I have not seen a better review of this guitar on YT, You really put her through her paces and did a great job of showing us just what this little guitar can do! Thank you!
I have the P-90 version of this guitar, and it's everything he says and more. For the ridiculously low asking price, you get one heck of a guitar. Not so many of the P-90 models were made, but definitely worth seeking out.
hi Robert. Very nice review of this guitar, very useful and complete. I'm considering upgrading to this guitar as I currently have an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Goth which is nice but this one gives full set of new possibilities. I'm not an expert, just a 52 years old person who decided to buy my first guitar 3 years ago, but love to practice and get some time for me. thanks again
I accidentally bought a case for this guitar thinking it was a larger (355) or (335) but now that Iv'e seen this guitar hmm.. maybe I will get one. thanks for the great video.
I have a 68 Japanese Tele Squire, early 70's Ovation, and a few asst others. Wanted a semi-hollow guitar, my whole life. Went to a Guitar Center to buy an Epiphone Wildcat (w/Bigsby). Great looking, but hated everything about it. On way out saw the ES-339, played it for the heck of it. They had a Red, Sunburst and a Black one. Asked the salesman if any others in the back, brought another sunburst (like Roberts) Finally "Golilocks'ed" it (just right), but it had a little fretting issue on fret 3,4 on the high strings. GC would not set it up free, since it was on sale. I took oit to my luthier, neck was sligthtly bowed. He did a total set up ($100), is now my favorite quitar. The smaller body (than a 335, or Casino) makes it very comfortable to hold. Tele is jealous. If you get one, take it to a GOOD guitar person, spend the extra $100 for a pro set up, you'll be glad you did and happy.
While I checking out a new guitar yesterday and I noticed two Epipy 339's close by. I looked them over and I was impressed with their appearance and workmanship. I didn't play but as soon as I got home I began watching the various reviews on the 339. Your review was the first one I watched because I respect you opinion.
This is a proper video. Communication, production value, performance, and showcase of the guitar are above board. This is precisely what I was looking for to get an idea of what the guitar can do. Many thanks for these efforts!
I have the Epi 335 Pro which is essentially the same guitar only bigger. But I'm really not keen on the pickups.I wish they had put in Probuckers which sound much better to me.Anyway I do like the size of the 339 so I went out and bought the model with P90 Pro pickups and it sounds fantastic.
I have a Casino Coupe, itching to get a ES-339 (Epiphone) now, found another blond for $488US offer, this on the newer "inspired by Gibson" version. Sure sounds great in your hands!
Great review. No high gain/can't hear a difference crap. Love where you've set your gain stage so we can hear what the difference was between the settings.
Robert, nice demo. Thanks for playing some jazz along with the clean and dirty tones, it highlights the guitar's versatility. These are great players and you can't beat the price.
I was on the market for an inexpensive semi-hollow. I narrowed my decision to this Epiphone es-339 and the Ibanez AM93. Both nice guitars but the Ibanez seemed better build and had a more balance tone! Maybe it was down to the Pickups(Custom 58 pickups modeled after the famous Super 58 from the 80s) which I found a lot better sounding than the ones on the Epi. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those two but if you are on the market for such a guitar you should at least check out the Ibanez. Nice demo as always BTW!
matthias pandora it performs similar bc of the solid center block like the 335 - so it’s a marriage of a 335 and les Paul . A Es 335 of course was a great innovation bc it merged a hollow body with the solid body les Paul - that was ted McCarty’s idea . A 339 is a lot newer of course but was created with the same ideas but just in a smaller package to fit comfortably for any player
Great review and demonstration of various styles and sounds . I have this same model in the same finish , bought it new in 2014 . I liked the feel of the neck and the sound of the pickups , that's what sold me on this guitar from the beginning. Later , I bought the P90 version when that became available , it's a very nice sounding instrument as well .
So I bought one of these about a year ago. I can't intonate the bastard. I even flipped the saddle around on the G string to get a bit more travel. I'm torn between taking it in and backing over it with the Charger. It has great tone so perhaps I'll leave it plugged in as I back over it. Yes I think I'll back over it.
Hi, I need some help deciding what guitar to buy next. I don't seem to be able to pick between Epiphone ES339 pro & PRS SE Santana Standard. Which one do u think is better?!
Your demo sounds very good. I previously sold mine, because I could get a suitable sound from the cheap amp I was using at that time. I might have another try again.
Hi, Greta rewiew. I Havel a question: as first Electro guitar would you suggest this one or the squier classic vibe50's telecaster? I don't play metal or jazz, and I like vintage sounds. Thanks to everyone Williams answer
What really is the difference with a semi-hollow body and a solid electric? I really am interested in the look of the semi ie loving acoustic and considering perhaps purchasing.
+Jbeliski a solid has nothing hollow... it's solid! A semi hollow usually has solid a block of wood running through the center of the body, but hollow "wings" on the sides (where the F holes are).
+Jbeliski There's a little difference in the sound! If you play a solid mahogany LP you get a darker tone! If you play a semihollow maple 335 you get a brighter tone plus there's the acoustic resonance inside the semihollow body that get's amplified on the pickups!
Hard to describe the difference, wider and airy-er perhaps, the air inside does something but I cant find a way to describe it. I have p90s which came on my first and only semi hollow, so not sure how much of that was due to p90s.
Beautiful presentation. In addition to how well you play, I could immediately tell the humbuckers from the tapped coils (even in mid position). As a Chicago fan, I'm considering a model with the option of utilizing a bridge single oil and a neck humbucker a la Terry Kath (whose Telecaster had a Gibson neck humbucker retrofit). This 339 is an easy contender. Incidentally, where are your roots? I like your accent, but I can't immediately place it.
Come to think of it.... Would it be possible for you to do the same kind of review on the Epi ES 335 Limited Pro? I think that there would be a lot of people who would very much like to see you do one....
Yes...It has Humbuckers. Just run it through a Big Muff and you're good. Anything with Humbuckers will work for heavy style of music. You just might get some feedback because it is semi hollow.
It's everything Robert displays in terms of tone ...I really like his demos.... when he noodles, I learn stuff. I bought one used at a great price...swapped in a TUSQ nut to help mine stay in tune ( I was tempted to blame the tuners but youtube wisdom said it's usually the nut...was easier to go that route). I eventually had to swap out the stock push-pull pots which broke a few months after I got it...I'm not a luthier so there was a lot of cussing. Great guitar tho..and yeah..like Regend said... the humbuckers will take good care of you when you go heavy.
I bought one of these when they first came out. Sold it within a few months. I didn't like it at all. Just personal preferences I guess. The neck was way too thick for my taste. The smaller body combined with the 'heavy' neck made it awkward to balance on the lap. Also I found it quite heavy. Well maybe I should have given it some more time. But a thick neck never gets slimmer.. Soon after I bought an older Korean made Samick 335-copy. Thinner neck, more balanced feel, better finish. Just lacking the coil splitting option. In hindsight, switching the stock strings for flat wound strings probably didn't do the guitar much good. Since I switched to nickel round wounds on the Samick there is just so much more guitar in it! You can still get a warm jazzy sound by dailing down the tone a bit. Now thinking how these strings would have sounded with a split coil option...
Thanks Robert for such great videos. I love your playing. I like to check out your lessons, but I end up playing along with them and doing harmony parts. I have Les Pauls real & fake, PRS, Strats and Teles, but no semi hollows. Love the tone!
Robert if your still reading your comments i would be curious to know how you got the fretboard so dark, i looks almost ebony on the video. curios to know if its rosewood or Pau Ferro as they are now.
Maybe my next guitar.. what's nice is that guitar sounds and looks cool for any style. Blues, rock, jazz... a fender strat doesn't look typical for a jazz player to use, but this guitar looks very jazz but also you could use for rock and it would look very cool and retro
I have seen the Gibson 339 for $2,100-$2,500 a difference of close to $2,000. You mentioned the Gibson is a better guitar is it worth $2,000 more in your opinion?Earle
That's completely depending on the financial situation and the motivation of the buyer. If I had that money to spend, absolutely the Gibson is much better. If you want a good guitar for much less, the Epiphone is the obvious choice. The feel of the Gibson is in my opinion much better too. This one feels and sounds like a good cheap guitar. The Gibson feels and sounds like a fantastic guitar. Is that worth $2,000? Only you can answer that question.
I have owned an ebony 339 pro for close to a year and honestly love and hate it. Nice to hold, look at and some great sounds but impossible to keep in tune and I use a strobe tuner
I know this is an old comment, but that should not be happening even in low end epiphones. You probably got some lemon tuners, should have returned it if possible or replace the tuners.
@@freesanatani914 hi there, the Epiphone I had, was purchased new and was the best out of several that inspected. I was not happy with the action after the store set the guitar up, so I showed it to a Luther that was about to start working on an old guitar of mine. The Luther showed my that there was a bump in the neck that started around the 9th fret from memory. He mentioned it to the sales rep.for Epiphone and Gibson in Melbourne. I took it back to the store and they reluctantly sent it to Gibson melbourne. the frets were dressed resolving that issue but the runners were not good. The store's attitude towards all my complaints was that it wasn't an expensive guitar. When considering the cost of tunners and that when later selling it I would not recoup that money, I decided to sell and then purchase a Yamaha Pacific 611FHM, which has been great
I’ve been playing guitar for nearly 2 years now and am looking for a more ‘intermediate’ guitar. Would you say this would be a suitable guitar? I don’t want a guitar that’s going to break the bank, but I don’t mind shelling out a little extra if it means I’m getting a solid instrument. I’d say the max price for me would be £500. Thanks.
I have one and love it. If you like the hollows and semi-hollows, also give the Gretsch Streamliner range a look. It's roughly the same price point. Mr. Renman's advice is spot on - go and play everything in your budget. You'll find 'the one' that makes you WANT to sit and play.
Robert good answer I agree and thanks for being right on point. Your videos are great and you do inspire me to practice practice practice thanks againEarle
Jake Thomson pretty good. I have small hands and I find this slightly more comfortable than the Les Paul, and easier to reach the upper frets. With that said I still might get the les paul
i want to buy one of these, you play great Robert, thank for the review.

Hey Robert love your videos!! I guess I have similar taste haha, I own a Strat Deluxe like yours, and I'm planning to buy a Hagstrom Viking....but I'm deciding between this Epiphone ES339 and the Hagstrom....What would you think it's better? (if that can be said!) I always find your video reviews useful!! THANKS!!!
9 ปีที่แล้ว
+mauricio méndez I'm absolutely happy with my Viking, if that's any help :) but I'd also like to hear what Robert thinks about that comparison.
I just picked one up to replace my epi hot rod les paul. [I can not take the 10 pounds anymore] I really dug it except one thing. Why dose Epiphone use TINY frets? Like .045 tall! So now I have to break put that extra set of jescar .057 frets and do the nasty. Very cool guitar......way small frets.....for me.
I have this very same guitar colour and all. I love it.. i play it through a Fender hotrod deluxe 3 not as well as you mind but mates who do who gig and play tele,s always love this guitar. the coil tap thing works well. i`m not ready to spend big money on a Fender or gibson with this why bother
I'm leaning towards this as my next guitar. I currently only have my Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster for an electric. I've owned a Les Paul Studio and a few other electrics with humbuckers, but I've fallen in love with my Deluxe Strat for many reasons- but it's the neck and playability I love the most. How does this ES-339 compare neck-wise with an American Deluxe Stratocaster?
+Robert Renman Okay thank you! The back of the neck on my Strat is just so slick and my hand glides up and down with no effort. With other guitars I've owned, it's been the opposite- almost like the paint job is making me work against the neck. Does that make sense? It's tough to put to words.
+billyclub56 Hummm... I won't lie; the thought of sanding down the back of the neck intimidates me a bit. I was totally used to the non gloss finish of my Les Paul Studio back in the day. It wasn't until I played that American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster in the store that I realized just how much easier and satisfying the neck differences were. But I play blues, and I need at least one good guitar with dual humbuckers. I'm also considering a Fender Jaguar HH but I'd have to play it and get a feel for the neck first.
So this is a delightful guitar. I have this. as my #3. It is easy to play really easy to play and still yielding good tone. Should you really desire a single coil tone, it will come close but alas will fail to give you the direct drive tone. Humbuckers have a Lot of resonance that have their own purpose. Nonetheless this is a great guitar no matter $!
I own expensive guitars, from luthiers, PRS, ameican stratocaster etc. By following the route, a Gibson should fit right in for a hollowbody in my arsenal but why? Epiphone has the right pedigree in hollows. Great guitars at great prices. Good enough for the beatles, good enough for me
I have not seen a better review of this guitar on YT, You really put her through her paces and did a great job of showing us just what this little guitar can do! Thank you!

Great review, Robert. I've been looking at these for about a year now. Might as well pull the trigger.

Which is a better guitar in everybody's opinion , this or the newer inspired by Gibson ?
I bought one of these when they first came out. Sold it within a few months. I didn't like it at all. Just personal preferences I guess. The neck was way too thick for my taste. Split coils are an easy mod your guitar tech can do for $30 plus parts, it's well worth it for additional tones

Robert any reason other than cost you chose the Epiphone over the Gibson Es 339? Great video Bye the wayEarle
Yeah, it's way cheaper. The Gibson is of course better.
Because the Gibson costs $3,825 and the Epiphone $469.

Thanks.
Absolutely. However, the best thing is always to go to a well equipped store and try many different guitars to see what you like best.
I have one and love it. If you like the hollows and semi-hollows, also give the Gretsch Streamliner range a look. It's roughly the same price point. Mr. Renman's advice is spot on - go and play everything in your budget. You'll find 'the one' that makes you WANT to sit and play.
Robert, how would you compare this to your Hagstrom Viking? Thanks in advance
Viking is better.
Haha I see... Thank you for being that honest and for your awesome videos
Flawless review. Must subscribe immediately
What is difference between Es 335 and Es 339 in respect of sound ?
335 is a bit more "acoustic" sounding because of the size difference
Wonderfull played and a great Demo!!!
WOW;THANKS FOR the Demo!!!Nice Guitar,i thing i will get such a modell ,Es339pro.More es is not need!!!
Just saw it - great sound - great demo - thanks!
would it be possible to replace stock pickups with gibson 57 classics?
+jiimmer beamer Absolutely.
+jiimmer beamer Not sure why you would want to spend that kind of money. Sounds GREAT as is. I'd rather put the money towards a good Amp. Cheers.
Good job.. some nice sounds. I want one now
Robert good answer I agree and thanks for being right on point. Your videos are great and you do inspire me to practice practice practice thanks againEarle
How is it for small hands
Jake Thomson pretty good. I have small hands and I find this slightly more comfortable than the Les Paul, and easier to reach the upper frets. With that said I still might get the les paul
thanks for playing stella by starlight whit this guitar!
For example: What do you recommend for acoustic sound?
John Austin an acoustic guitar
When you rolled the tone down, it sounded like butter
Salted or unsalted? Or whipped?
@@Dolphinstreets Like smooth, smooth unsalted whipped butter. Cool demo, mate!
Cool review Robert. I own 4 Epiphone's and this one is next on my list.
I like the guitar , but what I really enjoy is that YOU LOVE PLAYING IT! ...priceless.
Thanks very much!
i want to buy one of these, you play great Robert, thank for the review.
Hey Robert love your videos!! I guess I have similar taste haha, I own a Strat Deluxe like yours, and I'm planning to buy a Hagstrom Viking....but I'm deciding between this Epiphone ES339 and the Hagstrom....What would you think it's better? (if that can be said!)
I always find your video reviews useful!! THANKS!!!
+mauricio méndez I'm absolutely happy with my Viking, if that's any help :) but I'd also like to hear what Robert thinks about that comparison.
I already bought the hagstrom! It's amazing!
c
I just picked one up to replace my epi hot rod les paul. [I can not take the 10 pounds anymore] I really dug it except one thing. Why dose Epiphone use TINY frets? Like .045 tall! So now I have to break put that extra set of jescar .057 frets and do the nasty. Very cool guitar......way small frets.....for me.
I have this very same guitar colour and all. I love it.. i play it through a Fender hotrod deluxe 3 not as well as you mind but mates who do who gig and play tele,s always love this guitar. the coil tap thing works well. i`m not ready to spend big money on a Fender or gibson with this why bother
nick williams all eq's at noon?
I'm leaning towards this as my next guitar. I currently only have my Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster for an electric. I've owned a Les Paul Studio and a few other electrics with humbuckers, but I've fallen in love with my Deluxe Strat for many reasons- but it's the neck and playability I love the most.
How does this ES-339 compare neck-wise with an American Deluxe Stratocaster?
+00xanawolf00 Very different. The 339 neck is rounder/fatter but not very wide.
+Robert Renman Okay thank you! The back of the neck on my Strat is just so slick and my hand glides up and down with no effort. With other guitars I've owned, it's been the opposite- almost like the paint job is making me work against the neck.
Does that make sense? It's tough to put to words.
+00xanawolf00 Yeah this neck as a glossy finish, not matte. Some might find such neck sticky, but I don't mind it.
+00xanawolf00 tape off neck at nut,
Fine fine sandpaper, knock off laquer,
Smooth as glass
Nice around 5.50-6.30!
I own expensive guitars, from luthiers, PRS, ameican stratocaster etc. By following the route, a Gibson should fit right in for a hollowbody in my arsenal but why? Epiphone has the right pedigree in hollows. Great guitars at great prices. Good enough for the beatles, good enough for me
Martin, keep in mind that Epiphone was an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT company in the 50's and 60's. For starters, everything was made here.
Just picked one up!
Dang this epi sounds awesome
man it sounds gorgeous
