I like that vibe! It has a retro campy feel that could be great in an outdoor themed kids room or an indoor/outdoor patio setting

The construction of the toy box itself was perfectly fine. The finish was the problem. You could always refinish it.

I painted black over a shelf that didn't turn out well and banned it in the barn. So it's gone from sight.
then I built a new but nicer one.
I do that when I don't like something.
but your box has become very nice and can still be saved with a nice color.
it may not always turn out as hoped, but we always start again.
    be save!

I hear ya - this is definitely not the first time a project didn’t turn out like I pictured 😂 And thanks!

I like the use of the caning fabric and I really like when creators aren't afraid to show what they believe to be their "less than best". A suggestion for the next design, that chest seemed a little tall for toddlers to be able to reach into. Keep on creating :)

I like the toy box. Like you, I'm not crazy about the appearance of the stained softwood 2x2's, but I'd still put it in the kid's room. I'm fine with the appearance of the stained cane section. In face, I kinda like those sections.
If you had painted the trim, the box might have the appearance you were searching for. All in all, I think that this is an attractive project. You should be proud of it. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks! I think we’ll use it at the cabin or in the basement - can always use more toy storage haha 😂

Usually best to apply a pre-stain conditioner, especially to pine, to help avoid blotches. Gel stain is better than regular as it stays on the surface more, but as you know, can still happen. Don't know what would work on the fabric. - Chris

Thanks for sharing this with us. I had a similar issue when I built a toy box with poplar. I ended up sanding and restaining 3 times and it ended up pretty dark. You mentioned painting. Seems like leaving the caning as is and painting the wood trim with an off white might look nice. Good luck and thanks for being real.

Nice little project... I actually like the stain color .. maybe a second coat but I'm not a fan of that mesh you put on there and then stain .. nope. If you don't like that I've always like the cherry look. Maybe that will work for you ???

Yeah, I would have gone with a lighter, warmer stain AND a glossy finish. But it is a nice design and build.
