    I’ve had personal rings in my life since 1990 and will continue - even when they’re not my EDC. I love my covers, accessories and punching all kinds of paper to fit 😊 TFS Job 🧡

    As far as the rings getting in the way, bound books pretty much never lie flat, but with a ring binder, if you need to, you can always quickly unclip the ring metal and remove an single sheet for flat writing. You cannot easily do this with spiral, comb, glued, or sewn bindings.

    I have always been ride or die for rings, but I feel like I got influenced into bound books for such a long time! I have lately realized that rings give me the flexibility to change and adjust that bound books just don’t. I also get so bored with my planning systems, and rings help me just swap out my inserts to keep things fresh, without having to throw out the whole dang book!

    My daily is a TN, but after finding a lovely 90s Filofax at a thrift store, I'm establishing that as a Commonplace/Household Book for my fiance and I. Rings are a perfect match for that kind of way to keep important but interchangeable life information.

    Here I am in November 2023 watching ring planner videos because I just moved back to them. Personal rings were my first ever planner and I’m back. Just pen and tombow. I got overwhelmed with all the planner things. Rings allow me to add or take away and it’s easy to be no or low spend for next year but still be able to flex and adapt my needs. I’m seeing quite a few people moving that way presently.

    i currently am using one ring binder for my weekly planning, journaling, and memory keeping! i only use blank inserts and make my own spreads which made my life easier tbh since i'm very particular as to how i like to layout my stuff. the rings are a hassle yes but i've worked around it and i love that my system is flexible ✨

    I can't go back down the rabbit hole of needing all the punched pages, the extras, finding or printing your own pages, and also needing another hole punch! I recently moved and donated EVERYTHING! Now I use a flat laying Dollartree planner which has a fantastic simple week on two pages layout. The paper is thin like Hibonichi paper, but takes fountain pen and watercolor well with no bleed through. I get the tiny one (about 3.5 x 6). It's just simple and easy right now. I hope to get a Filofax one day tho...I love the Mauldin. One day. ❤❤❤

    You already know I love my 5th anniversary PLOTTER 😂 I never thought I'd get into rings, either, but I really enjoy the customization aspect of it. Unlike other journals where I like to flip back (memory-keeping, ephemera, art, etc.), I like that I can archive the past weekly pages for personal planning and then move onto the next month. Feels refreshing and keeps things light!

    I've been thinking the same thing this year as I am in my ring era. I've got an a5 with 35mm rings that literally has everything I need; even journaling. It is heavy though. I can't get past how versatile they are. I really love Sterling Ink's a5 notebook/planners and have a few. However, I know if I write information inside and need to refer to it again next year, I'm not going to want to pull the book off the shelf.

    I’ve been in a lot of planners over the years and each one has their ups and downs. My recent favorite is a half letter discbound because I’m over 50 now and need more white space so I can see better and it’s much lighter than an A5 size with a leather cover. I also just can’t stand any ring gap and obsess over fixing it lol Best thing about discs is that it folds in itself like a spiral notebook and you can customize the whole thing even the cover. I have tote full of standard travelers notebooks but I found that I love putting in my own inserts and with half letter it’s just one middle cut through the trimmer. Who knows though I might hear my travelers notebook calling lol

      Oh, the trauma of the Fifties!! I have used green ink all of my life. I could only use black at work, but I was using green from high school in my private life. Then I hit 52. No more green ink for me! I just can't see it very well. If it's a dark enough green that I can see, it might as well be black, because it's cheaper.

    I recently moved my planner system to a Regular size TN, and I love it. It’s taken a little to get used to the change but it’s been really fun. Part of the appeal was consolidating everything into one notebook, only I’ve run into a problem, I don’t like it all together! Lol! So I’m looking to go back to keeping a separate Commonplace journal and the Plotter Journal is so pretty! Pricey but very pretty. I also like the idea of not worrying about filling a whole notebook or the stress of spilling over within a year, just using as many or as few pages as I need. I’ve been keeping a Book Journal since I was 12, so for 20 years and I think it might be time for an exceptionally beautiful journal.

    When I write, I turn the notebook/page in 90° angle with my desk side 😂 so rings were never in my way ... But the thing I cannot get passed when it comes to most ring planners is the fact that when it's open, the paper page is ridiculously small compared to the whole cover situation you see around it! I hate that ! 😂😂😂 It is somewhat solved with really narrow covers and small rings or with clear pvc covers which give the illusion that the cover is not that excessive.... (Also pvc covers solve the other issue on how to store the papers! I just leave them in and buy a new cover! 😅)
    Having said all these, I never used a ring planner (for planning or other purpose) consistently for more than a couple of weeks! Occasionally though I may still try to! 😂❤
    Currently I'm eyeing the Roroma classic DaVinci bible size in the narrow format---I saw it in person in Japan and it looks super cool and vintagy...!

    I never really got into ring planners, though I can understand how they can be very useful for functional planning. I actually have a mini ring planner that was gifted to me for my 8th/9th birthday (I don't know what they were thinking by giving a kid a planner, but my present self really likes it) and I've been trying to use it for years now, but I just can't get used to it, which is super sad.

    TOTALLY RELEVANT!! LOL I've just started using 2 ring planners. I've been in a TN since 2015 and it's been great, but my needs have been shifting and I find that the ring planners are a better fit for me now! And I love PLOTTER b/c of the smaller rings--SO helpful for us lefties!

  • @itsacarolbthing5221

    I've used ring planners for almost forty years. I had a years break in 2008, when I split from my partner and couldn't think further than fifteen minutes ahead, and I used an A6 Moleskine for One Book July a couple of years ago. I went back to my normal rings after ten days. My planners are Filofax, Franklin Covey and VDS. I couldn't manage with the tiny rings as in the Plotter binders.
    By the way, people aren't 'using rings *again*'. We never stopped.

  • @Bradleyjon
    @Bradleyjon ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love the idea of smaller rings, feel like it forces you to be more selective in what you put in your planner. Therefore on carrying around what you need instead of bulking your planner out unnecessarily.

    I just purchased a Filofax personal binder for my journal/sketchbook/planner to experiment with. I have been using the TN system up to this point but I like the versatility of the ring binder. On a personal note about ring binders, growing up I always liked them and I always thought they were cool, but I could never really afford the nice leather ones. I have always had this "attraction" to the Filofax system but just never got one, till now. My opinions may change and I may move back.

  • @Flatability
    @Flatability ปีที่แล้ว

    Are ring planners still relevant in 2023? Absolutely. In fact, I have over 100 of them. I'm mainly using a pair of Filofax "Guildford Mini Extra Slims" (almost the same size as the Plotter Mini 5, with 11mm rings, and the smallest Filofax ever made). By the way, I like your chatty style, which makes a great video.

  • @LewisLittle66
    @LewisLittle66 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the structure of a ring binder, because of the flexibility of moving and adding in pages, but I found it impossible to find refills of the paper quality that I wanted; I bought a regular dotted journal with the intention of removing the pages, punching them and inserting them into the binder. But then I thought, why go to all that expense and effort, so I ended up just using the journal as-is. I do, however, still use ring binders for my commonplace books, where re-ordering pages is more important than it is in my planners (and paper quality is less important).

    Rings aren’t for me for many reasons but I think they can be useful. I LOVE the slimness of Plotters but hate their lack of selection for their USA based site. Most of their new releases you have to get at like pen shows etc.

    I’m a lefty and rings bother me when writing. And when they are small, then I run out of pages too quickly. I used to use rings exclusively, but now it’s pretty rare when I pull any of them out to use.

    I recently got a ringed planner (filofax) for work things, after filling up a few bound notebooks (bullet journalling)! It's fun to experiment with something new and I think in the long run it'll help save time/space because I tend to do the same 4-day layout every week, designing project templates, recurring checklists, and archiving old papers.

  • @meghan9436
    @meghan9436 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm 6:31 in, and I'll have to pick this up when I finish work today. But, I will say that I never got into ring systems. But, I did learn about the Filofax during this planning journey.
    I started in this community through Hobonichi in 2012. By 2016, I discovered the Traveler's Notebook and I got in on that through Baum Kuchen. Love the Pan Am collection so much! I've also used the Hobonichi A5, and the Midori MD notebooks also in the A5. As much as I love all these products, I keep gravitating to the Traveler's Notebook because they are a nice in between size, particularly for art journaling. They are also great to house maps or brochures that you might get during your travels, and I have a feeling that's what Designphil had in mind when they were designing them originally.
    If you went to grade school in Canada or the United States, chances are that you received one of those school planners with the holographic covers. I got into those a lot, but I wish I had saved them! I like the idea of companies reissuing products from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s for those of us who enjoyed the products at the time, and for newer generations of people who missed out on them. In my Japan travels, I did find some planners dated back to 2002-2003 at Book-Off, and I picked them up like a crazy person! Maybe with enough time, I can actually use those planners because the calendars do eventually repeat themselves.

    I recently got my A5 Plotter and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying every bits of it! I usually have random but relatively constructed thoughts flying around and I found it super useful to just quickly jot it down on the page without having to worry about structure. I can always reorganize the pages and categorize them however whenever I want.
    Btw I found the plotter paper to be a bit too “slippery” for some of my fountain pens, not sure if you have the same issue?
    Lovely nails btw!

    It's interesting because when I first got into planning I had a mindset that saw ringed planners as exclusively planners and TRC TN as a travel or everyday journal. Unfortunately I quickly fell out of love with rings for 2 reasons:I'm a southpaw and felt compelled to remove the inserts when in use and the experience simply wasn't enjoyable in comparison to a TN insert or bound book. The second reason was I don't like the archiving loose pages vs a bound insert or book (I did use a Franklin archival binder but it just fell flat I don't find myself flipping through or referencing my ringed insert as I do with myTN inserts). I did try disks for a short while and found that to be a more enjoyable experience but again the archiving of loose papers just isn't my jam.🤷‍♀ Now I use TRC for planning and I love seeing inserts lined on a shelf or stored in an archival binder for each year.😍 Plotter is so thoughtfully designed and perfect to track long or short term projects but my life is slow paced; I don't feel I'd use it to its full potential though I do admire from afar lol. I wish my husband were interested in planners because I think plotter would be a perfect task manager for him and he would appreciate the compact nature of the design but alas, he's not interested 🥲

    I love the flexibility that comes with a disc-bound or ring-bound setup, but I feel like the book-bound setups are "trending," so planner-obsessed people jump on anything trending. There are pros and cons to every system, and it takes awhile to work that out to meet your individual needs. I used my disc-bound set up for a decade, but I'm moving into a standard TN in Sep. because my disc-bound setup with the fancy covers has become too bulky to be portable. I did purchase the undated monthly and weekly inserts, though, just in case I change my mind (again)!
