Red Red Wine" is a song originally written, performed and recorded by American singer Neil Diamond in 1967. UB40 are a reggae band from Birmingham, England and were part of a musical movement of two tone (ska meets punk-ish) and reggae in the English Midlands late 70's early 80's

Before their huge chart success with these covers, UB40 recorded some of the most important and cultural music in the U.K. In the late 70's and early 80's the U.K. was going through a huge social change. UB40 wrote lyrics for this time. 'One in Ten', 'Earth Dies Screaming', King', 'Food for Thought', the later being a huge favourite of early fans, a classic in U.K. music history.

Definitely, whilst this was undoubtedly successful commercially, it isn't great from a legacy perspective, let's be honest, it's cheese, whereas the songs you've mentioned are still relevant forty years later.

    • @squeeelsbeals2200
      @squeeelsbeals2200 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, cheese for sure. Played to death and used to drive me mad when there was so much more of their great music avalible. The only cover I ever liked of there's was 'Please Don't Make Me Cry'. I suppose, like most bands, if there is an opportunity to make some cash and move to a commercial sound, they will. Sad but inevitable. It just means they moved away from and stopped writing about the issues of the time. At least we have a small legacy of those times and I remember them like they did. Sad but important times in our history.

@@squeeelsbeals2200 the other positive to come out of their success was that the original artist received unexpected royalties and I can't remember who, but they said they made more money from UB40 covering their record than they did from their own version.

UB40 did a good job on the song. Gave the song that little Reggae sound, but as others said Neil Diamond (most active in the 1960's and 1970's). He is well respected famous for "Sweet Caroline", "Solitary Man", "Thank The Lord For The Nighttime" & more good songs from the movie he starred and performed in called the "Jazz Singer", couple of highlighted songs from the movie: "Hello Again", "Love On The Rock" & "Coming to America"

Love how Asia caught that UB40's version doesn't sound like a 'sad song' - cos Neil Diamond's original version WAS a sad ballad that matched the words. UB40 even had NO IDEA this was a Neil Diamond song when they decided to record it. They thought it was an old traditional island reggae song, since that's the version they first heard. I saw Neil in concert around the time UB40 was having a hit w their version. He started out w the slow original version then went into this reggae version. When he got to the rap part UB40 had added (which wasn't in this version for some odd reason), he said 'UB40, we be #1!'. It was hilarious :) Thanks for the video.

Another great choice, and some quality British reggae right here. UB40 was the name of the form you filled out in England to apply for unemployment - something the band members were very familiar with in their early years. They did some great jams - there's an extended version of this with a cool bit of a rap in the middle that you should check out. 'Rat In The Kitchen' was another great jam of theirs. Great reaction as always you guys, peace and love from Canada!

I love when different versions do that. One of my favorite songs is "Heard it through the Grapevine". Marvin Gaye version is sad/soulful about impending breakup. Creedence Clearwater Revival version is more deliberate/aggressive. Then a newer version from Rob Thomas and Daryl Hall is funky, and almost celebrating the relationship ending.
It's different interpretations of the same breakup. All 3 are great.

I would have thought the death of Brian Travers and Astro might pull them together but alas they both haven't backed down and even when their other brother Duncan had a stroke, they still did not have a reconciliation.....all very sad. Fun Fact: UB40 not only invented Reggae - but ALSO hip-hop as well - with the short rap sequence at the end of their official video for this song! 🔥🔥🔥

They definitely didn't invent either of those genres.

I remember this song when I was like 8 or 9. You can imagine all the kids in neighborhood singing about Red 🍷 wine. A reminder yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the death of Layne Staley. I recommend you guys check out Mad Season Wake up, Mad Season consist of Layne Staley from Alice n Chains and Mike McCready guitarist 🎸 from Pearl Jam. Beautiful song beautiful album, masterpiece RIP LAYNE

UB40 was the card used to sign on in the UK. By signing on I mean claiming unemployment benefits. Though most of them knew each other from school days, when they formed most of them were signing on. UB40 have an album called Signing Off, which is what you do when you find employment.

Nothing like a good reggae hit. UB40 have been going since around 1977/78. They really came into prominence though in the 80's and have been a "staple diet" for reggae lovers worldwide. Their name UB40 comes from the Unemployment Form you fill out to get the unemployment benefit in England. Asia you are right. The song doesn't sound like a sad song but it kinda is 😂 but you still want to get up and dance 😂 . They have many, many hits. Labour of Love being one of their top albums along with their first Signing Off. They sing many covers mixed with originals. Sadly 2 of their members Saxophonist Brian Travers and Terence Wilson otherwise known as Astro passed away last year. Great reaction Asia and BJ ❤️

UB40...the name and number of an application form for Unemployment Benefit...they were unemployed when the started the band. Reggae and Ska blended. In UK colour has never dictated the kind of music we love. You should try to see some of their live performances.

RED RED WINE/UB40 charted twice. In 1984 it charted at #34 and in 1988 it charted at #1. The 1988 version includes rap by Astro.

A huge track in the early 80's in England. I loved Manchester Bands but UB40 were also a big influence.
A Birmingham band that had a classic Caribbean vibe but were made up of English, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish, Welsh and Yemeni backgrounds.
Lead singer Alistair Campbell has a beautiful voice that sounds very Caribbean despite being White from the UK.
