    Enjoyed your video. I recently inadvertently tested the weather resistance of the 16 F2.8. Three days ago, it fell out of my camera pack when I did a face plant while snowshoeing. By the time I was able to retrieve it, the lense had sat in the snow for about 40 hours, during which time the temperature had fallen overnight to minus 21 Celsius. After carefully thawing it out in stages and drying it with silica gel packs, I tested and was delighted to find it is in working order. Quite a tough little lense.

      Ian, great story! Yes, the X Series cameras and lenses are quite durable indeed. I've abused my gear quite a bit and it's all survived just fine, and I've heard that from others, too. A friend of mine dropped his 56mm 1.2 lens in a glacial stream. He dried it out in a bag of rice, and then just left it for six months. Came back later and it worked just fine!
      Someone else I know dropped her Fuji X20 camera on the trail, where it sat for three months out in the element. It even got chewed on by a bear. She eventually found it, brought it home, put a fresh batter in it, and the camera worked just fine! You can read the story here: danbaileyphoto.com/blog/fuji-x-camera-survives-3-months-out-in-the-elements/
      So yea... tough indeed!!

    This is the weirdest thing! Today I was in the local camera store buying some SD cards. The sales assistant mentioned he had a whole load of used Fuji lenses just in. We had a look at them - and I plumped for this very lens! Thanks for the video; perfect timing.

      @@DanBaileyPhoto I’ve got the XT3. Thinking either the XF 10-24 f/4 WR OIS, XF 16 f2.8 WR and/or Samyang 12mm f/2 Manual Focus for Astro. Tough choices. I have a SLIK 450g like 3.5 foot tripod I may bring if I do Astro. Surprisingly, XT3 with lens is so light, that this mini tripod can even handle the weight in portrait orientation. Gotta love aps-c weight savings. Thanks for your response btw- made my afternoon.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For astrophotography, among those three you listed, I would probably recommend the Samyang 12mm. That has a proven track record with night sky shooters. The Fuji 16mm 2.8 is a great lens, but it's really hard to manually focus a lens in the dark that doesn't have a hard stop at infinity. You really want that feature if you do lots of nighttime shooting. Same with the XF10-24. However, the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 has a focus clutch, which means it does have a hard stop. This would be a good choice, as well, or the XF14mm f/2.8.

      Hi Richard, thanks for your comment. I never had a strong desire to get the 1.4 version, mostly because for the size, weigh and cost, and because it’s a very close focal length to my 14. • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know. Those Red Badge lenses are really amazing. According to this review, the 16mm 2.8 may be a little big sharper at 16mm than the 16-55, but probably not by much, and the overall versatility of the 16-55 makes this a very usable lens. Of course, the 16 2.8 is so much smaller and lighter. This is the deal maker for me, so you just need to decide what's more important, the small compact form factor, or the versatility of the zoom. The 16/2.8 is my favorite lens! It lives on my camera. In my small bag, I also have the 35/2 and two Laowa lenses: the 9/2.8 and the 65/2.8 2:1 macro, which is super sharp. That set of 4 lenses is nicely spaced with about 2x focal length increments. And it all fits with the XT4 in a 5 liter sling bag!!! But when I hike, I always take the 16/2.8 and usually one of the others depending upon what I expect to shoot or how I’m feeling that day. Right now, I’m toying with the idea to sell the 9/2.8 and get the 10-24mm, but I would definitely keep the 16/2.8 for its tiny size.

      @@DanBaileyPhoto Thanks, Dan! I truly enjoy your TH-cam channel! I mostly do a lot of “run-and-gun” landscape. Sounds crazy, I know, but I love my wife despite her impatience. So run and gun it is. We love to hike and explore National Parks, State Parks, coastlines, mountains, deserts, small towns, unknown jewels within big cities, and anywhere that is beautiful. Further, I don’t do traditional street photography, but I do a modified version of that along West Cliff Drive at the coast in Santa Cruz, CA, where we live. It is much more open than a city, so my 55-200mm is perfect for that. I get tons of gorgeous, anonymous shots of quirky locals with stunning backdrops, especially at sunset. It’s a magical place!! I’m blessed to live in such a fantastic spot. I’ve also been building a discrete Ford Transit camper van to further our explorations. BTW, I’ve been shooting the excellent XT1 for seven years, but just finally upgraded to the XT4. OMG!!!! It’s amazing. The IBIS and better focus has rejuvenated my love for my 56/1.2. And now you’ve heard of my entire lens collection!!! 9/2.8, 16/2.8, 35/2, 56/1.2, 65/2.8 macro, and 55-200. I will add the 10-24 next. And then maybe the 50/2. For gear, I love the lenses, but also the Fuji bodies with their “retro”dials. My dad bought me a manual SLR when I graduated middle school in ‘79, and Fuji alone seems to understand my connection to photography. We are really lucky to have Fuji, as well as the freedoms and beauty we enjoy in our lives all around us.

      I use it at street, indoors, when I shoot inconspicuously, urban landscapes, if I'm too lazy to yearn for large and heavy lenses. This lens focuses very quickly on all Fujifilm cameras including old cameras, the photographer does not look professional with it, so people around or security guards of various departments almost never pay attention to me, it is weatherproof, in addition , one of my cameras - X-H1 - has IBIS, and this lens can shoot at a shutter speed of 1/8 sec, then I can use it for night shots. And, I bought it in 98-99 condition for 220 USD...

    Excellent video Dan. I have the 23 1.4, which I use a lot as it = 35 mm in 35 SLR focal length.
    Sure, if you want the Rolex, those can go for the 16 1.4, however, I just do not need the speed for landscape-type work, I tend to shoot wider, so the 2.8, at the price point is just very hard to go past. As with watches, a Rolex will not really keep any better time than my car clock! Samee with the 16 2.8 v 16 1.4. Good luck to those who can afford it.

    Hi Dan. I appreciate your expertise and enjoy your positive attitude and enthusiasm. I have the 15-45mm which I bought as a kit lens for an extra $50 when I purchased my X-T30. The cost was a no brainer to me, knowing it may end up later as a 'backup' to a better lens. I'm thinking it may be the time. Having used the 15-45 for over a year, I think it's underrated when used as a wide angle lens. I understand all of the build and operating criticisms of the lens, but the photos at the wider end of the lens (I use it primarily for it's wide end) come out sharp and look fine to my eyes. I have never used the 16 2.8. I like primes, I like the focal length, it's clearly a more solid lens, weather resistant, etc. but I wonder if I'd see any improved performance in the final result over the 15-45. I suppose my decision to spend $399 boils down to preference and handling (clearly to me the 16 2.8 will a better experience), but I'd like to hear your thoughts on the two. PS My photography 'style' is wide to mid, small light lenses and cameras for travel and general walk-around. I also have the excellent 35 1.4, the 55-200 (rarely used or carried other than when I know it will be needed for its telephoto range), and my still loved and carried X100T. Thanks.

      @DanBaileyPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scott, as you've noticed, the Fuji 15-45 is a surprisingly good lens with regards to image quality, especially at the wide range of the zoom. For the most part, the glass inside that lens is very good. It's not like Fuji has separate "good glass" and "ok glass" factories. You're right, most of the difference in price boils down to the build and design features, which were maximized to make the lens extremely lightweight and inexpensive for pairing with the X-A series cameras.
      There will be obvious build differences between this lens and the 16mm f/2.8, and you will see a slight optical difference that will result from these. The main difference is that the 16mm has 9 aperture blades, compared to 7 blades on the 15-45. This will translate to better looking bokeh and a more pleasing look on out-of-focus background subjects. Other than that, both lenses have ED and aspherical elements and Super EBC coating, so they'll both perform extremely well in a variety of situations.
      The 15-45 is a real sleeper in the line, and if you can get past the funky design and mechanics, then it's a great little lens. The kicker will be if you want a more traditional style lens that has more durable construction and weather sealing. As you say, preference, handling characteristics and weather sealing. I'd recommend trying one out in a store and seeing what you think. Hope that helps.

    I own a Fuji X-T3, combined with XF35mm F2, and I am now considering a wide angle. I have the opportunity of buying a 16 f2.8 or a 14 f2.8 almost at the same price.
    What Is your suggestion between the two?
    Thank you!

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there!!! That's a tough decision. Both are fantastic lenses and I really like both of them. The 16mm f/2.8 is weather-sealed and a bit more compact for travel, so that's a hard one to beat. I do love the 14mm f/2.8, but since getting the 16mm, I don't use it as often, simply because the 16 is a bit smaller. However, for night/astro photography, the 14 is definitely the better choice, because it has a hard stop on the focus ring at infinity, which makes it WAY easier to focus in the dark. Yes, absolutely. Hey Keith, that new 18mm f/1.4 looks like a fantastic lens, with outstanding resolution and image quality. It's definitely bigger and heavier than the 16 2.8. There's quite a bit more glass inside there. To compare, the 18 f/1.4 is 13 oz, the barrel is almost twice the width, and it takes a filter size of 62mm, whereas the 16 f/2.8 has a 49mm filer ring.
      With regards to whether the older lenses will be able to resolve on a higher MP sensor, I have read various things on this. I know that the original XF lenses were designed with higher MP sensors in mind, even though they didn't exist at the time. Knowing the history and quality of Fuji glass, my guess is they would make lenses that would remain capable, even as the system evolved.
      I haven't really paid attention the rumors, so we'll see what the future brings! For now I'll just keep having fun with my existing cameras and lenses and worry about that later, if the issue does arise.

The 10-24 is a very good lens, but personally, I’d much rather have a small prime in the wide angle range than a larger, heavier zoom. Yes, if you need extra wide, the 10-24 has it, but for me, I just prefer a smaller lens, and I think for most subjects, the 16 focal length is wide enough and more useful in a wider range of scenes. So, with that in mind. Trading the 10-24 for the 16 might not be a bad option.

    The f/2.8 lens is on my camera when I need 16mm about 80% of the time. Its smaller, lighter and fast to focus. If I'm in good light and know that I'll be shooting in the f/4 to f/11 range, then I don't feel that I give up much by forgoing the faster lens.
    To be sure, when you know that you will need f/1.4, there is no substitute. If you can, own both.

      Hi Albert - I agree, the 16 1.4 is an amazing lens. A full-on pro-quality optic in every way. It's just bigger and heavier than I prefer for that kind of focal length. I had that with my old Nikon 14 2.8, and I'm through with super heavy primes, which is why I love the small Fuji primes so much.
      One area where the 16 1.4 excels is shooting at night, for things like aurora and astro photography. Sweet spot indeed!!! I agree, that combo makes for an incredibly capable and lightweight travel photography kit!! Have fun with it!! What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?

      @@Pixelpeeps-69 Hi. I have the 16/1.4 but thinking of selling it for a 16/2.8 and, perhaps, a 27/2.8ii for their compact sizes. But curiously, why did you sell your 16/1.4?

      @@nathanielngosy 18mm 1.4 is sharper and a more versatile focal length than the 16mm 1.4 but I believe as a general purpose lens the 16mm 2.8 is all one needs

    But I have 16-55/2.8 and it's by far the best lense Im having, sitting on Fuji 90% of time.

      Then it sounds like you’re all set, Serge! If you love your lens, that’s all that matters. 👍
