If you like to travel, I think being a citizen is more practical. You can stay out of the US for as long as you wish, travel on the US passport, and you have the absolute right of return.
I was a green card holder for almost 20 years, being married to a citizen all these years. Three years ago wen my husband hired an attorney to write his will, it appeared that I have to be a citizen spouse, to be able to receive inheritance if this is a case. I also could not make my own will for our son. So yeah for he legal issues like this, otherwise I was fine with the GC
Very useful information, I became a US citizen this year and this pretty much covered all the questions I had myself and would have saved me a lot of time! I'll recommend it to my friends who are planning the same journey soon.
@Aayush Singh I was eligible after 3 years (married to US citizen) but waited several years after that to actually file. Filing to citizenship took 10 months (2020-2021).
Romanian passport can visit 174 countries without visa. All countries in EU + all Schengen countries not in the EU. But still, Romanians cannot buy apartments on the corner of a table, on a napkin, in a foreign country. Americans can do that. That's a major advantage. Want an apartment (house) in Katanga ? You can buy it. Romanians never even heard about the concept.
Their is no benefit for having dual citizenship because you can always renounce your US citizenship at the consulate that a person is from, you have to declare any foreign money that you make to the IRS regardless.
Very good but #5 is I think wrong. You say "as a US citizen you can live abroad for long as you want without abandoning your green card." Unless things have changed since I became a citizen (20 years ago) you actually SURRENDER your green card the moment you become a citizen. I always thought it strange that you then have NOTHING to prove you are here legally unless you acquire a passport.
I am SERIOUSLY considering to renounce to the american citizenship ( I am a dual citizen and ready to become an expat ).Too much shit going on in America at ALL levels , social , political and economical . And the worst is YET to come...... Time to "leave the premises" , as I like to say. Living in the US is no longer worth. To me at least....P.S. I am not willing to keep paying taxes even after I left AMerica .

If my step daughters that I sponsored have become citizens, it's safe to assume I no longer have any responsibility for them, correct? If I divorced my resident wife and she has remarried, what is my sponsor relationship to her? We were married for 12 years, but she has not tried to become a citizen.
You say family re unification especially for spouses is a priority? As things are right now it is not established in fact. In the case of a long time married, yes a distinction should be made for those that have been married 5, 10, 20, 30 years or more and have already u.s. citizen children or adult children, clearly it is a bonafide marriage. In those cases, there is not a need for any interview at all. Many countries allow a spouse of their citizen to enter with a marriage certificate. The marriage is respected and the family is not distressed. There is no waiting or interview. It is an aknowledgement that their citizen has the right to abode with their spouse. If a background check is deemed necessary, I remind you that gun purchase background checks are instantaneous in many cases. All of those administrative barriers that are now present should not apply to u.s. citizens that have obviously a bonafide marriage with a non citizen. What is obvious? They have children together that are u.s. citizens! Hello? And they have been married many many years already . What are the administrative barriers for? It just wastes government time i.e. salaries, paperwork, needless computer records, etc. etc. etc. Time is money and gov. wastes a lot of it in these cases. Some of these very long time marriages, the non u.s. citizen already has been a LPR (long time permanent resident) for many years, has a u.s. issued marriage certificate from many years ago, and has been out of the u.s. more than a few years with their spouse, and simply want to return with their u.s. citizen spouses, children, and family, to their homeland, but noooooo, they have to go through the 'process' as if they had never been to the states, and don't have a bona fine marriage. So again, the distiction is if one has no u.s. citizen children and has not even been married a year or two. These cases may want to treat differently .
Great video! Very informative and straight to the point. And I have a question, can a US citizen who's living abroad petition a stepchild who's currently over 21 years of age but had a green card before in the past as a minor? A response would be much appreciated.
Biggest disadvantage is you have to file & pay US income taxes (subject to tax treaties) for as long as you are a US citizen even if you decide to leave.
Two misnomers. Green Card holders can sponsor their spouses and unmarried children under 21 and that category is current-so in a way you can call it an immediate relative category. If the category is current there is no wait other then processing time. Second, if your birth country such as Canada has a social security agreement with the US, you can collect benefits in the US or Canada and you do not have to be a US citizen to do so. I ought to know, I am Canadian born but unlike many here from Canada who are simply not interested I decided to become a naturalized citizen in 1993. Hence I am dual.

Good video, chock full of practical pros and cons. I understand this video is geared towards an audience interested in the family, travel, and financial implications of US citizenship. Those are huge ofcourse. It's also worth mentioning a sidebar to consider....do you agree with American ideology/the Constitution/the American position policy in the World? For most, that's an easy choice, a non-issue. Just saying, a point to consider, as renouncing your original country's citizenship and taking an oath of allegiance to the US is not a small thing.
I had a Indian who became a US citizen narrated this news to me re. Green card misuse. An Indian guy, got his US Green Card, due to his brother who became US citizen. Now, this Indian, was least bit interested in working in US & pay taxes. So, every year he used to visit US for 3 months & return back to India. This went on for 3-4 years & 1 fine day, when I arrived in US, the US immigration authorities questioned him, why is he out of US most of the time. He just said " As long as I come back before the deadline date & fulfill my Green Card resident status, there's no issue". The US CBP immediately tore up that US Green card visa on his Indian passport & gave him a 10 yr US visit visa. That Indian guy was stunned! So, anyone thinking of cheating the system, think 10 times.
Just for knowledge, as a non American citizen, when someone become American citizen, does he get only nationality of USA or he also awarded nationality of 1 of 52 states? Hope u understand my question.
Depends on what passport you hold. If it's European or Japanese passport, then you can keep a green card. If you have a third world country passport, then of course it's better to get an American citizenship
Depends on what kind of job you want to work at. Without citizenship there is no possible way to work in law enforcement, wich is the main reason why i want to be us citizen.

What would happen to SS benefits if you decide to retire in another country after working in the US for the most of his/her life as a permanent resident. Would you lose your SS benefits if you ever decide to leave US in order to retire in another country. Thanks in advance!
I believe there is no problem in getting your pension living outside the US but the problem is you have to live in the US as a green card. if not you will loose your GC and charged you as abandoning it. Then your pension is affected once your GC is revoked. In this case, you can no longer enter the US without a valid green card. Better to be a citizen than a green card because you can live outside the US as you can.

Hi, I'm currently on a trip for 6 months August - Feb. (5 months and a day before the 6 month period to be exact) and I'm planning to stay for 1-2 more months (so 7-8 months overall if possible). I'm a permanent resident in the US and already completed my 5 year statutory in 2020. I'm planning to apply for my citizenship when I get back to the US this year. My question is, will my 5 year period reset back to 0 and have to redo my 5 years before I can apply for my citizenship again? I have proof that I'm still a resident and I've been and still living in the same house for 5-6 years, have a US bank account, drivers license and will pay my tax when W2 becomes available. Please advise.
Hello mam can you plz answer my one question that my sister is green card holder in USA .can she move in England because she don't have any family member there with her ? Thanks
Staying in Green Card is a stupid idea when you are retired, because you will likely to loose social security by just over staying in another country. Secondly, American citizens have to file the tax returns for every year but will not be double taxed when you declare your income from another country which is in accordance with the law. Every ten years a Green Card holder will have to renew their Green Card at which time they will have to declare and prove that they are law abiding citizens. So, the issue is true either way. Finally, those countries which allow dual citizenship also allow Americans to enter into other countries using a non-American passport as long as they are not reentering US by using a non-American passport.

Maneesha, I am a green card holder and I have been outside the USA for 5 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's unlikely I will be able to return any time soon, what are my options?
If it ends up being greater than 6 months but less than a year and you can show the border official you had intent to return or could not return due to extreme circumstances (like no flights from your country to the US), you should be ok. However, I would recommend calling an immigration lawyer to talk through all your options. Check out avvo.com (I am not affiliated with them in any way) - if you need a free consult, you can check the box to see which lawyers offer free consults. Good luck!

Side note: my son who received his green card at the same time me and my wife did, just became a US citizen as he did reside in the US for th last 4 years while attending college. Thanks
What do someone need to do when you register and voted in senate and presidency election why you were in you two years green card holder …what do someone need to do why applying for citizenship? Please ur Roku may help somebody
I love watching your video and you very have sweet voice! BIG ❤️
Very educational TH-cam video, subscribed!
I HAVE MY GREEN CARD FOR 30 YEARS , AND RETIREE
WILL I BE ABLE TO RENEW MY GREEN CARD?
What if you live at sea, in international waters?
You did a great job. Keep making more videos!!
Just for knowledge, as a non American citizen, when someone become American citizen, does he get only nationality of USA or he also awarded nationality of 1 of 52 states? Hope u understand my question.
How much income in other country need to taxable in USA for green card person
I GOT MY GREEN CARD VIA MARRIAGE IN JAN 2017, COMPLETED INTERVIEW FOR n400 IN May 2022, still no decision, what should i do
She celebrate her 25 birthday on December 30th 2022
Green card holder relinquish his green card than he has to pay tax on his social security in usa or his born country ?
Depends on what passport you hold. If it's European or Japanese passport, then you can keep a green card. If you have a third world country passport, then of course it's better to get an American citizenship
Depends on what kind of job you want to work at. Without citizenship there is no possible way to work in law enforcement, wich is the main reason why i want to be us citizen.
Hi Mam. We have completed 5 years as permanent residents in MD, United States. Can you be our mentor to guide us through Naturalization process? I don’t know how difficult it is.
Shall my whole family on a US green card should apply for citizenship.??
Mam, what is the difference between USA citizenship and other countries citizenship like UK, Ireland, Australia or new zeland.
Thanks for the great video & the information! I have a question about the social security benefits.
US citizens can also sponsor siblings...although the wait is decades.
Yes, it's a very long wait! For most people, doesn't make sense but it is an option!
Hello ma'am I want to know that my spouse is a us citizen so he have to fill i 485 form or it will come directly to us
Great Video. Thx
Not all Green Card holders r permanent residence ! U need to explain that to your viewers!
Thank you very much Dear Maneesha

I am not sure if the first statement is correct, if you have an employment based green card and then marry a US citizen I believe you can apply after you have been married for 3 years. Or not?
We are foreigners, and have just a son born in the US. My son is eligible for US passport. I am mulling now whether to get the US passport for my son now, instead of waiting till he is 18 years old, when the actual condition then is available to better decide? I am in the opinion that, getting US passport NOW, may become a liability when in fact my son doesn't want it down the road. Pls advise.
I got a match where a guy went to Us for masters in 2014 and he got his citizenship.. he said he got through some confidential research in US .. is it possible?
i have a question. I recently brought my wife to the US. how can she fly back to the US from another country? Does she need her greencard and her Valid Mexican Passport? or something else?
I want to get a passport so I can travel to cambodia I only have a green card do i have to get my citizen to do so?
regarding #7: federal benefits. I was told as green card holder, I cannot claim my social security money, that ive been contributing while working, once i retire. is this true? are there any links or videos that you can recommend where i can read up on it?
That is mostly true. Essentially, there is more criteria as there is with most people.. www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/what-public-benefits-can-green-card-holder-receive.html
False
I am an attorney living in Oregon. I practice in the area of estate planning (Wills and Trusts) but not in Immigration. A married couple I am working with to create a Joint Living Trust told me near the end of the process that the Wife is not a US citizen. Can you direct me to laws, rules or regulations related to whether a foreign national married to a US citizen can inherit property in the US, including real property, and whether a foreign national can serve a the Trustee of such a Trust.
How long is the extension once applied for i-90
If I already have 2 nationalities, and I want to become a us citizen , can I choose which nationality to reject?
That depends on the 2 countries whose nationalities you hold. Every country has different rules. Some people even hold 3 nationalities.
I am a banker in India. One of my client has got the US citizenship. She has a loan in India which is NPA now. What can I do now?
So, a US citizen can not petition for their siblings abroad??
Had a question I recently became a USA citizen my daughter filing is in process since she was 18 can my citizenship help to get her here soon she is only waiting to do medical and interview an answer to this question would be so appreciated thank you so much
Maneesha, I am a green card holder and I have been outside the USA for 5 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Good luck!
@@maneeshamukhi Brilliant. Thank you!
Thank you but sorry the sound is very bad.
I am a married daughter of a US Citizen i filed I-130 In March 2016 for me my son my husband i want to speed up my process of i-130 is it possible? Please Let me know God Bless You
What is the meaning of greencard ? And how many types are they ? Can one person get greencard alone or just for a couple ? Hope you will response to my comment.
What about you though ???
Can you tell us???
There are a lot of interesting ways to get your citizenship besides the classic green card then 5 years then citizenship option. My great-grandfather got his citizenship through an Act of Congress but that's not something that happens very often, lol.
1924 Indian Citizenship Act?
@@marcilk7534 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, 1849 which granted US Citizenship to residents of California if they so desired. My great-grandfather was actually a citizen of Peru but as the young ward of General Vallejo I guess was counted as being eligible.
@@solracer66 Super interesting. I’ll read up about it.
I already have GC, eligible to apply for Citizenship next year.
But I think I'll wait at least 5 to 10 years to see where US economy is heading. Doesn't look good to me...
What does the economy has to do with you becoming us citizens?
Can I sponsor my adopted niece and nephew? I adopted them in the Philippines and my husband also adopted them. I am permanent resident here in USA. I am looking to bring them over.
Thanks for the information
I would like to know if you can represent me to file for citizenship
You're welcome! I am actually not an attorney myself, but I run askellis.com which connects people to experienced immigration lawyers. Take a look at their profiles and feel free to connect with one of them, they would be happy to help you!
Thanks, good video 👍
