- I decided to apply for my California Real ID at the DMV....this video shows what happened. It’s a process millions of Californians will have to go through in order to obtain the TSA approved identification to board an airplane. This is a seriously fun tour of the CA DMV.

The REAL ID isn’t just to be able to fly domestically. It’s also to be able to enter federal courthouses, military bases and other protected government facilities. So for instance, if you get summoned and have to report for jury duty, you’ll need the Real ID or another federally accepted ID to be able to get inside the courthouse.
Sounds like this whole time we been driving with FAKE ID. 🤦♂️

It is true that after my order, I received my driving license after 4 days, not after 2 as they mentioned, but at the same time I am satisfied with the quality of your document and also with the quality of the service. You don’t actually need a real ID to travel in the United States even beyond October 2020 if you’re willing to use your passport for that.

@@antoniocali4943 As long as you are not stopping in foreign countries on the way to Puerto Rico, all you need is a valid ID (Real ID starting 1 October, 2020). Puerto Rico is a United States territory, so you do not need a passport to travel there (assuming you are a United States Citizen/Permanent Resident). However. Mexico will require a passport as it is a foreign country, regardless if you are holding a Real ID or not.

Unfortunately not everyone is as lucky as Moises. It took me four trips to Glendale DMV to get my real ID. My license was expiring this August 2019. I went to DMV with my renewal form, I had filled out application online. The first time was partially my fault since although I had my passport, citizenship certificate and SS card in the card, I forgot and left them in the car. At the end of the process I didn't want to go get them from my car and go back in the long lines again. Why partially my fault, because they made me fill out the application online again. Second time they made me fill out the online application again despite me telling them I've filled it out twice. They didn't care. This time, they gave an orange sheet which has the complete requirements of documents that was not given the first time and didn't get it with the renewal notice or reference to it. The 3rd time I went in confidently with everything, Passport, SS card, utility bills (more than one for safety) and one of the items which clearly was indicated on the orange sheet "Mortgage Statement". At the end of the process the lady at the counter didn't know and supposedly asked her supervisor, whom I didn't see, and told me that was not acceptable despite how much I explained that is the mortgage statement, as it says on it. Her answer was, He (meaning her supervisor) says that's not acceptable. As you already know if you try to explain which may sound like argument, you may be kicked out of DMV at best or will be visiting the City jail. 4th time, again I took a few hours off from work and with all of the above and any utility bill I could get my hand on. This time it was finally acceptable. This was a very time consuming and horrendous experience and time off from work which as you all know it costs you money and pisses off your boss. All because someone there doesn't know what a Mortgage Statement is even though it clearly said so on it with the Quicken Loans company name, address and phone number on it which everybody knows it's major mortgage lender. VERY BAD EXPERIENCE !!!!!!!!!!! Don't leave it to the last days or do what Moises has done and replace it this year before the expiration just to beat the increased number of crowds next year and always consider you may be going to DMV multiple time. Hope you don't have to make 4 trips.
Apparently, I got a letter from the state of California on my REAL ID (I applied pre 2 residency documents). If your address has not changed then you can send the letter as your 2nd residency document. If it has changed, then you have to submit 2 residency documents and make sure you fill out and send a change of address form. Really easy and you don't have to go in to a field office for that part.
I got the letter too, mailed it back right away. Thank God we don’t need to actually go back to DMV to get it fixed.

Just an FYI, I didn’t even make it past the first booth. Apparently, an original Birth Certificate isn’t acceptable. They failed to mention on the check list that you need an official “Certification of Vital Record” from the County from which you were born, so I was promptly turned away. That’s what I get for not having a passport. Talk about Red Tape! So much for scheduling an appointment. Now, they’re booked out until August and my License expires at the end of June. Grrrrr
How do I reapply again for a real id I just recently lost mine somewhere in canoga park visiting my aunt and notice it Saturday I don’t wanna pay for another one I just want get a replacement by not paying the amount of $45 or more just for the Real identication card and that’s to much for the money it should be less than 30-45 bucks 😢😢😢 they should change the rules regulations

Apparently, California is now going to start requiring 2 residency documents due to Homeland Security requirements. Homeland Security somehow allowed CA to use just one document. Details are being worked out but should be able to mail in a 2nd residency document or both. You can always visit a field office if you want to renew it that way. Real ID in CA can be renewed by mail, but this is going to suck and make the DMV wait times just as long if not longer.
Michael Horgan - Yeah, I can’t believe the incompetence of the DMV officials. I am not planning on setting foot at DMV again, so they better accept mail in documents otherwise I’m just getting a “passport card” and use that to fly.

@@HollywoodMoises They made the process easy. Just have to sign a document and check that your address is correct, unless you have changed your address. Then you mail it back to the DMV.
If your child is under the age of 18, use a birth certificate as it lists the parents which is crucial for the proof of residence requirement. If you use a Passport, you must use a document that has that child's name such as a bank statement or an official high school transcript.

If you keep the same date They give you the same date of expration that your current DL shows,,,,, if not you re-take the written test and they will give you a new date of expiration
You need 1 thing from each the 3 categories of documents:
1) Proof of identity: your original birth certificate or "certified copy", valid/current US passport, employment authorization, permanent resident card, valid foreign passport w/ visa and approved i94 form. No photo copies!
2) Proof of a social security number: SS card original or a W2 or paystub with your full SS# on it.
3) Document to prove residency: Utility bill (gas, electric, water, etc), rental agreement, mortgage statement, or medical document (copies ok); 2 documents from this 3rd category.

You can do it with either one but can't do both.
I couldn't quite understand what they were saying about taking a written test. Could you elaborate please?
in oirder to get a new or renew your current license, now you have to take the written test. So be prepared!!!
Option 1: He could extend the expiration of his current license but he would need to take the written test. (RENEW)
Option 2: He could keep the expiration of his current license without taking the test. (REPLACE)
He chose Option 2.
DMV guy replied that his license was due to expire in a year and he was paying for a license that was only good for a year before renewal. He still would need to take the written test at that time.
He said cost was no object he wanted to Real ID.
My brother did not have to and his was expired.
They will make you take the written test if you choose to take it before your license expiration date So I was advised to just Wait since my license is still good to 2019 So im just going to wait and I was thinking of changing it early but The lady told to better to just wait .. I paid $30 for the Real ID california Id for my Daughter this March26 2018
I would personally wait until 2019 to do it and bring in your documentation, including an original or certified copy of a Birth Certificate/Passport, proof of residence, and your SSN card or W-2. Also those who have been married or divorced need to have a proof of name change such as divorce decree or an official/certified copymarriage certificate.
i have a problem i have to wear sunglasess i have blephorspasm and meige syndrome with out my sunglasess on my eyes spasm and close shut and my face spasms im too embarrassed for this to happen to me in front of people at dmv so i never go to renew my state id i also have mentall illenss i dont know what to do

You can do either. I would recommend going in on a Saturday if you are going to walk in. Just say you want to get a REAL ID and you can even apply for one online or at the DMV using their touch screen terminals. Not all DMV's offer Saturday service. If your local office has it, then do it on that day. Appointments are a few months out sadly.
I already got mine last year. But, i need to get my mom a CA senior ID. I was unable to find any videos on this, does anyone know what the diff a regular ID (real or not) vs a SENIOR ID? there is too much confusion. It befuddles me why they would even get a senior id specifically i mean the ID already has a DOB.

No i didn’t have to do that, but I got my Real ID exactly a year ago so things might be slightly different now.

No. U have to order a replacement US birth certificate or renew your US passport. Or a green card or foreign passport with I94 n US Visa etc
so using your older ID from the DMV will not work? we have to provide birth certificates to get that in the first place
Some people got their ID’s way back in the 80s or earlier, back then they could have used bogus birth certificates and gotten away with it, that’s why they are asking for documents again.
What happens if you recently moved back from another state and don’t have any proof of residency of where you live yet?

I received Dmv mail stating that it was going to expire in July this 2019 & to fill simple form and to renew with payment of 36$ and waited 4 1/2 weeks and got mine trough mail .. I didn’t have to show any proof of anything in paper like citizenship or any document bill . Hope this work for you guys with questions

As of now you can do the REAL ID application at the DMV by using a Touch Screen Terminal, or a paper application. However, the electronic application is not yet available at home. You can still use paper with the DMV employee marking REAL ID on the form if you do not trust an electronic application form.

No, the vehicle registration does not count. Some people obtained their registrations with false documents so it’s not valid proof.

No, you won't need to take the test. I went really early, 1.5 years before it was supposed to expire, that's why he gave me so much trouble.

@@hiro32hiro32 I read somewhere that if you renew your license more than 60 days before it expires, you have to retake the written test. Perhaps this was the case with your friend. Mine expires in mid-March, so I have an appointment for the end of January. 2019. Anyway, thank you so much for your reply.
@@luizbarbosa7524 I just asked my friend and he confirmed that he went to DMV less than 60 days before it expires...so it's still a mystery. I did online application in advance, but he did that at his DMV. That's the only difference I can think of.

Yes, they will print you a paper copy either when you pay for the I.D. Or if you need to take the “written test”, they will give it to you after you pass the test.

What it means that if you renew before your renewal notice, then you have to take a test as that is considered an early renewal. However, if you don't then you keep your expiration date. Basically this option is just replacing your current card and is done all the time for those who lose their ID/DL. A lot of people lose their license card for whatever reason. If you renew once you get a renewal notice then you don't have to take a test (18 questions, minimum of 3 wrong answers or less).

I did NOT have to take the exam. But my license will expire next year since I came in so early. If I had taken the exam it would had expired 5 years from my visit.

If your license is under AB60 then no, but if you have a valid Visa without SSN then yes.

its__AMANDAtory - YES, it’s the same as renewing your Drivers license, the only difference is that you will get an “enhanced” driver’s license this time around(aka Real ID) because you are gonna be proving your “citizenship” with the documents you take to DMV. A “normal” driver’s license that can be renewed via mail won’t be acceptable to board a plane next year (Oct 2020), but it would still be legitimate to drive with, since you fly it makes sense to get the Real ID, in other words, you made the right appt. 🙂

Ling Ling - It means that it’s a not a Real ID, and after Oct 1, 2020 you wont be able to use the card you were issued to board a plane or enter a federal building that requires ID. You will have to use a Passport or Passport Card as identification to enter those places. All Californians who are US Citizens that want a Real ID need to physically go to DMV and provide proof of citizenship. Ling Ling - Yep, that's right. And the regular license you got will be valid for everything except flying and entering federal buildings. So if u never fly or go to federal court you are good. The "Real ID" will have a Bear with a Star 🌟 in the part where it says "Federal Limits Apply"

You can actually switch it over by April 22 for free, but it will cost $28 if you wish to fix it plus you need your documentation and you have to take a new picture.

They didn't care about the utility bill once he heard I had a W-2, he didn't even bother to look at it so I don't know.

With REAL ID you have to show proof of residency and SSN. If you want, you can go to an Social Security office and get a new Social Security card and that will definitely work. You need a Birth certificate, proof of address (utility bill, statement, etc that matches your address and name), and a proof of Social Security card or W-2. If you have been married or divorced, you need proof of that (marriage certificate, divorce decree, name change by court, etc).

Ok, took me about 20 mins also. Pretty painless except for the lady at the front who basically said 1. My birth certificate didn't match my utility bill (Alexander Vs Alex) and she tried to say my certified copy of my birth certificate was a copy and I said no its a certified one and her manager said yeah that's valid. 2/3 employees were very nice except for the first lady who tried to shred my soul into a bitter oblivion.

If my passport is expired do I have to renew it?
You can provide DMV with another proof of US citizenship if your passport is expired(it must be current or they won’t accept it), like a birth certificate, passport card or naturalization certificate.
Got Drivers License renewal notice on April 2018. There was a slip of paper about Real ID but said it wasn't really necessary. I went to Sacramento DMV without an appointment at 8am to find a line of 50 people out the door. After 3 hours standing in line , I finally got to the front desk and they asked if I wanted a Real ID. I hadn't thought about it and again the DMV lady assured me it wasn't necessary for me since I had a passport. I wasn't in the mood to go home to get documents and come back so I opted to get regular DL with "federal limits apply" and paid $35.
I have had two automatic 5 year extensions and coming up to 15 years since I was now required to go to DMV in person for vision test and photo ( no written test).
I go home began to think about Real ID. Nobody is saying why Real ID is good for me. DMV says I really don't need it. The web sees Real ID as grand plot to enslave us.
My reasons for getting Real ID.
1. More convenient for air travel. Don't want to lug around the bulky passport book. One less thing to go wrong while traveling. KISS
2. Real ID group will be a better risk pool than the Unreal ID group. I fear decisions by banks, insurance companies, employers, landlords, ... will be based on Real ID.
3. I already have all the documents needed to get Real ID. I just dread going back to the DMV and treated like cattle.
So I made an appointment to DMV, first available date was a month away.
I went to my DMV appointment this week and walked into the appointment line with no waiting.
I came with my "federal limits apply" drivers license, passport, social security card and utility bill.
I had to fill out 3 page paper form.
DMV rep scanned and printed out all my stuff.
I signed lots of paper work.
DMV rep gave me a new temporary paper license, punched hole in my brand new "federal limits apply" drivers license, took a thumbprint and had my photo taken again.
They didn't charge me any money.
I was out the door in a hour.
Tom Robla - Yeah I agree people will make assumptions about you if you have the “ UnReal ID” vs the Real ID especially regarding citizenship. Like you I got it for the convenience of air travel ✈️

Did you get a renewal notice? If so, then you don't have to, but if you renew before your renewal notice (60 days before expiration) you will need to take a test.

It took exactly 8 days to get it in my mailbox.

You are correct in that only 1 card can only be a REAL ID in California. I have both a DL and an ID card and my DL is REAL ID. I would make your DL a REAL ID as that is the card you will most likely use (Unless your ID card is the one you use the most). If you do decide to renew an ID/DL card that is not REAL ID then it will say "Federal Limits Apply."

I'm a little confused on a few things for me since I have a basic idea since I don't drive due to visual impairment and I'm on disability so I don't know what I will show for a bill since my bills are taken care of by someone else. I also don't have a passport right now because it's been lost somewhere along the way so I have a lot of work ahead of me to figure this out! A US birth certificate works. N a medical document or something from social security works for residency

Me too.. It has been 6 weeks.. I call dmv they told me that they didn't scanned my paper so i need to go back to the dmv.. A letter from them would be nice but no i had to call..
I got mine just 1 Month after they began offering it, now that more people know about it the DMV is swamped and I think that’s why it’s become extra slow.
Hi. One question I got my commercial license in December of 2017 if say Federal Limit Apply. My question is when you request a Real ID I will have to do the written exams again. expires 05/18/2022
No, you can just bring in your valid documentation and pay the fee to get a replacement. If you do it that way, you do not have to take the test, but you will have to take another picture.

I did the REAL ID at the Poway DMV and it was not a bad process. I did the replacement option which kept my expiration date. I had to take a new photo and the employee punched a hole in my old license so it is not valid anymore. I got a temp license which can be used in conjunction with a hole punched ID as a valid form of ID. I also used my SSN card (had to be signed), birth certificate, and a bank statement. I had an appointment and it took a short amount of time, and that was me being extremely late as I wanted a hair cut before.
My brother had an expired license and got a new REAL ID with a new picture and did not have to sign his SSN card and had no appointment and he got his rather quickly and this was even having to go to the County office in Kearny Mesa to get a fresh certificed copy of his BC as his current one was sent off to the Passport office.
Those who have changed their name must have documentation which supports you name change such as a Divorce decree, Marriage license or a court order.
Also sometime in April or May, the DL application will now be available electronically, so you can apply for your new REAL ID at home using any device, just need a valid phone number and email. Organ donor application must be done when you get there and you can also use the DMV's touch screen PC's for the application as well. Just give them your information and they can get you into a REAL ID with the valid documentation.

No, I got a replacement REAL ID DL which keeps your existing expiration date. You do have to take a written or electronic test if you are doing an original REAL ID application or you are renewing before your renewal notice. Application test is a 36 question test with a minimum of 6 incorrect answers (30/36) or less to pass. Early renewal test is a 18 question test with a minimum of 3 incorrect answers (15/18) or less to pass. My brother with an expired license got a new REAL ID with no need for a written or electronic test.

You only have to take one if you are a first time applicant, transferring license from another state or country, or someone who is renewing before their renewal notice.
