      I think I've seen Nicolas Bras do a TED talk with a somewhat similar instrument, but it used a hose he breathed air into in order to inflate the can drum. I think this drum isn't using inflation. It seems to be using some sort of mechanism to push a circular hoop upward into the drum face? I think?

    This is incredible! What a work of genius!
    One thing to try - take a ridged plastic juice cap and place it on the head (hold it down with a finger of your left hand). Then you can "zip" the ridges with your thumb/index fingernails. It makes a fun "zipper" sound effect.
    I use this technique with a simple cardboard box, but I can imagine how it would sound with this drum!

    The almost electronic sounds are incredible. I do wonder how durable this will be over time, I can imagine the membrane losing flexibility and becoming stretched and floppy over time, especially when tensioned for a while.

    • @hccarder

      have to be careful but just hold a lighter under the head about 3" or so and wave it back and forth slowly for a handful of seconds. might want to hold the pedal down? could take a couple of passes. A lamp is a useful alternative.Make sure you remove the lamp shade. haha.... IF your not careful you will make a hole. Works for calfskin and mylar.... A new head is always better. But that's how you extend a drum heads life.

    c'est génial, c'est le genre de truc que je veux plus voir sur yt, c'est tellement passionnant, j'ai tant envie de découvrir exactement pourquoi avec ces aimants ça fait de tel sons même si ça requiert des équations et des trucs mathématique compliqués c'est juste trop cool!
    Ce genre de contenu c'est à la fois satisfaisant car c'est beau, c'est nouveau, intrigant et frustrant car on veut en savoir plus, on sait que ça ouvre des portes mais on est perdu devant l'immensité des choses à découvrir, ça c'est pourquoi je reste sur yt. merci.

    • @NicolasBras
      @NicolasBras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grand merci! J'avoue que je connais pas vraiment le fonctionnement, c'est la première fois que je manipule ces aimants, mais je vais creuser! L'idée c'est de rajouter du poids sur les lignes de vibration de la peau, ça change les harmoniques disponibles, et les grésillements viennent des aimants plus larges d'un côté, la peau vient battre contre un morceau de l'aimant, et ce grésillement donne l'effet distorsion électronique !

    Such a cool creation. I love the tones warbling and wobbling on the way to and from that changes with the tightness of the skin (or whatever material the drum top is made of). It gives some really cool sounds depending on your playing style and you don't get that kind of direct feedback from a lot of instruments. Most instruments are in a steady state of being and you get a certain sound out of them regardless of who is playing it but this is different in how the instrument responds to your individual inputs and playing style. I really like how it sounds.

  • @Acoustic-Rabbit-Hole

    Redefines the meaning of drumming. As drums once were, one is essentially creating rhythmic accentuations in time. The drums' function is exclusive to the beat. Yes, we can tune drum our drums to match a C or a C#, etc. (because any acoustic instrument carries it's own physical resonance.) But we drum ONLY to the given tone; the drummer can't change the fundamental harmonic, per se. Therefore, in drumming, pitch was always an after-thought. But this ingenious instrument now blurs the line between melody and beat. A sort of groove that sings. More than brilliant, I'd go so far as to say this is a paradigm-shift in musical percussion itself. Hallelujah!
