Port Arthur Historic Site is located on the south coast of Tasmania Australia. Port Arthur Tasmania is one of Australia's most import convict sites.
The British needed somewhere to send their convicts. What better place than the other side of the world. Port Arthur is deemed so important that its a UNESCO world heritage site.
When you visit Tasmania like we did earlier this year a trip to Port Arthur should be on the list of things to do. Port Arthur is located an hour away from Hobart Tasmania. It's certainly one of the best things to do in Hobart and surrounds.
You can drive to Port Arthur or take a Port Arthur tour. We went to Port Arthur with Gray Line Australia on a 9-hour tour.
If you fancy something a bit different there are Port Arthur Ghost tours after the sun goes down. Port Arthur is reported to be one of the most haunted spots in Australia.
Port Arthur served as a jail, convict site from the 1830's through to the 1880's. Port Arthur was a cruel place to be sent where men were broken down both physically and mentally.
The Port Arthur official website states: Port Arthur Historic Site is a special place of vivid history, cultural heritage and stories so compelling, you’ll want to hear them again and again. It’s a place of global significance.

Port Arthur Historic Site is a fascinating part of Tasmania's history. It's amazing to think that hardened criminals were put in such lovely surroundings. I did the ghost tour with some friends and thought it was really spooky.

It looks very tranquil now and such a beautiful setting. I bet it was very different back then!

Visiting the memorial garden must have been eerie, especially having been there before. So sad what happened there.

What an interesting and historical spot to visit! I always wished I made my way over to Tassie while we were living in Australia.

I remember going to Port Arthur about 16years ago with my husband when we stayed and do the ghost tour at night. What an interesting, scary and sad place it is. It is so hard to believe so many bad things have happened there especially with the shooting.

Great overview. That place has such a deep history (quite dark one). It gives you such a great insight into the darker colonial foundation of Australia. We have not been there for years, it is probably time we want back for a visit.
Thanks for sharing. Keep travel vlogging. Adventure is better shared with friends!

I would love to visit as I haven't been to Australia. It is cool to see all to do besides the obvious.

Some interesting and somber history here. Didn’t know there was a mass shooting at Port Arthur until watching your video.

Look forward to visiting this World Heritage site when I'm back in Australia - it's listed along with other convict heritage areas in various spots around Australia which I find quite interesting. Thanks for the tour!

I remember that shooting, at least you addressed the gun laws. Something some other countries could learn from. The convict settlement looks beautiful now but it must have been hell then, especially after that sea crossing.

I think you would be broken enough after spending 3 months on boat to the other side of the world

I like watching your videos, I learn a lot about Australia. I know Australia is huge, but I have a picture of the country with only water and surfing. It is nice to see other parts too

Wow, I find this so interesting. This right up our ally. The prison somewhere we would want to check out. I had heard about the prison before, but I didn't know about the island of the dead. That is sad story about the cafe shooting. I wish Americans would take better action after our mass shootings.

I really can't stand bleeding hearts who make Australia's convict past to be all bad. Have a look at what life was like for the British poor. Convicts who kept their noses clean had a real chance at a better life and some even encouraged their mates to get themselves transported. Australians should never be ashamed of their history.
