves of their mother's milk, many conscientious people switched to soyabean or coconut milk as substitute.
