I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm an Onimusha fan who wasn't disappointed in this series. Though it took me about three episodes in to actively remember that this series is happening in the Edo period-when all the other games happened during the Sengoku period prior-it still made enough sense. By the end of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, the Genma, their allies and even their god had been defeated. We don't exactly know how many years or decades it's been since anybody's seen or heard of a Genma, and so those chosen by the Oni clan have all but died out or pretty much retired. A lot of media lately like to romanticize that the Edo period is when Japan started to lose its warrior culture and the strength, resilience, and skillfulness in battle that came with that-and this series is no exception. Musashi is the final dreg of a generation that knew what battle-true battle-was like. This is why the younger Samurai with him struggled so much, because their idea of warrior culture is the one that the Edo period would eventually come to adopt and hammer into Japanese society moving forward. Having said that, however, Musashi is past his prime, and his experience only puts him a level above his companions. He struggles too, and he only-just barely-gets by with a relic of the past that's just about as old as he is-if we consider the first time the Oni Gauntlet appeared on Samanosuke's arm. This Onimusha series-to me-pretty much is a farewell to the age of heroes that we fans know about. Peace in the Edo period didn't just kill the storied Samurai warriors of the Sengoku era as they were known, it also killed the potential for future Onimusha that would be formidable enough to stand against a resurgence of the Genma
You just described why I enjoyed this series. I had a feeling if Capcom were to make an Onimusha title it wouldn’t involve Samonoske or any of the others characters we knew. The show gave me the same vibes as the RDR saga. A story being set during the end of an era. Which is what I enjoyed.
Also, a lot of people probably didn't know that in his older years, musashi actually wasn't a healthy man. He smoked numerous things and died of respiratory problems. I think that's why he seemed exhausted a lot of the time in this series and became more dependent on the gauntlet towards the end. But in the games, the gauntlet was used very differently.
I liked this anime onimusha will always be my favorite game I grew up on it they need to make more onimusha games I'll buy it immediately I wouldn't even hesitate to pre-order it

I have to agree, I was a big fan of the Onimusha franchise back in the day and did not like the way this version stepped away from the background of the original story i.e. lack of variation in standard Genma, the whole thing about the Oni Gauntlet being a potentially bad power source that can overtake the wielder, then the whole Sayo "you are human" BS. The music score was quite good, but it generally lacked the mystical scenic gore of the original games locations. I just found the ending a real let down.

Musashi isnt sh1t compared to Samanosuke. I hope the new game doesnt make going Oni a bad thing for the person weilding the gauntlet. Its supposed to be a gift not a curse.
Just for clarification : samnosuke akechi jubei yagyu and soki from dawn of dreams are actually warriors chosen by the gauntlet to slay nobunaga and the Gemma , nobunaga is the reason that samnosuke takes up his fight because the woman he cares for is kidnapped by the Gemma for her to be a bride (or sacrifice) to nobunaga once he is resurrected (he died from an arrow through the throat in the beginning of onimusha 1. Now musashi is only in the blade warriors game and he is not a true onimusha as in he is not blessed by the oni spirits or the gauntlet. In priority the 4 things that bothered me the most. 1. The ending is ridiculous with the wooden stick, I mean come on that is not even feasible in the game where he is way more powerful. 2. There was a slight bit of cinematic abuse and I really hate it in anime due to DBZ Frieza saga trauma as a kid when the reset the season twice after finishing their fight. 3. Their voices did not match their mouths quite a bit, that was a little immersion breaking at times. 4. Other than that I am a huge Onimusha fanboy and have played all the games more than once. I really liked the show, it really changed a lot of the universe but it felt good to watch.
Give a bit more context on the final scene, it's a callback to the famous duel of Musashi and Kojiro on Ganryu Island, where Musashi used a carved wooden oar of a boat. It has longer reach than Kojiro's "clothesline" sword that is already long. Musashi did beat Kojiro with it because of the reach advantage. Even Musashi final line of "You are already defeated!" is a callback on the very first thing Musashi said to Kojiro when Kojiro threw away the sheath of his sword, because Musashi believes the life of a sword is protected by the sheath (it protects the blade from rusting and chipping, thus prolonging the "life" of the sword) At the start of the clip where Kojiro was saying "I have been waiting", is also a callback since on the actual historical match, Musashi deliberately arrived late to remove Kojiro's composure.

@@rodri.gomez09 Cool bit of history, but you're taking for granted that this anime is in the awkward space of "Eastern history/mythology adapted for Western entertainment": most of the audience for this will have no clue about the historical reference. Add that to the strange use of the Onimusha license and some arbitrarily chosen elements of the games (the gauntlet, the "Onimusha form", the skeleton genma) that are either partially or entirely removed from their context in the game series, and I expect a lot of people will have a lot of misconceptions about this anime. One favorable interpretation that comes to mind, though, could be that the writers see the Onimusha brand as being defined by "fantastical stories based on real events", and thus the only goal was to create a fictitious story utilizing some of the visual iconography of the games while referencing historical events for the backbone of the story. Although u found it awkward, i kinda love the way the animators put the last scene cause it is pretty accurate in japanese historical and make it more cooler instead fighting only with swords. I think they not entirely removed the game context, when the music starts, i knew that the director its actually matching the synergy of game series to the anime series.
i also asked my friend who watch this anime, they said its actually lit and very touching for some scene (Samurai dies*), some of my friends even curious and search about the actual event of miyamoto musashi vs sasaki kojiro.
Many people prolly dont like it, but for me this series is actually pretty good.
@@rodri.gomez09 Lol I need culture? It's just a cartoon ,You're making assumptions about me and have no idea of my background.
I used to play the onimusha games back in my adolescence.
The fact that you took my comment that serious says a lot about you.
It's an animated Japanese show based on a video game series created by Capcom, it's not real, relax buddy no need to be a jerk.
I recommend being a more tactful person before giving your opinion.
@@2rockk Yeah I enjoyed as well as actually enjoyed as Onimusha fan myself who played the games and Blade Warriors, I really like how they match tone here despite it being different for some areas, and them using Toshiro Mifune model for Musashi is nice call back to the original trilogy using actual J Actor models for the protagonists like Takeshi Kaneshiro as Samanosuke and Yasuke Matsuda(R.I.P.🙏) as Jubei, but yes the way the dialogue and how the characters interact with each other was exactly how an Onimusha game does it
Onimusha is better than echo and the she hulk disasters courtesy of the m she u
