      @@Jordanpgates1 I did some digging and this is what I found
      www.platformer.news/p/the-withering-email-that-got-an-ethical
      The review model of Google certainly seems sketchy as it opens doors to censorship. But her demand of revealing the identity of the people who reviewed her paper is really bizarre, specially considering that she comes from a background of ethics. The email says that the paper omitted certain aspects of the ongoing research and models so I really don't know what to think of it. Google has done a similar thing in the past where they fired another employee over a research paper which was controversial so there seems to be a pattern.
      I guess they could have an independent peer review board review the paper and decide whether it meets the standards of being published.

    • @saurabhraj19
      @saurabhraj19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Sid00077 The fk is the paper supposed to do? If you go over it in the second section it says that since the model doesn't understand the "new" language and words used by small percentage of US population aka the new pronouns and stuff that some people are using its bad to use large language models.
      The funny thing is it's not supposed to understand language anyways, these idiots were saying invent something new entirely because people might get hurt 😂😂. Poorly written paper with idiotic and embarrassing suggestions and conclusions.

    • @Sid00077
      @Sid00077 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@saurabhraj19 There are so many things that are confusing and Dr. Gebru's email seems to imply that she was being oppressed by the privledged higher-ups. I believe she was specifically talking about black, Latin and female. From another report, they seem to higher more Asians and Caucasians but I dont know to what extent its discriminatory. Is the low number attributed to the fact that more Asians and Caucasians study programming versus people of other ethnic background and therefore have more people applying? Possible.
      Both sides can settle this by simply having an independent review team go through the paper. A bad paper is a bad paper so there is no way around it, regardless of who authored it. If they deem that the paper wasn't up to the standard of contemporary research then I just dont see any fuss.

    14% of people at Google are women... Well that doesn't mean much when we have no details about what percentage of applicants are women.
    Also, what percentage of trash collectors or brick layers are women? Why isn't any researcher trying to counter the imbalance in those industries too? Oh and before anyone says employment in tech should represent the demographics of their userbase, don't tell me women do not generate trash nor live in brick buildings?

    • @AngelBumblebee
      @AngelBumblebee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Women have always been involved in tech, but had been barred from manual labour for the majority of modern history. It makes sense that this trend would continue, especially as our society is still so heavily gendered when it comes to work.
      Also, I hope you’re keeping this same energy and actively trying to make disposal services and manual labour an inclusive place to work for women. Because if you’re not then you’re just trying to derail this conversation without adding anything of value.

    • @mljh11
      @mljh11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AngelBumblebee I don't quite get your point. You're saying you're fine with women being barred from manual labor due to traditional gender perceptions? Hasn't feminism been telling us that women are exactly the same as men, and should be treated as such - if so then why aren't they fighting for more female representation among janitors and garbage disposal workers?
      I'm happy to tell your I'm not expending any energy to artificially inflate women's employment anywhere. Scandinavia has proven that women still gravitate towards some sectors over others, even with the benefit of the most equitable societal conditions on earth. This puts paid to the feminist notion that gender roles are imposed upon women by some evil patriarchy.

    1. The AI model in question cost a lot of power, which is not friendly to environment
    2. The research will cost a lot of money, which means it will benefit the rich (or easily monopolized)
    3. The model will learn all the racist and sexist things people say on the internet and think it’s normal language. It will also not be able to learn what’s not on the internet
    4. The model doesn’t actually understand language, it’s just making calculation base on previous data, so this may be the wrong path for future A.I. research
    5. The language the model produce is very similar to human, so it can easily be used to spread misinformation

      Things like this must be thought of like tools; you can use a tool to make your life easier and also make it easier for you to hurt somebody else. Some tools are better at inflicting hurt, some are better at making life better but whichever it is, you have to be cautious.

    This is NOT the full story. She was a malicious presence at Google. Just read what her ex-colleagues have to say about working with her:
    "Timnit, if you are reading this: former colleague here. You were wondering
    > Am I radioactive? Why did nobody talk to me about this?
    Yes, you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly it. Anything that is not singing you or your work praises gets turned into an attack on you and all possible minorities immediately and, possibly, into big drama. Hence, nobody dares give you honest negative feedback. Ain't got time to deal with this in addition to doing everything else a researcher does.
    I hope this whole episode will make you more receptive to negative constructive feedback, not less. I wish you all the best in future endeavors."
    "Another ex-colleague here. I was not going to participate in the discussions but your post made me realize objective truth should come out. I do believe she actually thinks she is making the world a better place but in reality any interaction with her has been incredibly stressful having to carefully weigh every move made in her presence. When this blows over her departure will be a net positive for the morale of the company.
    To give a concrete example of what it is like to work with her I will describe something that has not come to light until now. When GPT-3 came out a discussion thread was started in the brain papers group. Timnit was one of the first to respond with some of her thoughts. Almost immediately a very high profile figure has also also responded with his thoughts. He is not Lecun or Dean but he is close. What followed for the rest of the thread was Timnit blasting privileged white men for ignoring the voice of a black woman. Nevermind that it was painfully clear they were writing their responses at the same time. Message after message she would blast both the high profile figure and anyone who so much as implied it could have been a misunderstanding. In the end everyone just bent over backwards apologizing to her and the thread was abandoned along with the whole brain papers group which was relatively active up to that point. She has effectively robbed thousands of colleagues of insights into their seniors thought process just because she didn't immediately get attention.
    The thread is still up there so any googler can see it for themselves and verify I am telling the truth."
    To see how she worked at Google, just take a look at the GPT-3 threads. People are glad she is gone.

    Unfortunately, she was the subject of a long game that began in 2019. There was a dispute last year and she retained a lawyer to protect herself. Management engaged in a campaign of maltreatment to get her to resign. When she emailed the ultimatum (these are my conditions else I will tell you the date of my departure when I return from vacation), she made a tactical error. They had intention of meeting her conditions. Therefore, she was in a sense ending her time there. She had a huge blindspot - she apparently didn't realize they were trying to get her to quit since 2019 and if she issued anything that could be considered a resignation it would be accepted. You must play politics and learn diplomacy in corporate America. Relationships are EVERYTHING. Don't forget, Steve Jobs was removed from his company.

      I’m really torn on this. If she lawyered up she was a company liability right there. I’m really torn. She’s setting ultimatums, she’s begging to be fired right there. I feel really torn on this. As a woman & a minority I want to support her but she seems to have been antagonizing them, a LOT. So had she been, as I thought at first, a good employee, doing her job and suddenly they randomly fired her, that would be one thing but now I see there’s a history behind it. It changes things. She seems to have been on the warpath for quite some time that’s always going to get you fired, no matter what color gender you are. i’ve been in the corporate world for 20 years right out of college and these are always troublemakers and these are the ones who poison the other employees & infect the work environment & other employees and so they are no longer assets but liabilities from the employers perspective, no matter who it is & they never last. Ever. They don’t owe her a job; especially if she’s a troublemaker. Which from what you wrote & things she said, she is.

    She didn’t highlight bias. It’s a well known issue with any model. If we take a data-driven approach (which I usually do), we need to understand that there’s going to be a misrepresentation of certain labels or groups in the sample dataset.
    That’s why with language models there must be rules to follow to make sure, no label drives the predictions. Although, I agree with some of her statements, what she did was trying to boicot Google (which didn’t involve just her and google directors but many fellow researchers).
    Usually in this case, she could have run more experiments and get probably a POC to show evidently bias in the predictions for certain subgroups.

    they let her leave
    why is she unhappy
    if you specifically give other party 2 options to choose from, you're not entitled to feel wronged that they chose the option you didn't actually like

      1.Demanding to know what problems they have with her work is a constructive demand .
      2.She was ready to leave but it is not legal to be abprubtly cut of your own work and research and other employees .This seems like they wanted to make it harder for her to prove what she says and talking to other employees about it.Judging that her own manager didn't know about this is suspicious.

      they just wanted her to wrote "...or I resign" to legitimate firing her. They are cheating. They just want that sentence for their lawyer. It's fake communication. They avoid confirming with her, instead we see they email other employee that she resigned.

    Sounds like she didn't follow Google's expansive and rigorous review process for scientific papers and instead sought to short-circuit the process by publishing it anyway. When Google than did a review ex-post-facto Gebru issued a list of demands for her to continue working at Google. Google refused to meet her demands and accepted her resignation.

    she is doing important work. all our problems are part of designed systems without foresight or ethics involved ie what facebook is today. she is covering their googles asses in their progress forward from making fucked up problems. algorithms are not neutral unbiased systems bc they are designed by biased flawed people. Incorporating diversity and perspectives bring science closer to perfection.

    I respect her right to question AI. We all should. But of the two languages I speak, Spanish, English, they are gentrified languages. Especially Spanish. I don’t know a single Mexican American who thinks the term Latinx is reasonable. They either never heard of it or they have and are not a fan.

    She was labeled a trouble maker. She should have played the political game better. You can’t have it your way all the time, even if you’re apart of the identity groups you are apart of. That paper was the hill she died on. Stupid. Would have done better playing the political game and staying in. This is my opinion and constructive criticism. This is not a command telling her what to do.

    Media are latching onto "AI ethics researcher fired" to suggest Google is doing away with ethics research for the clickbait, but forget they still have a team there. Just from this interview alone sounds like there is a lot more going on here.
